Who is the Voice Of Rock? Vote now!
Classic Rock needs your help in selecting rock’s greatest singers and best-loved voices.
Britain’s best rock magazine is putting together a list of the singers that changed our lives: the belters, the screamers, the warblers, shriekers, and crooners that helped define the music we know and love, be it prog or punk, metal or melodic rock, grunge, garage rock or plain old rawk.
Who are the singers you love? Who are the greatest at delivering live – and who are the most disappointing? Who has the greatest range, the most unique voice – who delivered rock’s greatest vocal performances and what are they?
And if you don’t think you have to be a technically great singer to have a great voice, whose are the voices that speak to you and why?
Leave your comments below – the best may be used in the magazine and the top 5 best comments (as chosen by the magazine team) will receive a Classic Rock goody bag.

[...] Cast your vote for your favourite singer now! [...]
It has to be Ronnie James Dio – his voice is still as good as it was 50 years ago with the Vegas Kings and he is still the best singer Rainbow and Sabbath ever had,
It has gotta be Bruce Dickinson.
Simple as that.
Other faves of mine are axl rose, james hetfield and sebastian bach, but Bruce has got it goin on!!
Paul Stanley.
James Hetfield! No-one can even come close to having a voice THAT good
And the way he interacts with the group during live gigs is second to none
In terms of pure vocal ability, I think it has to be a toss up between Myles Kennedy and Sebastian Bach.
I think Scott Weiland is quite poor and is even worse live. Ozzy isn’t the greates vocally but the whole package is/was the nuts!!!!!!!!!!!!
For me, it has to be Robert Plant for a vocal style that still renonates in today’s singers. His influence on rock is undeniably huge. A close second would be Bruce Dickinson. He sounds like no-one else, (except perhaps for Geoff Tate on …Mindcrime), and he can still deliver the notes with power and accuracy, even when running round the stage like a mentalist!
I’d like to pick a seventies singer – but I think it has to be James Hetfield. The raw southern style of his voice opitomises rock.
The best singer on business is alice cooper. Why?, Cause after 40 years he is still singing the classic songs in the original keys, his music is diverse and eclectic and his voice can fit any hole, his drama and psicosis in songs like “Ballad Of Dwight Frey”, “Alma Mater” or the recent “SIX Hours”. He deserves to be the ar the top 5.
Ian Gillan – He is the archetypal classic rock frontman with a voice and attitude to match. Peerless as a studio or live performer and unmatched in over 40 years as far as I’m concerned.
This is so hard to do.
Top 3 for me.
1. Bruce Dickinson
2. Dio
3. Rob Halford
The One and only Phil Mogg
No one sings like this man, he has no imitators, just check out anyone doing UFO cover versions they dont get close.
He can rock (lights out) he is soulfull with integrity (try me) he can pop it up (love lost love) and he writes deep meaningfull lyrics (profession of violence, Diesel in the dust)
He was’nt trying to be like Robert Plant either like everybody of his era.
Record sales aside there is only one winner
Who are the singers you love? Freddie Mercury (Queen) Bon Scott (AC/DC)
Who are the greatest at delivering live – Biff Byford (Saxon) David Coverdale (Whitesnake) Ian Gillan (Deep Purple) Phil Conalane (Million Dollar Reload)
Who are the most disappointing? Les Holroyd (Barclay James Harvest) & Meatloaf
Who has the greatest range, the most unique voice – Steve Perry (Journey)
Who delivered rock’s greatest vocal performances and what are they? Phil Collins (Genesis) Live in Rome & Ian Gillan (Deep Purple) Nobody’s Perfect Live
Without a doubt it has to be Paul Rodgers.Unrivaled blues singer and a great bloke to boot!!!
Bon Scott encapsulates everything I like best in a heavy rock singer (at least he did!).
Paul Stanley of Kiss (whatever you think of Kiss) can certainly belt them out live.
Phil Mogg of UFO and Danny Bowes of Thunder are also criminally underrated in my honest opinion.. for what its worth!
David Coverdale.no doubt about it.Best Singer.just listen Burn,Mistreated,or Soldier of Fortune!
Paul Rodgers – his voice has soul, blues and rock in it all at once. Truly THE voice of classic rock.
2. David Coverdale
3. Robert “Squeeze My Lemon” Plant
That would be my top 3 rock vocalists.
Layne Staley – Alice In Chains, Mad Season, Class of 89
He sounds so amazing on every peace he ever did, acoustic pieces on Jar of Flies blew my mind.
He could show so much emotion in his voice. In my opinion, there is no better singer.
R.I.P
Mark Lanegan.
Axl Rose
Layne Stayley
Johnny Rotten
Kurt Cobain
Eddie Vedder
Phil lynnot
1-Bon Scott
2-David Gilmour

6 paul stanley (kiss)
7 brian johnstone (acdc)
8 joe elliot (def leppard)
9 joe lynn turner (rainbow)
10 jello biafra (dead kennedys)
There are many great vocalists, but Robert Plant is the one. A multitude of classic Zepp and solo moments.
greatest voice…..Freddy Mercury
others would be….
Robert Plant
Bon Scott
Bruce Dickinson
Lemmy
And my FAVOURITE SINGER OF ALL………
Janis Joplin
definately W. Axl Rose
Jim Morrison
Dio & Dan McCafferty.
Mr coverdale.
Has to be Jim Morrison. He wasn’t called a shaman
for nothing.
Honourable mentions would be Ronnie James Dio,
Chris Cornell, Eddie Vedder and James Hetfield.
A good way to see who is the best is the amount of sweat they produce while performing which gives us a tie between
1. Phil Lynott – keeps the whiskey in the jar rasp going while drenching his bass in sweat (which is pretty easy since his bass is like 6 inches from his chin)
2. Rob Halford – ‘Sinner’ and ‘Painkiller’ back-to-back whilst wearing leather from head to foot, only the metal god himself can pull it off (and sweat it off for that matter)
oh ou-oh ou-oh yeah!!!

Ian Gillan – The guy could easily have made it as a jazz singer. When a Blind Man Cries, anyone? Child in Time, everyone! Speed King, For Your Dreams, Silver Tongue… One could go on.
Phil Mogg – Leeh said it all. Melody, melody, and more melody. Just Another Suicide, Death in the Family, Only You Can Rock Me… Brilliant.
RJ Dio – He sings live actually BETTER than in the studio, which is unheard of!
David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes – Replaced Gillan successfully. No arguments.
And, er, Gary Moore – His voice is fantastic, almost like a cross between Lynott and Mogg. No, I’m not aking the micky. Moore is as good on the vox as on the axe. And that’s saying a lot.
Ian Hunter – Character!
Axl Rose!
By far.
Followed by Sebastian Bach, Paul Stanley, Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford and Biff Byford.
1. Robert Plant
2. Dan McCaffery
3. Ron Stewart
4. Bon Scott
5. Pat travers
6. Steve Perry
8. Ian Gillan
9. Paul Rogers
10. My Da !!
Danny Bowes Thunder – Nuff said
[...] homage to Classic Rock’s search to find the rock world’s favourite vocalist, the Metal Hammer team have picked their top ten vocalists! Check it out in [...]
1.David Coverdale and Ian Gillan
2.Paul Rodgers
3.Steve Perry
4.Ronnie James Dio
5.Lou Gramm
6.Brian Connolly
And come on people James Hetfield No no no.
OF COURSE MR. STEVE PERRY !!!!!
Where are the votes for The Demon of Screamin’ Steven Tyler. In the studio, onstage, leaving messages on the phone, the man has the best voice of any rocker alive.
As for all-time, it has to be Freddie Mercury. He was the definition of legend.
Honorable mentions to Paul Rodgers, Dio, and Robin Zander.
Gotta be Ronnie James Dio the greatest voice in rock. Better and better every year. Amazing live singer and frontman from when I saw him in 76 right up to now.
Bruce Dickinson 2nd
Myles Kennedy of Alter Bridge is superb too so comes in 3rd
Rob Halford 4th
My all time favorite is none other than DAVID COVERDALE.
Without a doubt Mr D Coverdale.
Danny Bowes of Thunder (rock, blues, ballads) he can sing them all SO UNDER RATED up there also is Steve Perry
Danny Bowes of Thunder-Fantastic singer. Seen them live many times, never heard him miss a note!
Danny Bowes of Thunder. Fantastic singer. Seen them live many times, never heard him miss a note!
There’s a reason why Robin Zander earned the nickname of Man of a Thousand Voices – he can go from sugary-sweet to serial killer effortlessly.
You can’t forget Phil Lynott either. Firstly, he’s the definition of badass, and secondly, no one could belt a song with as much fist-shaking, snarling conviction as he did.
Freddie Mercury. no question.
he recorded songs in pretty much every genre within the rock and roll world, in addition to standing toe to toe with the world’s most famous soprano in the opera world – AND pulling it off which so far we have not seen anyone come close to.
what’s more impressive is that he improved vocal abilities the older he got, depsite dying from Aids. The Show must go on must be THE best vocal performance captured on record by any singer, and this from a man dying, so weak that he had troubles standing up while doing it.
RIP Freddie. there can be only one
No doubt about it DAVID COVERDALE
DAVID COVERDALE
W. Axl Rose!!
Still sounds incredible after all these years in the Chinese Democracy album…
Rock on!! \m/
Well for me it has to be Ronnie James Dio and the fantastic Danny Vaughn…
My top 5;
1. Joacim Cans (Hammerfall)
2. Ronnie James Dio
3. Marco Hietala (Nightwish)
4. Bruce Dickinson
5. Tony Kakko
For me there are three
For on stage showmanship and singin ability-Freddie Mercury
For vocal quality-Ronnie James Dio
And for lyrics -Bonn Scott
DAVID COVERDALE
always makes me feel better during any difficult time.
Personally I want him to sing BLUES more.
Has to be Freddie Mercury
Freddie Mercury without a doubt, pure genius, nobody could touch Fred god bless him. Not only the voice but also as a performer, he was in a league of his own and boy could he write a tune. As a complete package he was unparalled and we will never see his like again.
as women aint getting much of a mention i vote for stevie lange, the singer from chris tomphsons band night.(she’s mutt langes ex)
Paul Rogers
i’m gonna say james hetfield because he still has the same screming voice he had all those years.
1. David Coverdale
2. Axl Rose
Everybody seems to be overlooking an option i can’t help help but put over all others when it comes to rock.
Mark Knopffler he is god at singing and his voice is so beautiful on the brothers in arms track it makes you want to cry. He can change your mood in a single song. You can live out whole lifetimes of emotion by listening to one Dire Straits album.
Deffinately my number one choice.
For me the best top 10 “pure Heavy Rock” singers are:
1. Ian Gillan
2. Ronnie James Dio
3. Robert Plant
4. David Coverdale
5. David Byron
6. Ozzy Osbourne
7. Phil Mogg
8. Dan McFarrety
9. Paul Rodgers
10. Joe Lynn Turner
In no order:
Robert Plant – His voice had amazing “tonality”/”tone”, especially during the early Zep years
Freddie Mercury – always great live
Jack Bruce – intense blues singing in Cream
Rob Halford – Need I say more?
Mick Jagger – Rock ‘n’ roll swagger!
James Hetfield – rough and dirty
Roger Daltrey – Scream king
Bruce Dickinson – 666!!
Phil Lynott
Paul Stanley.
Robert Plant
Ronnie James Dio
Brian Johnson
Bon Scott
Well, since he’s been called The Voice Of Rock since around 1991 and he’s still out there blowing other voice of rock wannabes and veteran singers off the stage, it has to be……..GLENN HUGHES !!!
Chip
It was, it is and it always will be Glenn Hughes!
Freddie, Dio, Gillan, Rose, Scott, Rogers, Plant, Dickinson, Halford, Bach, Lynott, Bowes.
I’m also gonna throw David Lee Roth into the mix. Admittedly not the greatest technical singer, but when he opens his mouth you can hear every bar he’s played in, every beer he’s drunk, every joint he’s smoked and every girl he’s f**ked. Legendary.
P.S. To CrimsonAnna who suggested Marco Heitala, remember that Nightwish is his second band. If you wanna hear real Heitala (and some bloody good metal), dig out a Tarot album. You won’t be dissappointed.
PAUL STANLEY ROBIN ZANDER YES BUT RD OF THE WHO IS THE MAN N MJ OF THE STONES END OF STORY.
David Coverdale
In order id have to say the three best singers of all time are;
1. Rob Halford
2.Ronnie James Dio
3.Ozzy
These thre singers have been screaming out their songs for more than two of my lifetimes and yet they still manage to enchant and attract millions of fans! No one can say that isnt for a reason! Wether its Rob’s high pitched vocals or Dio’s epic swinging melodies or Ozzy’s mesmerising voice each of these amazing vocalists have inspired the metal industury for many a year and will do so untill they physically cannot! Horns up to them!
John Corabi,has a awesome voice.
Has to be Ian Gillan.
Philip H. Anselmo has one of the greatest voices (the “gift”) of all time. It produced America’s first metal No.1 album and generated new genres in heavy rock music. He also has a great range.
Biff Byford has to be the choice for best rock voice. The tone, the sound, the range are all superb, a real microphone buster!
Best voices are:
1. Robert Plant
2. Freddie Mercury
3. Ian Gillan
4. Paul Rogers
5. David Byron
6. John Lawton
I don’t like Journey (it’s to poppy) but that Steve Perry is really great! What a soulful voice!
Geddy Lee (Rush) – an unforgettable sound. Hits the notes some others can only dream of.
I can’t decide between a few:
Robert Sweet
Bruce Dickinson
Eddie Vedder
Axl Rose
IAN GILLAN (of Deep Purple) – WITH NO DOUBT!!!
WHY???
He can win several nominations here:
1. THE HIGHEST VOCAL RANGE – It’s now officially confirmed that among the GREAT TRIUMVIRAT: GILLAN/PLANT/MERCURY – Ian Gillan is the man who could easily reach the lowest and the highest notes, and he had the greatest vocal range (3 notes more than Freddie, and 4 notes more than Plant)
2. THE BEST VOCAL PERFORMANCE OF ROCK: CHILD IN TIME, FIGHTING MAN and the scream at the and of STRANGE KIND OF WOMAN (from Made In Japan) should I say anything more?? I think everuthing is told by the song titles itself
3. THE MOST POLIGENRIC SINGER: actually, being a rock singer, IAN GILLAN did an amazing job as a METAL, JAZZ, FOLK, COUNTRY, SOUL, POP and BLUES singer. He even covered Ray Charles.
so, IAN GILLAN IS THE MAN HIMSELF, WHO IS THE REAL AND GREATEST VOICE OF ROCK.
Steve Marriott without question, followed closely by Robert Plant and Glenn Hughes
I would say for rock it has to be Robert Plant, with Paul Rogers a close second, and for metal I would say Ronnie James Dio, with Bruce Dickinson and Rob Halford a close second and third.
Out of the singers who have passed away then its got to be Freddie Mercury, look back to the Freddie Mercury Tribute and all thoses singer who couldn’t sing his songs in the same key, no one can not even paul rogers
I can’t name just one, I’m sorry.
Freddie Mercury
Ronnie James Dio
Paul Stanley
And
Steve Perry
And
Graham Bonnet
And
Paul Rodgers
God, I could go on………
to me there are two frontmen in Rock History : Freddie Mercury & Steven Tyler.
Then : Robert Plant, Ronnie James Dio, Roger Daltrey, Bruce Dickinson, Bon Scott, Rob Halford, Geoff Tate, Axl Rose, Klaus Meine
My top 6 vocalists
1. Steve Perry
2. Bon Scott
3. Freddy Mercury
4. Axl Rose
5. Liam Gallagher
6. Bono

Who else ?
the King….Elvis
Ian Gillan.
No Contest!
Cheap Trick’s Robin Zander is the man of a thousand voices! And coming in at number two – Metallica’s James Hetfield – he’s the voice of an entire metal generation!
Definitely David Coverdale. The man was born to sing, a raw talent plucked from obscurity when he was barely in his twenties. There’s no denying the sheer power of his voice and he can sing rock, blues, soul…. no one has a voice like him! He’s been belting it out for the past 35+ years and still riding high. The man is a consummate professional who has honed his craft to perfection, while still keeping the fun, excitement and “naughtiness” of rock n roll!
well – depending on how you define “rock” – it has to be David Coverdale for me.
fav singers include: Freddy Mercury, Ronnie James Dio, Jeff Martin(tea party), Jeff Keith, Ian Gillan, Bruce Dickinson, Danny Bowes, Phil Mogg, Eric Martin, Richie Kotzen, Myles Kennedy – never really like the “ranking” part of polls anyway
Who are the singers you love? Ian Gillan; Paul Rodgers; Graham Bonnet; RJ Dio; Rob Halford (not in Fight though!); David Coverdale
Who are the greatest at delivering live? Gillan – even now he is over 60, he is a great vocalist & the archetypal frontman.
Who are the most disappointing? Coverdale on the last tour
Who has the greatest range, the most unique voice? Still Gillan closely followed by Bonnet & Halford.
Who delivered rock’s greatest vocal performances and what are they? Has to be Child in Time – no-one has or probably ever will come close.
And if you don’t think you have to be a technically great singer to have a great voice, whose are the voices that speak to you and why? Rory Gallagher could never be classed as great vocalist but, by God, he could put emotion & meaning to back up his superb playing
jello biafra of dead kennedys! and bon scott of course!
Jorn Lande most be the best…
The Best Singer is Joe Elliott without a doubt!
Jan Gillan without any doubts
Glenn Hughes – the one and only
Axl Rose by far!
paul rodgers
Bon Scott of AC/DC
Steven Tyler of Aerosmith
Axel Rose of Guns n Roses
and Walt Lafty of Silvertide
i think my first vote goes to Axl Rose, he has the most powerful voice and the most range in my opinion, awesome frontman with an unique voice and seein him live is a great feeling, when he’s on he’s the greatest of the greatest
than there are others of course too

Freddie Mercury
Robert Plant
Ian Gillian
Ozzy
Roger Daltrey
Sebastian Bach
Mick Jagger
Bon Scott
Eddie Vedder
Layne Staley
Zack De La Rocha
Dio
Bruce Dickinson
Phil Lynott
Rob Halford
Corey Taylor
Jim Morrison – awesome voice, awesome character, awesome stage presence
Ronnie Van Zant
Grace Slick
David Lee Roth
Dave Mustaine
Brian Johnson
Billy Idol
John Lennon
Joni Mitchell
Ian Gillan must be the best heavy metal singer in the seventies century, it’s only to hear the huge Child In Time, I love it!
Axl Rose – no question about it
Freddie Mercury
Axl Rose
Bob Catley
in that order.
Glenn Hughes & Trevor Rabin
best two both live and studio
Klaus Meine
Phil Mogg
W. Axl Rose
A young David Coverdale is the best! Up until Slide it in, from then on it went downhill.
Ian Gillan was, and continues to be, *the* voice of ‘classic rock’.
David coverdale is the most awesome singer, & always will be the # 1:)
Glenn Hughes!
THE VOICE OF ROCK: GLENN HUGHES
Bon Scott’s voice rocked like hell.
Glenn Hughes
Glenn Hughes IS the Voice of Rock – throughout his prolific career – he has always amazed me – whether its flat out rock, soul, funk, even his short stint of some blues (which I loved). What a class act!
Paul Rodgers
Glenn Hughes
It’s officially in the the credits of KLF’s ‘America: What Time Is Love’ single release: Glenn Hughes – The Voice Of Rock

It has to be Lemmy. No one has that voice. If not him then Dio
glenn hughes!!!!!!!!
glenn hughes
I find it easy to understand female vocalists getting overlooked in this survey; when you consider the great classic rock singers you immediately think of men – Robert Plant, David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes and Bruce Dickinson are just a few that spring to mind. And personally, I’ve never been that fussed about female vocalists anyway.
Stevie Nicks is the one exception – her beautiful and haunting voice is not only one of the most unique and endearing in rock music but also resonates with me in a way that no other can. Her live performances never fail to hold me transfixed – the hypnotic passion and feeling with which she sings Fleetwood Mac classics such as Landslide and Silver Springs is irresistible. Whilst Stevie is certainly an aquired taste, for me her voice is perhaps the most enchanting of all.
There are many so-called ‘greats’ with many different qualities, but Bruce Dickinson has it all… an amazing voice capable one minute of shattering an Everest greenhouse and the next dripping more emotion and feeling than a suicidal samaritan’s caller. Allied to this are his incredible showmanship, great songwriting skills (the man wrote ‘Powerslave’ for cryin’ out loud) and a voice which sounds like absolutely unique. Surely no-one else has been so CONSISTENTLY good for so damn long. The voice of rock? Nobody comes close…
Mr. Glenn Hughes is THE voice of Rock!!!
My absolute favorite is David Coverdale!
Glenn Hughes. No need for any explanation. Just listen.
David Coverdale is my all time favorite!
GLENN HUGLES THAT GOES WITHOUT SAYING!!!!
GLENN HUGHES THE VOICE OF ROCK,FUNK,SOUL AND EVERYTHING
Glenn Hughes, a vocal range in full voice that is unmatched over 5 decades, His talent is undiminished, and his live shows are simply spectacular and inspiring. From the lists above I agree there are many truly great singers.. But only Hughes ticks all the ‘voice of rock’ boxes, the name was coined by he KLF after he provided the astonishing vocals for America: What Time Is Love
freddie mercury
Glenn Hughes without a doubt! No one can compare to Glenn. No one has ever come close or ever will!!!
Jon Anderson – a unique voice, passion and commitment and melodic gift very few rock singers can match, if any. Check out Going For The One, Is It Love?, Song Of Seven, No Way We Can Lose and The Ladder…
Has to be my favourite singer of all time, Phil Lynott, he was awesome in every field
Manticore, best woman singer – actually, best singer man or woman – has gotta be Ann Wilson of Heart. No contest.
Glenn Hughes!
It has to be GLENN HUGHES… ALways has been. There are many other good singers many mentioned here, But Glenn has to be THE VOICE OF ROCK> and will be for many more years.
Ronnie Van Zandt
Just for the soul and feeling in it – you knew he meant every word, especially on stuff like Simple Man and That Smell.
David Coverdale
David Coverdale
I have to do, two lists, one made of “no humans”, very simple for me, and other of “humans”, a little bit more difficult, here is:
NO HUMANS
1.-Freddie Mercury (Queen)
HUMANS
1.-Glenn Hugues ( Trapeze, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Gary Moore, Phenomena, etc.)
2.-Rob Halford ( Judas Priest, Fight )
3.-Ronnie James Dio ( Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio, Heaven & Hell )
4.-Klaus Meine ( Scorpions, Scorpions, Scorpions…)
5.-David Coverdale ( Deep Purple, Whitesnake )
It’s quite hard to choose – in no particular order – Paul Stanley, Klaus Meine, David Coverdale, Paul Rodgers, Ronnie James Dio, Dee Snyder, Bon Scott, Alice Cooper, Phil Mogg, Sammy Hagar, Claus Lessmann (Bonfire), Tom Keifer (Cinderella), Steve Tyler.
Paul Rogers
1. Glenn Hughes

4. John Sloman
5. Dan McCafferty
6. John Deverill
7. Phil Mogg
8. Phil Lewis

The greatest voice of rock? Without any doubt this is DAVID COVERDALE.
Always has been and always will be, especially when he sings the blues!
The voice of David Coverdale..Singing the songs that somehow always related to him ,mine and most everyones life.Loves sweet messenager he comes with the blues untones of loves gone wrong , loves gone right and ,the questions that love ask..He is like a thread of music in my life,His voice in music that flows to the many emotions of my life….His voice has the power to soothe my injured heart or call forth desires to live in love again…His voice and music is the thread that weaves in and around the fibers of my life…. .
My top 5 singers of ROCK is: David Coverdale; Ronnie James Dio; Jim Morrison; Janis Joplin; Paul Rodgers…….Pick any of them and your doing good!
Glenn Hughes
Most singers are one dimensional, either rock or metal, Glenn has a multi-dimensional gift in that he can sing Rock, Pop, Blues, Funk/Soul, R&B, Opera, Metal etc…his back catalog of music is a testament to this…
He is a Renaissance man in the world of singers who can only sing in one style.

becoming friends with him in the mid 80’s in LA.
The man with the angelic voice is also a wonderful human being.

3. Ray Gillen
4. Daniel McMaster
5. Bon Scott
6. Eric Martin
There’s a lot of worthy candidates but I’d have to say Glenn Hughes.
Glenn Hughes, absolutely #1. He puts all his heart and soul into his singing. If you haven’t listened to him lately, I would suggest his latest release “First Underground Nuclear Kitchen”. The title says it all, he’s cooked up a feast for your senses!
6. Joe Lynn Turner
7. Geoff Tate
8. Sebastian Bach
9. Rob Halford
10. Kip Winger

GLENN HUGHES!!!
Glenn Hughes. Voice of rock!
Lots of great voices out there, but there’s nobody out there that can top ‘ Glenn Hughes ‘ he is the voice of rock, the voice of funk, the voice of the blues and the voice of whatever he feels like singing.. have a listen folks and i’m sure u will agree.
It’s GLENN HUGHES. Period.
Glenn Hughes
For sheer diversity and beauty of voice than it has to be Glenn Hughes.
Rock, Metal, Funk, Soul, Balladry and Pop no one else does it so well and with such an individually recognizable style. Accept for the blues genre where David Coverdale and Paul Rodgers are too far ahead.
For certainly most underrated and possibly most beautiful voice ever then James Dewar. Over Robin Trower’s evocative and complicated guitar melodies there rose only one man to the task. Jimmy was just awesome. A beautiful, beautiful voice!
Ronnie James Dio is a terrific singer. First class no question. Add to the mix the talented and likeable musician Sammy Hagar and the British earth that is Phil Moog and you have the crème de la crème! or the crème da la menthe as Dell boy would say!
Glenn Hughes #1
Chris Cornell #2
Robert Plant #3
There are many great singers but only
one person can truly be called
“The Voice Of Rock” and that is the
one and only Glenn Hughes.
Glenn Hughes
Glenn Hughes is the voice of rock even if molt other singers had thier great moment but albums + real live actuation make obviously Glenn as it.
1. Bon Scott, for the whiskey-soaked shrieks and raw attitude
2. Roger Daltrey, for the enormous volume and clarity
3. James Hetfield, for the pure evil and primal growls

5. Rob Halford, for the EPIC AWESOMENESS
Steve Perry
Robert Plant
Rob Halford

Stevie Nicks
Klaus Meine
Ian Gillan is without a doubt the best rock singer ever.
He is amazing both live and on record.
Child in time, speed king, strange kind of woman(from made in japan)and list go on.
He is still amazing, still rockin’. let’s hope he keeps on singing for a long time.
Jeff scott soto

In my opinion there is only one man that fits the bill Mr Glenn Hughes
1) Mr. GLENN HUGHES
2) IAN GILLAN
3) PAUL RODGERS
4) DAVID COVERDALE
5) RONNIE JAMES DIO
David Coverdale-can sing everything!Rock, ballads, blues, soul, and just listen to him without any accompaniment on stage-(a real test for any singer)- what a voice and presence.
All his albums show a range of different vocal styles and quality. From a whisper to a scream as they say.
Glenn Hughes The best Singer on the Planet
For it is Glenn Hughes
Gillan was great, so was Dio, Halford and Coverdale….in the past… now they aren’t anymore.
There is only ONE voice NOW and that is GLENN HUGHES! Good in 1970 and even better is 2009!
its gotta be
Glenn Hughes
Trapeze
Deep Purple
plus all his solo work
1- GLENN HUGHES

The voice of rock – Glenn Hughes
The Voice of Rock
His voice stays good and his music is still growing.
glenn hughes
fantastic and great singer this is m.glenn hughes
It has to be Glenn Hughes. The whitest funky soul rocker alive. The guy can basically sing anything. His contribution to modern music history has been amazing. He is one of the founders of the funkrock genre (Trapeze, late sixties), co-created to of the best rock albums of the seventies with Deep Purple (Burn and Stormbringer) and is probably Jamiroquai’s musical stepfather (listen to his 1977 solo effort Play Me Out). He did a magnificent job with Black Sabbath (Seventh Star) and just as easy stepped into the club scene joining forces with the KLF (What Time is Love). On his latest solo albums he sounds comfortbale in his own-found genre. Glenn is the man.
jonathan davis and kurt cobain
their loud and cool.
KoRn + nirvana rules (respect to all the others though but these are the forgotten but fantastic)
1 Glenn Hughes
2 Ian Gillan
3 Robert Plant
4 Sammy Hagar
5 David Coverdale
6 Ronnie James Dio
7 Paul Rogers
8 Joe Lynn Turner
9 Roger Daltrey
10 Jon Anderson
Whithout a doubt Mr. GLENN HUGHES!! Funk, rock, blues… everything. His voice is the voice of rock, the voice of music. If you know him, you can feel the music in every note, every single song, every riff. If you don’t know him yet, just choose one song and let the magic start.
Good luck !!!
For everyone who has listened to Glenn Hughes at his best, there is no doubt. I believe Glenn is 56-57 years now and he still is performing like hell. The power and the range of his vocals are outstanding. And his techniques are marvellous. And Glenn is able to deliver high quality in most music genres. There’s noone like the voice of rock!!! I agree with Jokerman though, Paul Rodgers is among the best.
For me Glenn Hughes is something else that can’t be compared to any others. When you see him live he just blows you away with his talent, power and voice control, hes had my spine tingling on many occasion!! He is so much more than just the voice of rock – he can throw his voice at anythign and sing in anystyle and make it work! There are many great vocalists out there but to me Glenn really is supreme and stands out there on his own getting better and better over time – this man will not fade!!!!!
Glenn Hughes…#1
simon le bon
Glenn Hughes, there is no one can touch this guy when it comes to a live vocal performance!
1 )Glenn Hughes
2) Jeff Buckley
3) Paul Rodgers
4) Seal
Freddy Mercury
Dio
Glenn Hughes!!!!!!!!!
Ian Gillan
I think the best is Glenn Hughes. He is one of the few singers who has improved during his career. And the CD’s he has released since 2000 are incredible. I doubt that you can say the same about Robert Plant or Ian Gillan. That’s why I would choose him. He keeps his stunning voice, but know he uses it much more wisely, and he his music is a wonderful melting pot of all the influences he’s had all along his career.
1. G L E N N H U G H E S <3 the best
2. Andrew Strong
Glenn Hughes is the ONLY Voice Of Rock!
#1. would be GLENN HUGHES without a doubt.
Can’t believe more people didn’t mention the great Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy/Grand Slam. R.I.P.
And am shocked to not see Dennis DeYoung from STYX anywhere!
for me it has to be mr. bob catley of magnum , no one has more soul and passion than bob , to see him and hear him live with magnum is the best .
others ,
mr.mogg
mr.gillan
mr.dickinson
the list goes on……..
David Coverdale, in my opinion he’s the best in every aspect, great soulful voice, always delivers with incredible passion
The Voice of Rock is Glenn Hughes, than Ian Gillan!
Glenn Hughes. Still out there doin’ it, year in year out, ageing beautifully like a fine wine. I’ve seen them all live, Mercury, Plant et al, and they all duck notes o the night, but not Glenn, if anything he pushes the boundaries. The greatest. simple as.
GLENN HUGHES IS the voice of Rock!!!
Top 5
Rob Halford
Paul Rogers
Ronnie Van Zant
Bon Scott
Freddie Mercury
GLENN HUGHES!!
Jorn Lande
glenn hughes is the voice of rock… after comes ronnie james dio
Glenn’s voice is incredible…his bass funky and cool..
Funk with a capital “‘F”..
1) Axl Rose
2) Rob Halford
3) Dio
4) Sebastian Bach
5) Blackie Lawless
#1. Glenn Hughes – “Return of Crystal Karma” (solo) and Black Sabbath’s “Seventh Star” are the greatest ever!
#2 – Ian Gillan – Deep Purple’s “Machine Head” and “Perfect Strangers” are IMHO his best and make him a close second.
#3 – Joe Lynn Turner – Rainbow’s “Difficult To Cure” is tremendous.
#4 – Bruce Dickenson – vocals on Iron Maiden’s “Powerslave” are massive.
…definitely: Mr. Glenn Hughes!!!!!
His voice is the best from all over the world…most expressiv…he sings so gently, that I could cry my eyes out and in the next moment it’s turning to a incredible powerful voice that I get a gooseflesh !!!
No man alive can singing like him..no doubt whatever!!!
glenn hughes la voz del rock
Glenn Hughes. Hands down. Not only has “The Voice of Rock” been his nickname for about 3 decades, but he’s still putting out excellent music. My favorite is the Hughes Turner Project stuff, but I also like his recent stuff with Tony Iommi. His resume is stellar with Trapeze, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, collaborations and solo stuff.
With deepest respect to all of the great rock voices in the world- and there are many- there is one that screams, sighs and scintillatingly soars above and beyond All: Glenn Hughes. We call him Sensei Hughes, sensei being the japanese word for “Master”.
Hi all its a tough one its got to be a toss up between glenn hughes russell allen jorn lande and richie kotzen for me!!! but hey what do i know??.
Axl Rose by far, has the most range, most powerful unique awesome voice and its can be so beautiful, the greatest frontman ever, awesome singer, when he is on he is the greatest
proof: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3Dva-fWXf8
but there are of course many other great singers like:
Jim Morrison
Robert Plant
James Hetfield
Steven Tyler
Ozzy
David Lee Roth
Freddie Mercury
Bon Scott
Mike Patton
Corey Taylor
Roger Daltrey
Johnny Cash
Layne Staley
Mick Jagger
John Lennon
Joey Ramone
Iggy Pop
John Fogerty
Paul Rodgers
Eddie Vedder
Bowie
Bono
Don Henley
Zack De La Rocha
Elvis Presley
Glenn Hughes and Peter Hammill.
Because they are the best!
Glenn Hughes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s been great to hear Axl’s voice again on record – and I’d love him to win it. But, for me the best voice has to be the rasp of Eddie Vedder!
If we are talking about who is NOW The Voice Of Rock, I would say three voices of Rock: Glenn Hughes, Ronnie James Dio and Paul Rodgers.
And the “all time voice of Rock” for me is Robert Plant with no doubt.
My favorite singers include Mick Jagger, Steven Tyler, Ted Nugent (even though he didn’t sing on some of his original recordings – I have heard him live many times), Robert Plant, Brian Johnson, Sammy Hagar.
Some of the biggest disappointments were David Lee Roth and Vince Neil…when I hear these guys live, they really struggle.
Glenn Hughes, the only one !!!!!
glenn hughes is the the voice of rock
Glenn Hughes is the “Voice of Rock”
Freddie Mercury , Ian Gillan, Bruce Dickinson, Glenn Hughes, R.J. Dio, P. Mogg.
Glenn Hughes has kept and maybe even improved his powerful voice over the years which is an essential credential to be voted V.O.R.
Dio is a close 2nd. Underrated Danny Bowes and Tony Martin 3rd/4th another great singer was the late Ray Gillen. Ian Gillan and David Coverdales voices has now lost their old time peaks.
Without question the all time and currently best and mindblowingly soulfull and powerful and emotive Voice of Rock is the unequaled, unique, innovative Funk Master himself:
Glenn Hughes
Glenn Hughes
lots of great people along the way, but now or then…Glenn Hughes: Soul, power, range. Emotion on legs.
Glenn Hughes, best voice of all time. Well………… tied with Freddie Mercury
GLENN HUGHES
Glenn Hughes
GLENN HUGHES
Glenn Hughes has it all…
David Coverdale!!
For 35 years DavidCoverdale has been the best voice in rock or any other type of music
GLENN HUGHES is without a doubt the VOICE OF ROCK!!!
How come Noddy Holder NEVER gets in on these polls?
Noddy Holder & Slade were the best live stage act in the 70’s even OZZY says so on the BBC Docu “It’s Slade”
Noddy was the best frontman of ANY band and had the crowd eating out of the palm of his hand within minutes of arriving on stage, remember Reading 1980.
There are and have been many greats, but Glenn Hughes has demonstrated phenomenal vocal dexterity for nigh on 40 years now. He can still do it all – howl, scream, bluesy, soulful, he rocks, he funks, he swoops, he soars. Taking everything into consideration (how they all were at their best mixed in with how long they’ve been almost at their best), Glenn has it by a good margin for me. And he can sing that well at the same time as playing the bass like a motherf@k£r…
There is only one The Voice Of ROCK and that is Glenn Hughes!
1 Robert Plant
2 Glenn Hughes
3 Ian Gillan
4 David Coverdale
5 Steve Perry
Rob Carubia from Doghouse. He’s half Sicilian you know…
1) Robert Plant
2)Freedy Mercury
3) Bruce Dickinson
4)Ozzy
5) Janis Joplin
Glenn Hughes is without a doubt THE VOICE OF ROCK !!! Glenn is THE VOICE….PERIOD !!!
If you remember Glenn Hughes as “that guy who did those cool screams in Burn” 30 years ago, or a guy who was in Sabbath for a few minutes or even that guy who did that cool stuff in Hughes/Thrall… you are MISSING OUT! GH IS the voice of rock, because he just keeps getting better and better. Frighteningly so! His 2 recent CD’s “Soul Mover” and “Music for the Divine” are quite possibly 2 of the greatest rock CD’s I’ve ever heard. If you haven’t checked out these CD’s, do youself a favor and grab them. you will thank me. believe me. Oh and if you get Soul Mover, try to buy the revised 2 disk version that has a whole disk of awesome covers on it.
The best singer for me is Ronnie James Dio, hands down. Live or in the studio he is peerless. From Rainbow Eyes to Stand Up and Shout awesome.
Special mentions to Robert Plant and Ian Gillan.
For live performances Geoff Tate, Mindcrime x2 last year was amazing.
Most disappointing live has been David Coverdale.
For unique it has to be Ozzy, however Lemmy, King Diamond and Udo Dirkschneider are certainly worth a mention.
GLENN HUGHES, THE ONLY ONE!!!
Glenn Hughes without a doubt!
Ronnie James Dio. Period.
Robin Zander
plus
Alice Cooper
Roger Daltrey
Glenn Hughes is one of the few greats who can still REALLY SING!! Ronnie James Dio & Paul Rodgers are still singing very well, but after having the honour of performing onstage with Glenn in 2008, I have to say that his energy, passion and absolute professionalism blew me away! Glenn is no has been, he’s still very much here and now, and still living it! He’s the real deal!!
My vote’s with Glenn Hughes all the way!
Glenn Hughes
Roger Daltrey.
1. Glenn Hughes
2. Ray Gillan
3. Danny Vaughn
Glenn Huges
No One but no one is better than Glenn Hughes. The Voice of Rock, still out there and still the man,
There can only be one voice and it belongs to Glenn Hughes. This man can FUNK it up,ROCK it up and BLUES it up like NO OTHER.What ever Glenn Hughes sings you not only hear it you FEEEEEEL IT.He brings out the best in every song he performes no matter if it is a simple tune or a balls out rocker. He gives his ALL no matter what the gig calls for.Glenn Hughes is called THE VOICE OF ROCK but he should also be called THE VOICE OF MUSIC.Go out and pick up ANY Glenn Hughes cd and you will understand and agree with me.Glenn’s voice is a BEAUTIFUL INSTRUMENT don’t miss out treat yourself. Glenn Hughes a GREAT VOCALIST and an all around BEAUTIFUL HUMANBEING
Although many qualify, this should go to Glenn Hughes
Why didn’t my vote for
Glenn Hughes
register last night?
He is The Voice of Rock!
Let me add dUg Pinnick to this, just because he definitely deserves to be mentioned…
Glenn Hughes
Most singers are one dimensional, either rock or metal, Glenn has a multi-dimensional gift in that he can sing Pop, Rock, Blues, Funk/Soul, R&B, Opera, Metal etc…his back catalog of music is a testament to this…
He is a Renaissance man in the world of singers who can only sing in one style.
Glenn is without doubt the best, even if he could only sing in one genre he would be the best but being the only singer on the planet who could sing anything at all with conviction and soul there really can only be one winner.
Glenn Hughes! best voice ever since Michael Jackson
Top Ten (No particular order after Number 1)
1. Glenn Hughes. The man could sing the phone book
and make it sound good.
Ian Gillan – The voice for Purple, as Mk. II is Purple in
it’s purest form.
Lou Gramm – Foreigner before all the ballads – just
good rock!
Brad Delp – RIP, brother. What range!
David Coverdale – Before all the hair and all the
screams – that lower register -
wow.
Paul Rodgers – makes singing so soulfully look
absolutely effortless – what a voice.
Paul Stanley – Yes. The guy from KISS. He brings it
every performance.
Danny Bowes – The one guy on this list I wish I could
see live – what a great singer.
Philip Lynott – What soul. The man could deliver.
Truly THE ROCKER.
Bruce Dickinson/Rob Halford/Dio – great metal voices
all. The Air Raid Siren, The Metal God, and the little man with the HUGE voice.
I know, it’s more than ten – it’s just too difficult to pare it down any more.
No question, Glenn Hughes is the voice of Rock.
glenn hughes is the voice of rock!!!
GLENN HUGHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
there seems to be a lot of glenn hughes!has he got an album that needs promoting?,
they ain’t made my list but i cant believe, marc bolan, elvis presley, david bowie or roger waters ain’t at least had a mention
NODDY HOLDER !!!
Just listen to Slade Alive!
The greatest at delivering live? That’s easy. David Coverdale! The man who knows exactly how and when to be slow an’ easy or rough an’ ready. Cause he doesn’t only perform his vocals when on stage. He communicates with the audience, subsequently transmitting the electricity of his powerful – whether loud or more tender – melodies, all of them a velvet touch to one’s ears and soul. Or just the fun of rock. Depends on your mood.
Glenn Hughes
Without a doubt, Glenn Hughes!!!
Voice Of Rock??? Who else??????
GLENN HUGHES
Glenn Hughes, from Trapeze (listen to what is a womans role) to his music today. incredible.
I vote for Glen Hughes
The one and only Bob Dylan is the voice of rock – he gave hope and inspiration to all the wanna be crooners that didn’t have the vocal skills of Frank, Dean and Sammy that they could sing in ther own voice and be successful as long as they sang with emotion and soul.
Dylan made it hep to vocalize in your own manner – purists be damned!
1) Roger Daltrey – is there even a question?
2) Robert Plant – well, Rob’s good too
3) Freddie Mercury – Freddie’s got some pipes too…
4) Sammy Hagar – never misses a note either
Methinks someone has tipped off the Glenn Hughes fanclub lol.
Ian Gillan
Child in Time, Made in Japan.
Studio and live, nobody can compare.
altho there are many, the one that gets my vote is THE ONE & ONLY NODDY HOLDER of SLADE!!!!
THE VOICE OF ROCK OF THE GLENN HUGHES!!!
I would have to say Ronnie James Dio….Closely followed by Bruce Dickinson, Axl Rose & Chris Cornell.
=)
#1 Glenn Hughes,
#2 Robert Plant,
#3 Bon Scott,
#4 Ozzy Osbourne
#5 GEDDY LEE!!! Yes, I said it! RUSH rules! Still going strong over 35 years!!!!
David Coverdale is the best!!! awesome voice he rules
& will rules forever!
Glenn Hughes of course…! The voice of ROCK
Glenn Hughes is the voice that represents several generations and soared through my youth. He is still fabulous today.
only Glenn Hughes!!!!!
hi is not only Voice of rock – He is GOD of Rock Vocals!!
1) Glenn Hughes
2) Dio
Glenn Hughes!
He´s voice is still great!
He can sing different kind of music.
Halford, Dio and Dickinson are great only in metal.
AS A 35+ YEAR FAN OF GLENN HUGHES,I FELL HE IS TRULY”THE VOICE OF ROCK”!! MY VOTE IS FOR GLENN HUGHES, THANK YOU, MYRON STEWART
Ronnie James Dio, is the best singer, he is the spirit of metal and the inventor of the devil horn sign
1. Ronnie James Dio. Singing like a god since the Dead Sea only felt slightly sick.
2. Jimmy Farrar. One of the ugliest and most underrated singers on the planet has been doing the rounds in southern rawk for over 30 years.
3. Rob Halford. The voice of steel on steel, also capable of being remarkably sensitive and diverse.
1. Glenn Hughes
My vote is for Mr. David Coverdale. For his strong, powerful voice and for his amazing presence on scene -electrifing and emotional also-.
Could be Napoleon Murphy Brock or Steve Mariott.
But in the end, I do choose Robert Plant, since he’s so influencial and archetypical.
I was about to say I’m going to put a more modern slant on this, but the guy I’m going to recommend has actually been around with his band for 20 years! For me, it’s got to be Maynard James Keenan. He’s easily the most versatile vocalist in rock/metal, able to do gentle, soft, powerful, aggressive- and all in one song! The only vocalist who can send shivers down my spine- plenty of bands as a whole can do that, but with TooL/APC/Puscifer the vocals alone can do it (just listen to Lateralus and The Pot by TooL, or Passive and Brena by APC). Layne Staley also deserves mentioning, also for the versatility and depth of emotion he was able to get across.
There’s only one Voice of Rock….Glenn Hughes!
ANN WILSON……….By a long shot. AWESOME SINGER.
DAVID COVERDALE.
Only Glenn Hughes can hold the title of “the voice of rock”
They don’t call Glenn Hughes the voice of rock for no reason. If you’ve seen him perform live, you know what I’m talking about. I personally have never seen another artist with such a powerful vocal range. I love all of his work from Purple, Sabbath, up until today with his solo albums. Music for the Divine and FUNK are revolutionary. God bless ya Glenn…CB
Ian Gillan!
Well, until last year I would have said David Coverdale. A great soul, rock and blues singer and a brilliant showman. However, looking at the Youtube vids of the last tour, he seems to have blown it somewhat and mouthing to the words as backing singers pick up the reigns is not the way to deliver a live show.
On that basis it has to go to Paul Rodgers, who still possesses a great voice but remains a mediocre front man.
And my advice to David? Stop the “metal Snake” shows and go back to your roots man, while you still salvage your reputation!
1. Steve Overland
2. Paul Rodgers
3. Danny Bowes
4. Sammy Hagar
Glenn Hughes is the greatest off them all !
Funk it up !!!
There is but one voice of rock… Mr Glenn Hughes. Let’s be fair, the guy can sing rock like nobody else, and handles soul, pop, funk…. as much as Gillan was right about his love of Stevie Wonder, there is soooooooooo much more to this guy.
The only other guy fit for the title is Ronnie James Dio, but even he doesn’t hold up against Glenn.
The best rocksinger is Freddie Mercury. Totally unique voice. Impossible to copy. He did things no one else has even come close at doing.
Noddy Holder
the best ever singer is : Ian Gillan
Glenn Hughes is the acclaimed Voice of Rock
NODDY HOLDER!!
Daylight second.
There is only one Voice of Rock :
Mister Gleeeeeennnn Huuuuuuugheees !

2. Freddie, beautiful singer
3. Ronnie, powerful
Coverdale, no doubt about it!
And John Lawton, Paul Rodgers, Peter Murphy, Jeff Scott Soto.
IAN GILLAN
Glenn Hughes
- Who are the singers you love?
- Freddie Mercury. Awesome performer. His voice had the ability to touch even the hardest and darkest soul.
- Tony Martin. Even though some neglect that period of Sabbath, they should open their eyes and see the wonder of this fantastic singer.
- Who are the greatest at delivering live?
- David Coverdale. Great presence and feel.
- Jorn Lande (Masterplan, Jorn, Ark). Sings like a true champion of the north. He’ll make you rock no matter what.
- Most disappointing?
- There are many, but I can’t specifically point out someone.
- Who has the greatest range, the most unique voice?
- Michael Matijevic (Steelheart). No one reaches the vocal heights he does. He is the most unique singer I’ve ever heard.
- Glenn Hughes. What a vocal range! He’s fantastic live too!
- Russel Allen. He is gifted with an incredible vocal range and varies masterly between the powerful ‘heavy’ sound and the smooth soul-wrenching sound.
- Who delivered rock’s greatest vocal performances and what are they?
- For me I would have to say Glenn Hughes at Garage, Bergen, Norway. That was a life-changing show. He rocked us out of awareness! Even though half a year has passed since the magnificence took place, I can still feel chills down my back.
Definitelly Glenn Hughes
Mr Glenn Hughes
1. Glenn Hughes
2. Paul Rodgers
3. Dennis De Young

Top 3.
1. Paul Rodgers
2. Robert Plant
3. Ann Wilson
Glenn Hughes of Deep Purple
Yes indeed, there´s only one Voice of Rock: Glenn Hughes!!!!!!!!!!!!
Having voted for Gillan, Mogg, Dio, Hughes, et al, I forgot one incredibly underrated vocalist – Chris Youlden! He was the singer with Savoy Brown on their Raw Sienna album, among others. Needle & Spoon, about the ‘H’-lifestyle (but not promoting it) is a rock classic. His voice is the deeper counterpoint to Glenn Hughes – an incredibly black voice from a white singer. He was later replaced by Dave Walker, who was in Fleetwood Mac (and the Sabs for about a month). If Phil Mogg is under-appreciated, Chris Youlden is completely invisible.
Glenn Hughes !
Why, Glenn Hughes, of course!
For sheer variety of vocal styles and range it can only be Glenn Hughes.
Other singers in the running should include Ian Gillan, Ronnie James Dio and Paul Rodgers.
Ian Gillan ……listen to Child in time (studio and live)
Glenn Huges has my vote
Glenn Hughes , without a shadow of a doubt..he’s been called the “Voice Of Rock” since 1994 and rightly so.
Ian Gillan — the moust adaptive and soulful artist ever
Glenn Hughes
There are many great singers out there.. BUT only one has the range and sheer vocal power TODAY !!
Glenn Hughes sits atop Mount Olympus alone.
No other than Glenn Hughes

Glenn Hughes IS the Voice!!
There’s no doubt that Glenn Hughes has the greatest and most powerful rock voice on the planet. The sheer intensity and range of his voice is extraordinary. He knows exactly when to scream, slow it down or just sing with the strength of ten men. What’s more he gives an incredible live performance every single time.
Glenn Hughes
Glenn Hughes!

The rest may rest in peace!!!
Paul Stanley
Freddie Mercury
Angus Young
Jon Bon Jovi
Geddy Lee
Axl Rose
Steven Tyler
Ian Gillan – A voice that could handle the range and demands of a song like “Child In Time,” must go to the top of the “Voice Of Rock” list. It’s hard to believe such a warm and even beautiful voice could also scream like no other.
01. Ian Gillan
02. Ann Wilson
03. Justin Hayward
04. John Wetton
05. Jon Anderson
06. Paul McCartney
07. Jim Morrison
08. Ronnie James Dio
09. John Fogerty
10. Elvis Presley
Ian Gillan. A singer that could handle the range and demands of a song like “Child In Time” and still great, must go to the top of a list like Voice Of Rock.
David Coverdale and his voice rock me the best and have done since the ’70s. He’s got the best depth of range I’ve heard. Absolutly the best
Christ, this is a hard one, and I’m more of a guitar afficionado than vocalist……
Ok its got to be Paul Rodgers hasn’t it? …. but Sir David of Coverdale is tremendous…. Glenn Hughes IS the Voice of Rock….. but Steve Perry is amazing (and actually the wee phillipino guy as well)…. and Steven Screamin’ Demon Tyler is bloody tremendous live…. Dickinson deserves props but Ozzy Osbourne IS the sound of Heavy Metal…. its too tough to choose….. aw sod it! Here goes…. the Voice of Rock is ……… Brian Johnson!!!
Lets face it the DC, the ultimate rock band, would be shit with anyone else fronting them plus he never gets any credit despite being a major component of their sound over the last 29 years! Everyone always banging on about Bon ( good though he was) but Brian really has an incredible rock voice and having met him – is a top bloke too! Mon the Johnson!!!
PAUL RODGERS
BRUCE DICKINSON
BON SCOTT
JAMES HETFIELD
JANIS JOPLIN
truly great
awwww man this is a stich up how can hughes even play a part when he is best known for being second fiddle to,osbourne, dio and gillan?
Glenn is voice of rock!!!!!!!!!
DAVID COVERDALE
No one can exceed him in such a passionate voice and live performance!
Glenn Hughes is a very talented rocker. His singing voice is one of a kind.
I vote for Glenn Hughes, ’cause he’s my **Daddy** (soul-speaking) aka BIG PAPA…. and Glenn is so sexy, sweet and cool! I want to give my darling Glenn a big ole’ HUG and kiss! But Steve Perry, Robert Plant, and Jeff Scott Soto all deserve honorable mentions, as do I an Gillan and David Coverdale. Among females, Bonnie Raitt and Joan Jett truly rock! Thank God for singers! And for the Post Mortem rockers… John Lennon and George Harrison! OH, and Mick Jagger is awesome. But since I have big ole crush on Glenn Hughes, I put in my vote for GLENN HUGHES. Let’s not forget Bono.
David Coverdale has the best set of pipes!
1.King Elvis
2.Paul Rodgers
3.John Kay
4.Mark Farner
5.Chuck Negron
Candice Night (JUST KIDDING!)
Have to go with Glenn Hughes
followed by Dio and Ian Gillian
While I love Dio, he is not as good a voice as he once was and Ian Gillan is nowhere near what he was in his heyday. GLENN HUGHES has to be the best at the present time. Plus, he has been way more versatile than the other guys over his entire career. GLENN HUGHES truly is the voice of rock.
Robert Plant, and Rob Halford come to mind as great singers, but that seems to be back in the day, now their voices are not nearly as strong as they once were. Now I think the best voice in the business belongs to Glenn Hughes, his voice is amazing on just about any style of music. I think Ronnie James Dio still has a great voice as well.
1.Paul Stanley(kiss)
2.Robert Plant(zep)
3.Bruce Dickinson(maiden)
Glenn Hughes, WITHOUT A DOUBT!!!!
Glenn Hughes. Hands down.
NOT Glenn Hughes!
My votes are for Steven Tyler, Axl and Paul Stanley.

No, not Glenn, good as he is, it’s Paul Rodgers who is the best and most influential singer. His voice is as good now as it was when he started 40 years ago.
Mr Glenn Hughes, from Trapeze to Purple and then on to his solo work to his collaboration’s. Never has this man failed to impress me. He has to have one of the most powerful and most moving voices in Rock.
ANN WILSON………the best.
STEVE LEE….Gotthard rock!!!!!!!!
Glenn Hughes is the best “Voice Of Rock”!!!
Ian Gillan – 45 years in the business, still easily wins hands down.

Dio is still number 1 as he continues to deliver in the live arena as well as recordings. Although heavier and more powerful than most vocalists, he has the range to go from the purest note to angriest snarl; ensuring you feel every emotional word along the way.

2. Coverdale (not live)
3. Plant

MICHAEL KISKE
Glenn Hughes without a doubt
Glenn Hughes is the best !!
Glenn Hughes – The Voice of Rock
1984 – Stevie Wonder rated him best technical soul singer in NME, a fortnight after Dio rated him best rock singer. I love Coverdale and Gillan but Coverdale has never had the range. Should also be credited for the way he has kicked drugs and got his life back together. IMHO
glenn hughes – no contest.
Somebody here mentioned Gillan’s vocal range. Apparently Hughes holds the record 5 and a half octaves!!! But who cares it’s the voice that couts, can be soul or rock. BTW he’s brillant for his age but he was only 22 when he joined Purple. He was only a nipper in Trapeze
Glenn Hughes
Glenn Hughes baby!!!!!!!!!
David Coverdales charismatic voice, style, lyrics and presence makes him uniquely the one for this honor..
David Coverdales charismatic voice, style, presence and lyrics make him uniquely the best…

Glenn Hughes best voice
David Coverdale is untouchable in this category, the soul, the power, the range. D.C. is the ultimate.
I have followed Glenn Hughes since the day of Trapeze
He has the most soulful voice and a range to match!!
Although David Coverdale has a soulful voice but not the range. I have follow them both from their beginning and I think Glenn Hughes is The VOICE OF ROCK. He is under rated!!!!!!!!
Donnie (Iommi) Wallace
JOHN LENNON, ROBERT PLANT, PAUL McCARTNEY, ROGER DALTRY

I can never talk about Glenn Hughes without mentioning Ronnie James Dio. It is hard for me to put one above the other. They are both great singers, very nice individuals and can sing like no one else. It is hard to decribe their voices because they are so amazing. Who is he voice of rock? Glenn Hughes and Ronnie James Dio. .
Glenn Hughes, No more has to be said.
Ian Gillan – no doubt.
He not only has the biggest range of voice (from ‘No More Cane On The Brazos’ to ‘Fighting Man’ and ‘Child In Time’) but also the biggest variety of styles he can (convincingly) sing since more than 41 years.
Add to this his ability of songwriting, a stunning quality as frontman and a great approach towards fans and you have to say: without par!
Oh, and I almost forgot: It’s also important WHAT ‘the voice’ has to say, and in terms of lyrics Ian Gillan is probably the most underrated poet of our times.
Coverdale tops the list… but, there are other greats:
1. David Coverdale
2. Ian Gillan
3. Robert Plant
4. Glenn Hughes
5. Lou Gramm
Glenn Hughes is the voice of rock for me. He gets better with age! His voice is unique and so is his music.
I have to mention also other amazing vocalists: Freddie Mercury – a true genius, Ronnie James Dio, Robert Plant, Paul Rodgers, Dan McCafferty, Phil Mogg, John Wetton.
Another year and still no Glenn in Ireland, Why?
My vote is for Mr. David Coverdale. For his strong, soulful voice and for his fabulous scene attitude.

Glenn Hughes
Glenn Hughes rises to the top of an elite long lived group that includes Ian Gillan and Robert Plant.
IAN GILLAN has got the pipes to sing along with one of the loudest & proudest bands of all time.
I am amazed by how many people here voted for Glenn Hughes, which is certainly an excellent choice, as the guy has always been great and can still do it after all these years, but I didn’t realize he was this popular? Oh, ok, I get it– Deep Purple’s on the cover of the issue so there’s a disproportionate volume of their fans responding. That explains the votes for Gillan as well…
Well ok, sure, I’ll go with Hughes as one of the top vocalists.
I’d also say maybe Billy Idol and Glenn Danzig for low-register and Robert Plant and Bon Scott in the high registers. For flexibility, gotta love James Labrie– listen to him do Hetfield on one song, Freddie Mercury and Dio on others…
Also, though I don’t know that anyone is going to call Dave Roth a technically proficient singer, he certainly qualifies as one of the all-time characteristic voices of rock-n-roll.
Glenn Hughes is the voice of rock… no question about it!
1. Gillan
2. Plant
3. Mercury
4. Coverdale
5. Barden
Hi!
Well this is fun. Her are my list:
1) Glenn Hughes as he is “The Voice of Rock”

¡¡¡ THE VOICE OF ROCK IS GLENN HUGHES !!!
Glenn Hughes is not just The Voice of Rock he is The Voice of Music,
David Coverdale’s charismatic voice is the “voice of rock” obviously.
John Lawton or Ian Gillan or DIO or Glenn Hughes—-
4 Legends and 4 Voices of Rock !!!
Glenn is the voice… not only a voice !
So Glenn rules…
David Coverdales voice and presence stays in your mind and heart.Calling you to come listen again and again.
It is off course, Glenn Hughes.
A man from the old school of Rock, who’s still prolific, still has all of his vocal-range intact (unlike many of his contemporaries), and still follows his own muse.
Which makes him, paradoxically, a fresh artist.
Glenn Hughes of course!
Glenn Hughes is the Voice of Rock. No doubt. People seem to be voting on past reputations, but this is about who can still perform at the very highest level. That’s because his singing technique has always been superior to his contemporaries. Let’s be bold with this and not kowtow to the safety zone of Axel, Planty and the usual suspects. This is about longevity and 2009. Glenn Hughes is still the real deal.
Hey, … he just keeps on doin’ it !!!! .. and to such a high standard. He’s PROLIFIC !!! Lang may yir lum reek Glenn.
1)Glenn Hughes all the time..
Ian Gillan
I have heard a lot of wonderful singers bot no one has his power, his control of every single register, his versatility and his big big soul.
2) John Lawton

5) Steve Perry
6) Graham Bonnet
7) Joe Lynn Turner

Glenn Hughes: the greatest singer ever put on god`s green land. After what Glenn has put his body through over the years , he still has a voice of a teenager and a range that no other rock singer is blessed with and long may he continue to produce brilliant music.
David Coverdales music inspires us and gives us feelings of new hope..
David Coverdale
Glenn Hughes
I may only be 21 but I know that GLENN HUGHES is THE VOICE OF ROCK

David Coverdales music assist us in experiencing new exciting depths within his musical gifts
For his charistmatic voice and scene atitude David Coverdale is the voice of rock, absolutely.
To be a great rock singer needs 3 undeniable factors.
1.To be English.
2.To come from the Midlands.
3.To have breathed the air of Bloxwich.
Their are three men who can claim to fit all the criteria-Rob Halford -Robert Plant and Noddy Holder.
All 3 have graced the stages of the world and produced some of the finest vocals known to man but when push come to shove their can only be one true Nod.
Noddy Holder..the greatest voice England has ever produced.
David Coverdales voice and stage presence rocks our very souls
Glenn Hughes, It’s always been his title for god’s sake!
it can be only one
That one is the almighty
GLENN HUGHES
Listen this guy can sing the phone book and make it sound good
THE VOICE OF ROCK
after all these years and listening to many singers.
my vote
is
GLENN HUGHES
without a doubt
Glenn Hughes is simply the best rock voice and one of the greatest musicians in the world. i am bulgarian and like so much Deep Purple and DP familly.
Sorry for bad english.
GLENN HUGHES!!! Best than Us
The voice of Rock who will that be
There is only one that I can see
The blues rocking voice of David Coverdale
Compared to his soulful voice all others pale
Given his experience and vitality, and the fact that he delivers every time, I would have to go for the Voice of rock himself: Mr. Glenn Hughes.
He pushes his voice to the limit and sometimes beyond!
Glenn Hughes of course!!!
It can be no one other than
GLENN HUGHES
Glenn Hughes is the greatest bassplayer/singer since Paul mcCartney
Glenn Hughes is and will always be The Voice of Rock , Joe Lynn Turner is in second place, David Coverdale and Ian GIllan have lost their voices and originality many years ago..
It is so obvious that Glenn Hughes is so in front of any other vocalist on the rock scene. I mean I love Dio and Plant they have superb voices. But for shear range and power there is only one that stands head and shoulders above all others. And that is the living legend that is Glenn Hughes and what makes it even better is that he is such a genuinely nice guy. His fans love him and he loves them right back. There is only one voice of rock and that honour has to go to Glenn Hughes. Just see the man live tell me anyone else who can match that. Please if there is someone else I need to know. But until that time. My vot is Glenn Hughes.
Chris says:
To be a great rock singer needs 3 undeniable factors.
1.To be English.
2.To come from the Midlands.
3.To have breathed the air of Bloxwich.
So Glenn Hughes is the man!!
jimmy barnes is the greatest
jimmy barnes
There is a lot of great singers. But I vote Glenn Hughes.
1. Ian Gillan
2. Ronnie James Dio
3. Glen Hughes
4.Robert Plant
5. David Coverdale
Glenn Hughes number 1 baby
My vote is for Mr. David Coverdale. For his powerful voice and amazing stage presence.
OK – he might not be everybody’s cup of tea, but to my ears it has to be JOHN WAITE – he’s pure Earl Grey!
Wouldn’t you love to see a sing-off with the many talented artists listed in this poll. So many to chose, but there is only one Glenn Hughes! He is the voice of rock!!
David Coverdale. As a young vocalist he is my inspiration…
not continue with the vote, the largest is glenn hughes
Glenn Hughes is the best vocalist of the story
The voice of Rock is undoubtedly Ian Gillan. His timbre is unique, his range is incredible. Just the best for all the times.
Fredy Mercury, Ian Gillan, Ronnie James Dio
Glenn Hughes. The main man. THE SOUL MOVER.
And for the people moaning about mobilising the Glenn Hughes fan club. Err,maybe he’s getting all these votes because he’s that good!!
By the way, he has no album to promote at the mo!
Glenn Hughes, no doubt about it.
there is only one voice of rock and his name is GLENN HUGHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
David Coverdales..The voice of rythmn that floods us in love and light. The voice that rocks us through the darkest night..
Another vote for Glenn Hughes. He has more power, soul and emotion in his voice than anyone around – whether are stars from the “Classic” era of the 70s or young guns from today. He can still hit those high notes every time and to see him live is an experience you just don’t forget and he ain’t stuck in a time warp of Greatest Hits tours like so many other bands either. Forget Gillan’s claptrap about singing like Stevie Wonder, Hughes last 4 albums are better then anything Purple have produced in the last 20 years.
Glenn Hughes THE voice of rock
with his range and power that he has displayed over the past 40 years with some of the biggest bands in the world and the versatility he has shown in his solo work it has to be GLENN HUGHES.
Glenn Hughes. Accept no substitute.
Glenn Hughes – no one comes close – if you’ve ever caught him live – there is no doubt he is the one true Voice of Rock!
David Coverdale..I listen to him everyday…He’s my choice
at first place GLENN HUGHES
second RONNY JAMES DIO
third DAVID COVERDALEN
fouth place IAN GILLAN.
This is my list. I think thah Glenn is absolute the number one. He has a great voice and it`s getting better al the time.
My vote is for David Coverdale. He really is THE voice of rock!
greatest voice – Glenn Hughes
1.glenn hughes 2. ian gillan 3. john lawton(great pipes)
4.davey pattison 5.THE highly underrated rory gallagher
It’s not an easy task to pick only one favourite singer. There is a lot of really good rock vocals, present and now. I can’t think of any singers that have changed my life etc. But some of them has stunned me, and one of them is Glenn Hughes.
David Coverdales rocking blues voice is the one..
Glenn Hughes voice is the best without any doubt !!!!
Glenn Hughes voice is the best for nearly about 40 years !!
Glenn Hughes working with Tony Iommi & in the solo albums like “Addiction”, “Soul Mouver”, “Play Me Out”, “Music For The Divine” and in Deep Purple – “Come Taste The Band”
Definitely Ronnie James Dio. He is the God of the Rock voice, no question about it.
& bringing up the rear is Paul Stanley. Not only is he incredibly sexy, but have you heard the beginning of ‘Heaven’s On Fire’? That’s a vocalgasm right there.
David Coverdales voices voice gives us more, more, more of what we’re looking for…

Glenn Hughes, without a shadow of a doubt.
He’s still doing it, still got the whole range and is out there endlessly touring the world and making albums. No-one from the old boys of rock can still do it nowadays, Gillan was great, as was Coverdale etc. Glenn is the only one with a truly great voice in both range and power.
Having listenedto so many over too mny years favourites are Glenn Hughes, Ian Gillan, Rober Plant, Coverdale (up to 1987) Eric Stewart. However, GH can hit it every bit as good today as he ever has, so he is the man.

NOBODY CAN SING THE HARD ROCK STUFF, AND THE BALLADS ALSO, LIKE THE UNDERRATED DAN MCCAFFERTY.
David Coverdales voice is the one that I am Staying with..He’s the one..
Its okay doing a top singer blah blah blah but , why is it always the same ones?? i mean what about the vocally versatile Matt Barlow from Iced earth or Zak Stevens. Even the great Dan mccafferty wasnt even included. I mean there is no disputing the greatness of Mr Mercury or Mr Plant etc etc but PLEASE there is other titanically great singers out there as well.

ian gillan
Glenn Hughes
Although his voice has changed considerably since the early days of Soundgarden (his days in Audioslave almost killed it completely), it is in my view the best voice out there.
After seeing him sing recently at his Shepherds Bush Empire gig (best gig of my life!) I can confirm that it has regained a lot of it’s power, range and tone.
To quote Black Hole Sun Chris, “no-one sings like you anymore”
Freddie by a mile! Best voice and front man in history.
Layne Staley
Sensational voice…just keeps getting better! He has the best range of all rock, blues, and soul vocalists! Love his music!
Joe Strummer (The Clash)
For Defining punk
Bon Scott (AC/DC)
The Greatest voices of rock
Mick Jagger (The Rolling Stones)
The most extraordinary voice in Metal belongs to the new Queen of Metal…Veronica Freeman from Benedictum whose pipes just have to be heard.

Glenn Hughes
Of couse Ian Gillan. Gillan had a truly great voice. Very underrated. He was every bit as good as, and in many cases better than: Dio, Roger Waters, Robert Plant, Freddie Mercury and Jim Morrison among the all-time great rock singers. He could have sung any kind of music: Broadway, soul, opera, rock, blues, pop, and probably even country. Fantastic. Thats Why He Is #1 Rock Vocalist All Of Time
for me glenn hughes for two reasons, first one, because he can sing whatever song of all of them, but not many can sing all his songs and second because he is the best on live where you have to show how you can do it, and there is, where many singers go down a lot, specially plant, gilliam, coverdale and so on
glenn the best
Steve Perry. End of discussion.
Corey…F-in’…Taylor.
