Waters worked it out for himself
Roger Waters wouldn’t offer any advice to teenagers who hope to make it in the music business – not even himself.
The former Pink Floyd man is currently working on his first new album in 20 years, with a storyline set in Northern Ireland after a young boy tells his grandfather about a nightmare in which children are killed.
Waters tells Billboard: “The grandfather enters into a covenant with the boy that he will take him on a quest to find an answer to his question, ‘Why are we killing the children?’ That’s what the record’s about.”
Asked during the same conversation what he’d say to those aiming to become professional musicians, he replies that he’d tell them nothing. Then, in answer to the question ‘What would you say to your 19-year-old self?’ he answers: “I wouldn’t talk to that little fucker. Standing in a corner, smoking cigarettes, snarling at everybody – he had to go figure it out for himself.”
Waters has just completed a three-year tour with his live version of Floyd album The Wall. His lifelong search for his father ended recently when an old soldier confirmed the time and place of his death during the Second World War.
