Respect! Bay Area Glamsters Vain Announce UK Tour
Vain are coming to Britain in November – and it’s the original line-up.
Talking exclusively to Classic Rock, vocalist Davy Vain has revealed that the San Francisco glamsters will also be playing a lot of songs from their acclaimed 1989 debut album, No Respect.
“The line-up will definitely have Jaime Scott and Danny West (guitar) and Tom Rickard (drums), and we also expect Ashley Mitchell (bass) to be there as well. But he’s having to sort out one or two issues, which hopefully won’t cause a problem.”
This would be the first time that the five have played together in 20 years. And the real coup is in getting Rickard back.
“The rest of us have been together again for a while. But Tom hasn’t been involved for ages, apart from one rehearsal he did 10 years back. What happened was that I flew him out to Germany to play on a project I’ve been producing. We got talking, and as a result he’s back!”
Right now, Vain are still working on the set list. This is to be based around No Respect, plus songs from the 1991 album All Those Strangers and Move On It (’93).
“One song we are definitely doing is No Respect itself. We got a lot of stick in Europe a few years ago for leaving it out, and we won’t be making the same mistake again.
“The problem we have in getting together a set list is that we’ve got such a complicated system for choosing. Each member can select one song that the rest of us have to agree to doing. But every member also has the right to veto one nomination from anyone else. But if you use your veto, then you lose your choice of song! It’s no wonder the process is such a nightmare.”
Given the complexity of the above, it’s a wonder Vain can agree on a setlist at all!
The band intend to film the gigs for future release, and are already working on songs for a new album. It’ll be recorded in Germany (where Davy Vain now lives) and Nashville. But will it be the original band on the new album?
“We’ll be using both Tom and Louie Senor, the guy who’s been with us now for quite a while,” Davy reveals.
See Vain at Dudley JB’s November 24, Newcastle Trillians Rock Bar 25, Grimsby Yardbirds 26, Swansea Vice 28, Sheffield Corporation 29, London Camden Underworld 30, Nottingham Junction December 1.
