Tracks Of The Day: The Weight/Ancestors
Yet more great music from the catacombs of Tee Pee Records. Today, we present the southerness of The Weight and the ambient heaviness of Ancestors. Check out all the latest Tracks Of The Day.
The Weight describe themselves as ‘murderers, thieves, gentlemen of the south’. Now based in New York, this the brainchild of singer Joseph Plunkett, who began as a solo artist, before finding the rhythm section of bassist Will Nolan (his uncle, although only five years older) and drummer J. Ellis. Add in guitarist Fletcher C. Johnson and pedal-steel player Johnny Carpenter (both of whom also contribute vocals), and you have a band to appeal to fans of Tom Petty, Drive-By Truckers and The Jayhawks.
Their last album was Are Men in 2008, and from it you may download the song Closer Than A Friend at teepeerecords.com/sampler

Ancestors come from Los Angeles, and have the sort of gloomy, doomy yet ambient approach that will appeal to fans of Neurosis and Sleep. They feature Justin Maranga (guitar/vocals), Nick Long (bass/vocals), Chico Foley (electronics/keyboards/vocals), Jason Watkins (piano/organ/vocals) and Brandon Piece (drums/gong – we mustn’t forget the gong!).
They started out in 2006, and have so far released two albums: Nepture With Fire in 2008, and last year’s Of Sound Mind. From the former, download for free the epic title track at teepeerecords.com/sampler
See the band in the UK with Night Horse at London’s South Of The Border on April 16 and the White Rabbit in Plymouth the next night. Find out more at www.myspace.com/ancestorsband
