It probably comes as no surprise to learn that we get sent a great deal of music here at CRock HQ. And every now and again something lands on your desk that’s a little bit special.
Case in point – The Steepwater Band. Their disc had been sitting on my desk for ages before I finally listened to it, and then I spent ages wondering why I hadn’t checked it out before.
The Steepwater band, a power trio it transpires, are from Chicago. And if you like your rock rootsy, bluesy with a bit of Beatley sensibility thrown in, then you’ll probably get a kick out of this lot.
First time I heard All The Way To Nowhere (complete with its insistent riff) from the band’s latest CD – Grace And Melody, I was reminded of a band called Burning Tree. Remember them? Well, it turns out there may well be a good reason for this.
Grace And Melody was produced by ex-Black Crowes guitarist Marc Ford – who, prior to that gig, was also the Tree’s frontman/guitarist.
As it happens, the Black Crowes have played a big part in The Steepwater Band’s evolution, it was at one of their gigs that the trio – vocalist/guitarist Jeff Massey, drummer Joe Winters and bassist Tod Bowers – got together in the first place.
Fast-forward a decade to 2008 and they’re in the studio with recording with Ford, after having met (and shared a stage jamming Neil Young’s Cortez The Killer) at a festival in Spain the previous summer.
The Steepwater Band are planning a trip to the UK and Europe later in the year, but in the meantime, wrap your ears round this.

Was turned onto these guys a few months back after a review in CR and promptly bought the album Revelation Sunday, which is a corker. Not heard Grace and Melody yet, but any collaboration between the band and Marc Ford is sure to be superb.
I can’t download it.
The link goes to a streamed Oasis song.
A very good Oasis song. Possibly their best.
to download it right click and ‘Save File As’. but i do believe that is the Steepwater Band you are hearing not Oasis.
These guys smoke! Thanks for turning me on. I went to steepwater.com and they have a jukebox with a ton more songs. The first one (“Fall of the Day”) is awesome I think it’s on the new album too.
