Track Of The Day: Phantom Limb
Phantom Limb has just released a new single. They provide the latest Track Of The Day. Check out all Tracks Of The Day here.
Formed in 2004, the band combine country and old style r&b. Says singer Yolanda Quartey: “Country and gospel are the same, just with different race singers. “People have tried to segregate music, but it’s impossible. When I was a kid, I sang Dolly Parton as well as Aretha Franklin. The Staples Singers play a really big part in who the heck I am. But at the same time, The Band are pivotally important to what we do”.
From Bristol, the rest of the band are guitarists Stew Jackson and Luke Cawthra, keyboard player Dan Moore, bassist Andy Moore and drummer Matt Jones. Their self-titled, debut album was released in 2008. And in February, second album The Pines is put out. It was produced by Marc Ford of Black Crowes fame and features a guest appearance from Rival Sons singer Jay Buchanan – and the presence of this pair gives you a strong indication of where the band are coming from.
“The Pines, lyrically, kind of describes the album,” says Quartey. “It’s about being in a situation that just isn’t conducive to you being creative or happy. For me, the band is escapism. It allows me to get away from the things I’m not interested in – having to work in tired musical situations – and get to the things that I am interested in.”
