Track Of The Day: OOIOO

When you’ve got an odd name like OOIOO, you’ve got every right to be compared to a post new-wave psychedelic freakout in an overcrowded Tokyo sauna. Which is why this Japanese japery is our Track Of The Day. Click here for previous Tracks Of The Day.

Armonico Hewa is OOIOO’s sixth release since 1998 – and as with everything they’ve previously done, this album is intense, itinerant, noisily experimental and dynamic.

As befits someone who was in both UFO Or Die and the Boredoms, vocalist/guitarist Yoshimi has a crazed approach that combines atonal rhythms, dysfunctional melodies and a sense of progression that owes much to John Zorn and even Captain Beefheart, This is not fluffy music for fluffed-up suits. But a creative wail.

Yoshimi is joined here by guitarist Kayan, bassist Aya and drummer Ai on a record that makes The Slits sound like Girls Aloud. This is truly the sound of warmly welcoming disintegration.
