Track Of The Day: Mr Big
‘Supergroup’ is a much-maligned term. Yet sometimes assembling an all-star cast works. Triumphantly. This was most certainly the case with Mr Big, who provide today’s Track Of The Day. Click here for previous Tracks Of The Day.
The band started in 1988, featuring the colourful and varied talents of vocalist Eric Martin, guitarist Paul Gilbert, bassist Billy Sheehan and drummer Pat Torpey. They came together with a pedigree that already included Robert Plant, David Lee Roth, UFO, Racer X and the Eric Martin Band.
Expectations were high, and fulfilled on a succession of impressive albums, combining exhaustive virtuosity with exhilarating songs. Even the replacement of Gilbert with Richie Kotzen failed to slow their momentum.
The band eventually split up in 2002. But returned with the original line-up earlier this year – the first time this quartet had played together in a decade, and also a fitting way to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their self-titled, debut album.
To celebrate the band filmed and recorded their show at the famous Budokan in Tokyo. This has now been released as the CD/DVD titled Budokan – Reunion Tour 2009. Which proves these chaps have lost none of their sting and zing.
