Track Of The Day: Micki Free
Grammy Award winner Micki Free is a man with a background that includes playing on some very big records. But now he’s out there rocking on new album American Horse, and he provides the new Track Of The Day. Check out all Tracks Of The Day.
In his career, Free has played with Shalamar, Janet Jackson, Wendy O. Williams and Crown Of Thorns. He’s been managed by Diana Ross (yes, that one!). His work adorns the Footloose and Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack albums, and he’s spent the last five years making Native American flute music (he has both Comanche and Cherokee blood).
But with the new album, Free’s back in the rock world.
“This is a real rock album, and I’m very proud of it. I was just inspired to write some cool rock stuff again. To me, rock ‘n’ roll is dead as we know it; there’s some cool music out there, but it’s not rock ‘n’ roll, classic stuff like we used to know – Zep, Hendrix, Cream, all of that. That’s what I do. My heart is in rock ‘n’ roll, and that’s what’s on this album.”
Texas-born, Free was brought up mostly in Europe, where he discovered Jimi Hendrix, Cream and the Rolling Stones – and their influences can be heard on American Horse.
Free and his Electric Blues Experience Band (also featuring bassist David Santos and drummer Cindy Blackman) are playing at Hard Rock Calling in Hyde Park on Saturday, June 26.
