Track Of The Day: MGMT
Their music has been called ’shape-shifting psychedelic pop’ – and MGMT have already racked up a Grammy award, a Top 20 UK album, plus a gold record in America. Now the Brooklyn duo have given us the latest Track Of The Day. Check out all the latest Tracks Of The Day.
Starting out as The Management, the pair of Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden got together in 2002 while at University. They graduated in 2005, with debut album Climbing To New Lows inadvertently being released that same year. This was intended as a demo only, but was leaked through the internet.
Changing the band’s name to MGMT – there was already another act using The Management – the duo signed to Columbia (after putting out the EP Time To Pretend through Cantora Records in 2005) and released the album Oracular Spectacular in 2007. Since then it’s been a steady rise for the band, which has included playing with Paul McCartney, who’s a big fan, Radiohead, Jane’s Addiction and Flaming Lips.
They even successfully sued Nicolas Sarkozy, the President of France, for using their song Kids for political purposes; they donated all the money received to charity. Now the two multi-instrumentalists have been joined by Matthew Asti (bass), James Richardson and Will Berman (drums/backing vocals) for new album Congratulations, due out next month. Incidentally, they play Heaven in London on March 18.
