Track Of The Day: Lahannya
With roots in goth, industrial and alternative music, female vocalist Lahannya has never stood back from the cultural edge. Get a sense of her musical adventure with today’s Track Of The Day. Click here for previous Tracks Of The Day.
Her individual approach first got her noticed several years ago on an EP called The Drowning, which was compared favourably to Garbage.
However, Lahannya really found her focus on moving from Brighton to London in 2004. Immersing herself in the darkly dense Slimelight scene, she soon became a cult figure.
But it was when teaming up with German bassist Lutz Demmler that things took flight. The resultant album, 2007’s Shotgun Reality, displayed a keen darkness and sense of unnerving starkness.
Lahannya was fleshed out into a proper band, with guitarist Chris Milden and drummer Belle completing the line-up.
Since then, things have moved at a considerable pace. Last year’s EP Welcome To The Underground was conceptual, painting a bleak picture of a futuristic Britain, where individuality is shackled by the ramifications of fear.
This has been taken a step further on the just released album Defiance – this is not happy music for cheery people. But it does have a hauntingly fateful charisma.
