Track Of The Day: Hydrogyn
Hydrogyn are a female-fronted band from Kentucky. They’re good enough to have top producer Michael Wagener proclaiming, “Hydrogyn is going to be big, very big…”. And they provide today’s Track Of The Day. Check out the most recent Tracks Of The Day at www.classicrockmagazine.com/tag/track-of-the-day
The band started in 2003, featuring vocalist Julie Westlake, guitarists Jeff Westlake and Jeff Boggs, bassist Jason Fields and drummer Jerry Lawson.
Says Julie: “Most of us had played together in some way before we formed the band. When Jeff Westlake decided to put the band together, he called up some of the guys he had played with before and asked them to join. As for me, I was actually doing some country shows at the time. The band began auditions for a vocalist, but wasn’t having much luck. Then one day Jeff came to me and asked if I thought I could do rock. I figured I might as well give it a shot, and here we are today.
“We like good rock and roll! Heavy guitars and melodic vocals with lyrics, that you can understand. We try to keep our stuff original. We all just like heavy melodic rock.”
Debut album Best Served With Volume was self-released in ‘04, and was strong enough to persuade Wagener to take them on for 2006’s Bombshell (on the Da label), by which time Dave Moody had moved in on bass.
By the time, the band signed to Demolition Records for 2008’s Deadly Passions, there had been a major line-up shift, with the Westlakes now joined by bassist Chris Sammons and drummer Jeff Kitchen. And at the end of last year, Kitchen was replaced by Josh Cumberland. Currently, the new look Hydrogyn are working on a new album, again with Wagener at the helm.
