Track Of The Day: Get The Blessing
If, like Classic Rock’s Paul ‘Dr Jazz’ Henderson, you love filling your ears with the sounds of Captain Beefheart, Soft Machine and general free-form nurdlings, then you’ll certain enjoy today’s Track Of The Day. Click here for previous Tracks Of The Day.
Get The Blessing come from Bristol and feature Jim Barr [bass], Clive Deamer [drums], Pete Judge [trumpet] and Jake McMurchie [saxophone].
Nope, not a geetar in sight. But then what do you expect from a band who got together during an Ornette Coleman fan club meeting in a café that apparently serves really tasty bleach cakes?
They certainly don’t take themselves too seriously, despite all their prog credentials, even going so far as to wear paper bags over their heads at gigs. Why? “So people won’t see us laughing!” they say.
Their current album, Bugs In Amber, suggests a sound that mirrors what might happen if Muse got lost in a time tunnel, and came out occupying space in Frank Zappa’s head. It’s a little wonky, a lot surreal and definitely something that musicians will love for its complexity, while others will get off on the sheer tongue-in-cheek dexterity and groove.
