WORDS: Dave Ling
As Slade’s Noddy Holder pointed out a few days ago in our Blog story The Art Of Being A Rock Singer – Is It Dying?, “there are so few powerful voices – even less unique ones.” Holder also made another pertinent point when he added: “The better and more original voices tend to be the female singers, which is odd as the phenomenon has been traditionally male-dominated.”
Well, here’s another to add to an ever-growing list of top quality new female singers which includes Beth Hart and Joanne Shaw Taylor.
Until two days ago, to my utmost shame, I had never heard the name of Esther O’Connor. Now I can’t stop playing Making Me Clean, a plaintive yet powerfully sung tune with an acoustic-based bluesy framework and plenty of commercial potential. Juxtaposed nicely with the perfectly-meshed male backing voice, Miss O’Connor’s vocal technique seems as fiery and precocious as her red hair.
Hailing from Scotland – Glasgow, to be precise – Esther spends a lot of her time gigging and has release two records to date. Her second album, Right Here, received a five star review in the Sunday Express. The critics have likened her to Sheryl Crow, Stevie Nicks and Suzanne Vega, though we prefer the description at her MySpace site: “Neil Young meets Beyoncé at Joni Mitchell’s house.”

A new single, Innocence, is released on July 6 via RedHed Records.

.
Excellent song!
It’s been stuck in my head all day… Looking forward to hearing some more, great production!
Oh yes, I like this!
Ecxellent or should I say Ester-llent…..
As soon as Esther’s voice is heard. You know you have another great track,
It is refreshing to hear someone with a voice that is as clear and different. Not often something new comes along and this time it is special.

I just love the Right Here album and this new track shows we are in for a real treat when album #3 shows up. The range of Esther’s voice on Making Me Clean is the real trick of the song. From crystal clear high notes and the lovely little ‘catch’ she gets in her voice in the lower, slower, parts of the song.
A real winner and let’s have a nice article in Classic Rock Magazine about her, everyone should get to see the best head of red on the music scene today! There must be something in the water in Glasgow!!
If you are tired of listening to the same old music take
a leap of faith and listen to all of Esthers musicShe is
phenomenally talented and passionate but dont take my word for it listen yourself!!!!!
We have all discovered Esther, lets promote this talented young musician. Her music is fresh and has a character all of its own. There is so much musical rubbish around that still sells, lets hope that quality will out “Go girl”
Keep music live.
One of my better decisions was leaving the pub to make sure I got to see the unknown support act for Wishbone Ash in Edinburgh last year. Had never heard of Esther then, but have seen her several times since. Always a great night and this is another superb song.
This track has depth and variety rarely heard, it is a refreshing and unique twist on folk rock which I don’t hear often… Good work Esther!
Wow!
This is good! Since I first heard Esther in Tarbert summer 2007 I´ve been telling everyone here in Sweden how fantastic Esther and her band is!
