Track Of The Day: Epica

Dutch symphonic metal is almost commonplace these days. Well, there’s Within Temptation, After Forever and Epica… and it’s the last lot who provide today’s Track Of The Day. Click here for previous Tracks Of The Day.

Epica were formed in 2002 by one-time After Forever guitarist Mark Jansen. He brought in vocalist Simone Simons, guitarist Ad Sluijter, bassist Yves Huts, keyboard player Coen Janssen and drummer Jeroen Simons.

Their debut album, The Phantom Boy, followed in 2003, with second record Consign To Oblivion arriving two years later. The same year they composed and recorded the soundtrack for Dutch movie The Joyride; this was released under the title The Score: An Epica Journey.

In 2007 Epica signed to Nuclear Blast, releasing the album The Divine Conspiracy. However drummer Simons quit the band and was replaced by God Dethroned’s Arien van Weesenbeek. The Epica style was now getting a lot more complex.

Now in 2009, the band have released two new albums. There’s the live album The Classical Conspiracy – Live In Miskolc, Hungary and the other is Design Your Own Universe.

Now you can check out the band’s own twist on the symphonic metal genre by downloading The Classical Set Medley at www.epica.nl/?page=downloads&show=audio
