Track Of The Day: Dirty Pearls
The Dirty Pearls are the sort of wild’n’sleazy New York rock’n'roll band that you just gotta love. So, we’re delighted that they’ve made a re-recording of a recent single available for today’s Track Of The Day. Check out all the latest Tracks Of The Day.
Words: Sleazegrinder
It’s high time we check in with NYC’s sleaziest sons, The Dirty Pearls. To refresh your memory, the Pearls are downtown dangerhounds with a serious Stones fixation, the literal and metaphorical bastards sons of Johnny Thunders and Joey Ramone, the most charming gang of pointy-booted ne’er-do-wells in the drunk tank.
Alarming/awesome fact: The Dirty Pearls have sold out every hometown show they’ve ever played. They broke attendance records at famed and fabled rock club The Bowery, crushing Amy Winehouse’s previous record by… well, half the roster of a local strip club and a couple cops, at least. Their music’s been played on The Hills, and many other MTV shows people like you and I are too cool to watch, and they’ve opened for everyone from The New York Dolls to Twisted Sister. Which is all well and good, but what have they been up to lately?
Well, they’ve just recently been in the studio with fabled record producer David Kahne (Paul McCartney, The Bangles, Stevie Nicks, The Strokes, etc.) to re-record their previous smash hit, New York City Is A Drug. And the band have graciously offered Classic Rock readers a free download of it!
“The song is a one-off single for the moment,” says Dirty Pearls drummer Marty E. “David is really good friends with our managers. There was a previous version of the song that we recorded last year with (producer) Daniel Rey floating around. David heard it, and wanted to take a crack at remixing it. He did so, and it was way better, but one thing led to another, and we wound up in the studio with him. It looks like we might be doing more work with him as well.”
Marty tells Classic Rock that the recording session was a memorable one.
“It was a crazy experience being in the studio with him. He’s a genius, he really is. I mean, he’s worked with everyone from Tony Bennett to Linkin Park to Fishbone to The Strokes. I learned more in one day in the studio with him than in all of high school and college combined!”
Besides the single and an upcoming appearance at South By South West, Marty reports that The Dirty Pearls also have a new member in their ranks.
“Yeah, we got a new guitarist since we spoke last. His name is Tommy Mokas, and he fits in great. His first show with us was at the Viper Room in LA last Fall. Afterward, he was standing on top of a newspaper dispenser on Sunset Boulevard, grabbing the light post for support, howling at the moon. After that, I knew we were on to something.”
Here’s the brand spankin’ new New York City Is A Drug.
