Planet Rock gets the chop

Planet Rock, the classic rock radio station, is to be axed by its owner GCap Media.

dia.

GCap, which runs Classic FM and London’s Capital Radio, is the UK’s largest commercial radio broadcaster.

It said it will pull the plug on Planet Rock because it wants to concentrate on its main FM stations in a bid to revive the business.

Planet Rock is broadcast digitally. Another digital GCap station, theJazz, is also to be axed.

GCap CEO Fru Hazlitt said digital “was not an economically viable growth platform for GCap Media”.

Hazlitt added in baffling biz-speak that GCap will prioritise “brands and content that can win within a multi-platform environment” which means closing “non-core” stations such as Planet Rock.

Has this guy just stumbled upon English in a box in the attic? Who talks like that? And what the hell’s a ‘growth platform’ when it’s at home? Sounds like something you’d grow artificial spines on.

Sad news, but not surprising if they are trying to flog the company. It is however very short sighted. Digital radio is in it’s infancy but will become the norm in the future, and as has been witnessed in the .com world those companies that are in from the start become household names, Amazon, and Google to name but two. To cast of a brand at this early stage seems a little short sighted.

I can’t believe they are pulling the plug on Planet Rock. I guess it is not high profile enough for them! Its a great shame. I will really miss it!

Bugger! Which is a platform free, scalable pre-watershed response to a very short term expediency.

sad news. time for CR to buy PR?

Charlotte The Harlot

Really upset by this, I’m guessing that all Classic Rock readers who have access to digital would listen to Planet Rock on a regular basis. Maybe it’s celeb presenters, Cooper, Wakeman, etc should put their hands in their pockets and buy the station or set up a similar one. Sad day.

Absolutely bloody gutted. What short-sighted twats. Classic Rock should use it’s influence to get it bought by people who do actually give a shit about the music so many people love.

S*** didnt see that coming.

this is utter shit!! where else are we all gonna find a radio station that plays sumthin decent!

Shona Cutt

Balls! What the fuck am I gonna listen to on the radio now??? I only got a digital radio to listen to Planet Rock! FM????!!! GAH!

Bastards, the lot of them!

Petition anyone?

I think this is utter bs, the only descent rock station there is in the Uk, and they are pulling the plug… what a waste.

I hope someone steps in and buys the station…

I agree with Shona, Lets start a petition.

Steve Preston

Sad day, for sure. Just hope someone buys it. Whilst Wakeman is great, most of the “star” presenters must be, frankly, a highly paid waste of money. All we want is a knowledgeable DJ playing great music. Stand up Nicky Horne. Yes, lets get a petition up.

Glyn James

We must not let this happen.Classic Rock needs Planet Rock and us die hard rock fans must keep it.Send e-mails to P.R. show support. Can classic rock contact some of our rock heros to see if they will help.I dont have one share in any company, but if a buy out was done i would buy some shares to help and keep the best and only good thing to get on the air in years.Keep on rocking Planet Rock.

Every CR reader I know listens to PR and vice-versa. The two compliment each other perfectly so it’s logical CR should lead the campaign to save PR.
Unfortunately, there will only be three weeks before the March 31 deadline when the next issue comes out _ not a lot of time to be effective.
But whatever happens, the magazine should do everything in its power to keep the genre on our radios.
Just as we haven’t got another decent mag to read, there’d be a massive music void on our radios too.

Hi all,

Please sign the petition at the link above…..and hopefully, if we show enough support, a white knight will appear and buy the station…

Others have also set up website blogs and Facebook groups – please check them out and SPREAD THE WORD!!!

Claasic Rock and Planet Rock are like Peaches and Cream, Apple Pie and Custard, Torvill and Dean. Now, personally after seeing what the “Men In Black” have done to PR. Not sure if I would be comfortable with Future Publishing taking it on. I will say however and imho I am a “Classic Rock” subscriber only due to being an avid “Planet Rock” listener. In certainly will not be in “Classic Rock’s” interest should the PR brand dissappear. In fact I would go as far as to say I think it may well have a detrimental effect on sales. Please “Classic Rock” do want you can to save our ONLY NATIONAL ROCK STATION.

Thank You

Nigel

P.S. Oh yes, nearly forgot. But PLEASE DON’T BUY IT!

Where else can you hear such fantastic music?

This is about as sensible as the decision to stop testing language students’ ability to converse in their chosen foreign language. Oral exams are possibly too stressful apparently! My arse! what a bunch of total fuckwits!
Like others I only bought a DAB radio so that I could listen to PR, the most amazing radio staion ever! Come on Rick and buddies – can’t you do something here?
