The New Issue Of Classic Rock Is On Sale Now

Thirty-five years on, we look at the making of a monumental rock classic: Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti.

The new Classic Rock is in the shops now – and the issue comes in a lavish cardboard wallet that artfully recreates the original Physical Graffiti album cover, right down to those crazy little cut-out windows. Amazing!

There’s also a fabulous FREE CD: a label sampler dedicated to Classic Rock’s own Powerage label. Ten tracks from rock’s hottest new bands, including Million Dollar Reload, Nonpoint, Voodoo Six, Bigelf, Pearl and Hell City Glamours.

Here’s a taster of the contents of the new issue (No.149, cover date September):

Led Zeppelin
The band is getting death threats. John Paul Jones wants to quit. A backlash against the rock aristocracy is rumbling… With all this and more going on, how did Zep manage to pull the brilliance that is Physical Graffiti out of the bag?

Iron Maiden
Is the title of their new album The Final Frontier a not-so-subtle message: are Maiden really thinking of quitting? We caught up with them in Texas to sound out the rumours.

Chess Records
When Marshall Chess introduced blues legends Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf to the psychedelic rock world in a bid to revitalise their careers, it was a huge gamble. And one with mixed results…

Heart
They were megastars in the 80s. Then grunge came along and burst their bubble. Classic Rock catches up with Heart’s Ann and Nancy Wilson as they return to their roots.

Gaslight Anthem
They’re about to go global, and their mates include Bruce Springsteen and Social Distortion’s Mike Ness. Classic Rock talks to singer Brian Fallon about his new life, and some of his very famous new friends.

The Union
“This band is a blank page. A licence to do what we like,” former Thunder guitarist Luke Morley says of his and long-time writing partner Pete Shoulder’s new band.

The Cramps
It’s 1979. Outta-New York rockabilly-spiked punks The Cramps are creating a stir with their mix of trashy garage and horror B-movie aesthetic. Nick Kent meets the ghouls at the start of their career.

All this and more in the new issue of Classic Rock, on sale now.

As a subscriber I have had the mag for nearly a week.
Correct me if I am wrong but Im sure that Bon Jovi and Aerosmith played live dates at the O2 in June?
They did? oh right. So where is CR review of these gigs?

Surely CR could have got down the O2 1 of the 12 night Bon Jovi played?

Also how many more Led Zeppelin covers and boring stories do we have to endure?

Cayleigh

Yeah, I’ve also been waiting for the Aerosmith @ the O2 review. Personally I thought their performance there was incredible: so much better than Donington, and they rocked the socks off everyone there…

BAD ANIMAL NO#7

Why no HEART cover!!!!!!

Its HEARTs brand new album for several years and they deserve a cover photo or at least a mention to say a new interview is inside!!!!!!

I will only buy it for HEART. They rock bigtime.
Lets hop[e they announce a UK tour.

Maybe CR will put them on the cover then!!!!!

HEART derserve more respect from a so called ROCK magazine.

having been a fan for nearly 30 years, the new Maiden album is absolutely boring. Classic Rock should know that too !!! Having said that… hope to see ‘em live in Singapore someday.
Up The Irons !!!

Freddie

Think its been well discussed on this forum previously that Bon Jovi are NOT a Classic Rock Band and should not be reviewed within these pages. Maybe have a look at Womans Weekly or similar; that more suited to that kind of pop band

HuffStuff

Yeah, CR does get a little Zep crazy — but “Physical Graffiti” is one of my top five desert island discs so I’m looking forward to this issue. In the States, we don’t get CR on the newstands until a month later, so I finally had to subscribe. Hopefully this will be in my mailbox in the next few days!

Nancy Wilson of Heart speaks ‘Red Velvet Car’…

In the 1970s, Heart—featuring wild-haired Seattle sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson—filled arenas with their muscular, commanding hard-rock anthems: “Crazy on You,” “Magic Man,” “Barracuda.” In the ’80s they did it again, albeit with a lot……

I was expecting a full run down on the HV Festival this issue??

Mark S.

Zeppelin and boring in the same sentence?! Go F*ck yourself.

Master Hare

Well, I think it’s a good issue. Does the cover really matter? How long do people take to look at the cover? Ok, Nancy Wilson is a lot prettier than the Phys Graf houses, but it’s a MUSIC magazine. The reviews are the best part of most magazines, CR included. I bought the new Foghat album after last issue’s review, and it’s fantastic.

Ehh this is a small gripe but wheres the new avenfed sevenfold album review??

Steve Emmerson

Freddie – Bon Jovi not a classic rock band? please.
SWW and NJ are among the best rock albums of all time.
All I want is one live review and thats obviosuly too much for CR who think we want to read another Led Zep story and look at another Led Zep cover.

Big Deek

Liam. Bloody great call. The AV7 Nightmare cd is on a constant play rotation at the moment. As a 47 year old man this is what get the blood flowing. Me and the young lad (16) will be down the fron at the Stone Sour/AV7 SECC gig giving it large.

Actually listen to the cd and thin Metallica the black album. Many many similarities. Portnoy drums like a man possesed also.

Great work on the cardboard wallet, the original Physical Graffiti album cover,am gonna frame it up.One of the reason,I love C.R. ,beautiful pictures,be it the covers or in the mag itself. Keep up the great work……C.R…..MAG FOR ME ALWAYS..

Just received my issue through the post and I have to say that the Zeppelin article is immense. Unlike many others, I believe that you can never have enough of a good thing. I never tire of reading about Zeppelin and I thoroughly enjoyed the insightful and detailed account of the creation of Physical Graffiti. Sure, Classic Rock has published an extraordinary amount of articles about Zeppelin over the years but, when the creation of the features is this good, who are we to complain? Terrific recreation of the album cover too by the way. Made me wish I had grown up in the seventies!!!

Never can get enough led zep covers and stories! Bring em on! Great job again!

@Steve Emerson Clearly the punters do want another Led Zep cover because they obviously sell hence why they come back every now and then, but they can’t please everybody.
