Just checking in on this discussion. David Watts please read my earlier comments you moron. You are correct, this is a funny and predictable discussion. Davies invented distorted power chords? Study your music history, if anyone invented distorted power chords it was Link Wray. Davies and Townsend would tell you what an influence he has been on their guitar sound. Link wary was not born in England, if he had been he probably would not have invented anything. Brits are more innovative? Where does rock and roll come from again? Before the Beatles and Stones there was Elvis(not Costello, but Presley) Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Gene Vincent, Fats Domino, Ike Turner, I could go on and on. This would have been aroud the time you all were drinking bathtub gin and listening to Cliff Richard(is tthat his name?). Youl all did not invent a damn thing. Before the Sex pistols, The Damned, and The Clash (the most pretentious band ever) there was The New york dolls, Ramones Iggy and the stooges – those bands rose up in response to all the pretetious prog rock crap coming from England at that time. Study your history. You need to take a road trip to the US. You need to go to Austin, Memphis, Nashville, Detroit(if you have the balls) and then New Orleans, then you will know what you don’t know.

This is an funny, but predictable, discussion. EVH can play fast. EVH is a very popular guitarist. As a drummer, I don’t care. Fast guitarists are a dime a dozen and usually have nothing interesting to say – they make good typists. Dave Davies invented distorted power chords. That in itself is something EVH can never top. Dave makes no money from royalties from VH. He played all of his solos. He’s not totally self-indulgent like EVH. ‘You Really Got Me’ and ‘All Day and All of the Night’ changed the face of R’R; nothing VH ever did made any real innovative impact; just loud, dumb music for 16 yr. olds. The Kinks had 14 or 15 major hits in England and 6 in the US (they were banned for years in the US). The Kinks records over 20 albums. Dave Davies has more variety in his playing than EVH could every think of. Van Halen are a joke and will always been seen as one by serious music fans. The Kinks are regarded as one of the most innovative bands in history; Van Halen never will be. Study your music history. You might learn something (and Brits are generally more innovative). Get over it.

Dave Davies is not comparible to Eddie Van Halen…It is insulting to compare Dave to Eddie, Dave is superior in talent to Van Halen. That said, Dave should be flattered that Van Halen mimicked Dave and the Kinks, and brought more attention to the Kinks. The Kinks and Dave have and always will be under-rated, they are in my opinion the best rock group ever.

To all those who are criticizing Ray and Dave for collecting royalty checks for the VH version, I am pretty sure they actually don’t do that.

They made their first deal when they were practically kids and got taken like so many musicians of their time. I don’t think they own the rights to their early songs. This is what their 1970 album “Lola versus Powerman and the Moneygoround” is about. This is why you only see their early stuff in commercials – they won’t degrade what they actually own.

So I guess, basically, you can stuff it if you think they should just shut up and buy a Mai Tai with their nice royalty money.

Dave can rest assured the Kinks version will outlast VH’s version. It’s already happening. I hear the Kinks version a lot more on TV and movies.

I was in front row for VH in 1986 (sammy’s first tour) and was in front row for Ray Davies this past march. When VH are in their mid sixties and can put on a show like ray, then we’ll talk. It’s a shame Ray and Dave can’t get together and jam. I encourage people to read Ray’s autoboigraphy called X-ray. It will be then you realize the brilliance that the Kinks are.
