10 years on from their 1999 debut album, there’s no excuse for never having heard The Atomic Bitchwax before now.
Monster Magnet fans know them best as the one-time side project of MM guitarist Ed Mundell. Mundell fronted the band until 2002, releasing two studio albums and an odds-and-sods collection. (Second album, II, featured a cover of namesakes Atomic Rooster’s Play The Game.)
In 2005, bassist/vocalist Chris Kosnik and drummer Bob Pantella (also an alumni of Monster Magnet) drafted in Finn Ryan (of Core) on guitar and vocals – and they’ve since released third album (called, um, III), and latest effort TAB4. (That stop gap album Boxriff wasn’t called 3.5 or ‘Live Album with Some Studio Tracks’ is a miracle.)
If today’s track is anything to go by, the album could be their best yet. Revival swaggers like one of the great rock anthems of the 70s, built on muscular riffs, a violent squall of a solo, multi-tracked vocals and lyrics about, you know, kissing the waves and fucking the sky, that kinda thing.
If ever an MP3 sounded like it could stand on the edge of a mountain and chop it down with the edge of its bitrate – it’s this one. Previous Tracks Of The Day have included songs from Dylan, Jane’s Addiction, Placebo – but this could be the best track yet.
