Shirley Manson triggers sex abuse teacher hunt
Shirley Manson has triggered a hunt for a teacher who may have sexually abused the Garbage singer and others when she was 15.
She’s explained in a newspaper report how she had a relationship with a music tutor before she’d reached the legal age of consent – but ended it when she discovered he was having similar affairs with other girls.
Now Edinburgh City Council is looking into the matter, which Manson has discussed before, and a spokesperson insists they’re taking it “very seriously.”
Earlier this month the vocalist told the Sydney Morning Herald: “My first so-called relationship was with my music teacher at 15. I would have sex with him in the back of his van after class. When I found out he was having sex with every one of my mates, it stopped.”
The Scotsman reveals that the tutor, who has not been named, was not a member of staff at the City Of Edinburgh Music School, which Manson attended at the time the events are said to have unfolded. Instead he was involved with a youth drama group.
Now council officials are examining their records to discover whether complaints were recorded during the 1980s and whether action was taken as a result.
The spokesperson says: “We take any allegations of this nature very seriously and we are currently looking to establish more information about this case.”
In the Morning Herald article Manson discussed her attitude to the opposite sex, saying: “I had warped ideas of men before I joined Garbage. I thought every bloke was cheating on his wife or girlfriend; it was an unhealthy and hysterical idea of what the male was. It is not the case at all now.”
