Scott Gorham Pays Tribute To Phil Lynott

The late Thin Lizzy mainman would have been 60 years old this week.

Thin Lizzy guitarist Scott Gorham has issued the following brief but pertinent update:

“Man, you don’t realise how quick the years have gone until someone reminds you that Phil would have been 60 this year.

“He had such a huge impact on so many people around the world; I know he did with everyone that played in Thin Lizzy.

“To this day he is still missed by all of us.”

Lynott, who was born on August 29, 1949, died on January 4, 1986 from heart failure and pneumonia after an 11-day fight for his life.

The 36-year-old star had been admitted to Salisbury Hospital in Wiltshire with a serious kidney and liver infection on Christmas Day, after he collapsed from a drink and drug binge at his home in Surrey.

Classic Rock echoes Gorham’s sentiments. Check out Phil in all his glory here.

Sadly, I’m too young to have seen the classic Lizzy of the 70s, but he’s sorely missed – and still alive in the heart of every true rock fan.

live and dangerous, man what a show

long time lizzy fan

I agree with Scott

Badly missed. 1984, I was just bottom right of this: http://www.ukrockfestivals.com/nostell-grand-slam.jpg

Saw Phil at one of his last gigs with Lizzy at the Reading Festival in 1983. The Thunder & Lightning line up, John Sykes, Scott Gorham, Brian Downey, Darren Wharton and of course Mr Lynott, was one the classic line ups and I still think if they hadn’t split, Phil might still be alive today. He lost the will to live without Lizzy. Damn shame.

I was lucky enough to see Thin Lizzy live on both the renegade and thunder and lightning tours. It was through listening to Lizzy’s music that i really got into rock in 1981. Phil was my first ever musical idol and i managed to get his autograph after a gig with Gary Moore in 1985. I still treasure this and i still love to listen to the man and his brilliant lyrics.

Phil was One of my first heroes after seeing the band on the Jailbreak tour of 76′ at the Liverpool Stadium, I managed to meet him once at the Hammersmith Odeon in 81,I was lucky enough to work with one of Lizzy’s first producers, the stories He told me about were the stuff of legend,:”NO BASS ON WHISKEY IN THE JAR!”God bless you Phil!!!

As we gather excitedly (¬_¬ ) to watch X-Factor this week, we must reflect back to a time when musicians had their own talent, charisma and songwriting craft…

One of the very best.

Greatest rocker ever! Started listning to it when my neighbour left a tape(J the fox\Fighting) in my ghetto-blaster the same week Phil died…

I was fortunate and privilaged to see Lizzy on 3 occasions at the Glasgow apollo, every gig they were on top form and the memories are still strong in my mind.R.I.P. Phill.

Long Live Lizzy.

Saw Lizzy in ´83 on the MOR in Kaiserslautern/Germany and I can remember how sad a lot of older guys around us were when the gig (and Lizzy…) was over. Me, I will never forget waiting at the backdoor after a gig of the “new” Lizzy without Philo when Scott Gorham came out and I wanted to ask him to sign Lizzy-LPs – I was so struck that I forgot all english words I wanted say and just stood there like a complete idiot. He laughed and gave me a big hug. I miss Lizzy dearly…RIP Phil..

Just to let you all know that Scott will be making an appearance at ‘Music Live 2009′, at the NEC, Birmingham (UK), at 2pm on Saturday 7th November, on the Engl amplifiers stand.

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, and in the 70’s Bill Graham put on these day-long outdoor festivals, calling them A Day On The Green. Multiple bands would play all day. One Day On The Green featured UFO, Cheap Trick, Journey, and Thin Lizzy. I knew them from “Jailbreak” and “The Boys Are Back In Town’, but not much else. When Lizzy appeared, I was sitting in the nosebleed section, far away from the band. The band, especially Phil Lynott BLEW ME AWAY!!! Phillip was one of the most powerful and charasmatic frontmen I have ever seen. His swashbuckling performance put him up with the best frontmen I’ve seen. I’m including Freddie Mercury, Robert Plant, David Lee Roth and Paul Stanley. Phil Lynott simply KICKED ASS.
