‘Satriani’s Better Than Eddie VH,’ says Hagar
Step aside Eddie Van Halen, Ronnie Montrose, Neal Schon and, er, Gary Pihl. Sammy Hagar reckons Joe Satriani is the best guitarist he’s ever worked with.
Satriani is one of Hagar’s collaborators in Chickenfoot, alongside ex-Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith.
“I’ve made this statement a million times – some people don’t like it, some people do – but Joe is the best guitarist I have ever played with,” Hagar said.
“That’s a strong statement. I realise that.
“You’ve got to give Eddie [Van Halen] a lot of love for his innovation of what he did as a stylist with the guitar. He broke a lot of ground.
“But Joe is a master. He can play anything and everything – folk, blues, jazz, hard rock, soft rock, fusion, you name it.
“As a guitar technician, Joe is the best guy I’ve ever stood in the same room with on any instrument.
“And he’s so soulful when he solos. He puts more feeling into a solo than any other player I’ve been with.”

What do you think? Is Joe a better guitarist that Eddie? Or is it unfair to compare the two stylistically? Post your comments – and let battle commence!

Neither Van Halen nor Joe Satriani, the best guitarist Sammy Hagar has worked with is Neal Schon!
The most intense solos EVER created are from Neil.
Eddie was the MAIN innovator of the instruments after Jimi Hendrix,he reshaped the role of electric guitar.
Joe Satriani is a great technical player but not as intense as Neil Schon and innovator as Van Halen.
Anyway they are 3 masters and Sammy is very fortunate
Probably correct in his assesment of techinique but where would the world be without EVH? Where would Satch be without EVH and where would Hagar have been without EVH? Probably have faded years ago. The rock world without Satch would be largely the same as it is now. That’s the difference in my humble opinion.
Technical Proficiency is not everything. Eddie seems to have “moved me” more over the years. My 2 cents.
Primo
Angus Young is better than those two Poofs combined!
Technically he is awesome, but there’s something about imperfection that really grabs me.
I find Satriani too clinical, my fav’s are Neal Schon, Iommi, and Nuno Bettencourt.
p.s loving the guitar tone from the solo on,”Rock and Roll Angels” track 5 on the new HnH album. Anyone know what guitar that is, its Strat’y but not hehe…
[...] Better Than Eddie VH,
…….And he states, its because Joe can play all styles of music,
Yes, Joe is better. 1978’s Van Halen was the first and last innovative album EVH played on. Play through Van Halens and Satrianis albums. Joe has a far better selection of riffs.
yeah but what is Joe Satriani famous for apart from the surfing the alien album and briefly becoming a member of Deep Purple!
Eddie Van Halen guitar playing in one of the most biggest rock bands of the late 70′’s to the mid 90’s has seen many up and coming guitarists like the late Dimebag Darrell strap it on and make it big,
There is nobody i know who has followed into Joe’s footsteps and whatever Sammy Hagar has said is pure rubbish and just another immature dig at his former bandmate as if he wasn’t in Van Halen he would have been more or less well known than being the motormouth of Montrose who hardly hit the hieghts as much as Van Halen did in their heyday.
im with eddie here but thats just me
What do you mean .. er Gary Pihl , total disrespect to a quality musician who played in Sammys early band and went on to join Boston.Respect needed i think.
Hagar sucks in his opinions. And always did.
It’s no matter how many milliones of notes you can play in a second. It’s all about sincerity, energy and how much soul you can bring to your music. And all these “soulful” solos of Satriani will never be comparable to what Van Halen did.
i dont think sammy hager should compare the two players un fair but i havent really listened to jo s play that much as far evanhalen is concerned he seems more inclined to be liveing on past glories when sammy joined vh it was a better band , i do beleive sammy is a great singer, but e vanhalen hasnt done a new album any new matrial so i cant comment, what i will say is i regard john sykes a real good hard rock player he is very underrated player after his spat with david coverdale, really unfair that was to john sykes for along time that went on and he was slated many times by coverdale , john sykes remains a real good player hes an enjoyment to listen to, but vanhalen is all tap tap which i find borein , give me a great riff over all this fancy stuff anyday , to me jo s might have taught some of the greats but steve vai is to fast of a player for me, dont like him at all. the one who could leave vai , van halen and satriani for dead is is rhandy rhodes jeseus watch him play he was way better than van halen . riffs very meaty real good stuff .
I’m no guitar player so i can only comment from what i hear and i think Joe is a more diverse guitarist but i love the tone of EVH’s playing. The VH sound is immense.
Satriani might be the best guitar player Sammy thinks he’s ever played with; BUT; it’s going to be very hard for them to to Montrose’s 1st album! That album is a classic rock’n'roll music history!
Hagar…has always been full of bulls**t…how long do you think Chickenfoot will last??
Im a fan of both EVH and Joe…but remember EVH changed the face of guitar playing forever.
Hey, didn’t Satch just win the Song of the Year Grammy?
IMO the members of Chickenfoot are capable of a *lot* better than what I’ve heard of their music so far. It’s very average.
Sammy is a bitter and twisted man.
He can make all the claims he likes about Van Halen selling more records and concert tickets with him, or all the cracks he likes about guitar players or even Diamond Dave’s hair, but it’s all smoke and mirrors.
When Sammy is lying awake at night, there’s a voice inside his head that he tries to ignore but can’t because he know in his heart of hearts that it speaks the plain and simple truth.
“Van Halen were better with Roth”
Over and over and over….
M
LOL what a bunch of freaking crybabies! this guy is better than that guy. He’s the best, She’s the best!.. Who give a rats ass who the best! they all have their own style. This world would be fuckin boring if they all played the same. If Hagar feels that way about Satriani? Great! Thats his opinion! He didn’t say Joe was God’s gift to guitar. Idiots, So quit ur crying.
I’m a fan of EVH, Sammy & Joe, but it’s so unfortunate Sammy disrespects the musicians he has once praised, what a shame. I’m really wishing a big surprise with Chickenfoot, & yes, how long will it last? will it be better than Zepp? I don’t think so, ’cause it’s about the passion & longevity, not only bad mouthing ol’ grumps, you now…
hagar u r full of crap…eddie vanhalen is the best u ever played with…chickfoot will never reach vanhalen status….cf album will sell about 400,000 copies if lucky and it will never b gold….just like all your solo records do……cf is just another sammy solo record…hagar u r so full of yourself and i dont know cuz your music always suck……..marshall,,marksville,louisiana
EVH is one of Rock’s all-time overrated guitarists. More importantly, Sammy Hagar is a B-list rock star at best. Can we talk about something else now?
jeez..whats all the fuss about..they are all great in there own way and very different..stop crying sammy and get on with the great singing that you do…they all make great music..out!!!!!!!!!!!
Jeff Beck is the best. Most innovative. Most versatile. Take VH over JS. JS is just too clinical to move you. a gazillion notes when one would do. Of the new breed I think Steve Morse is the most soulful.
Satch wouldnt do half the stuff he does if it wasnt for Eddie. Gorgan……EVH saved rock guitar!!! What are you talking about? Let me guess you listen to Faster Pussycat.
I like both, but Satriani has proved his longevity – he is still as active today, if not more so, than he ever was. This proves he still has an audience – which is evidence enough. I’m sure EVH would pack arenas worldwide if took to the road, but could he maintain this? – he probably could. I like them both for different reasons; Satriani, for his melodic ballads and smooth legatos; and EVH for his unique style and phrasing. Both have proved guitar pioneers, which is why it’s so difficult to place one above the other. Sorry, I just can’t do it.
Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal (G N’ R) Shits On Both Of Them
Sammy should just be grateful he has had the oppertunity to work with all those great guitarists!!! I would chop my right arm off to do that , but hen I wouldn’t be much cop in guitar lol
Satch, I think- listen to the coda of Satch Boogie. It’s JS’ Eruption, but he takes EVH’s speed to a new level. I’ve not heard Eddie really rape the strings since Hot For Teacher.
My two penneth.
Okay, okay, I am a huge Sammy fan, live nearby where he grew up (Monterey, CA), but… I have to question his assessment on this one. I have seen a lot of VH concerts and Sammy live with Ronny here in the Bay Area and caught clips of one of Chickenfoot’s debut shows at the SF Filmore. Here is my take: Eddie is a unique player as is Joe. Very different styles and honestly neither (as much as I like both of them) really have the soul connection or melody that makes your hair stand up on the back of you neck. If anyone is close it is Eddie. Joe is wild, fast and somewhat scattered in his play style. Lots of fast licks that often don’t really go together, half notes, sharps, then flats. I find it hard to get in the groove listening to his stuff. He is a cleaner player than Eddie but often just fast and noisy. Eddie has a lot more melody that sounds good and follows more compatible notes that just work. To be honest, I think Eddie got smoother teaming up with Sammy. Eddie is the flanger master, timing his licks just perfectly with his overdrive and flange pedal waves. Joe is a studio guy and a looper box master (loop boxes are for those who can’t find friends to play with..lol
Both are pros, both are good, neither are the best soulful, melodic guitar players in my assessment.
hallo,, i will know you .me your fans indonesia
EVH was great in his day, the greatest. He probably is the single most innovative guitarist since Hendrix. But his time is passed. Satch may have learned from EVH but now he stands miles above. Satch wears the crown as king of guitar. At least you guys agree that Satch and EVH are probably the two greatest guitarists since Hendrix, not copycats like Vai, or limited stylists like Johnson. Neal Schon? Wasn’t he the rhythmn guitarist for Santana?
Eddie actually told me that he believes Joe is much better than him. I got that directly from the horses mouth so I know it must be true. Tonight, when I’m fast asleep in bed, I’m hoping that horse is going to talk to me again, and tell me that I’m a better guitarist than either Eddie or Joe. Come on you guys! These guys each have their own styles as do all guitarists, so you can’t compare them. The fact that Joe can play anything Eddie plays when Eddie can play hardly anything Joe plays is neither her nor there. Oh, an Steve Morse is not a new breed of guitairsts, he has been around for as long as Eddie Van Halen…duh!!!
wow you know all the extreme chain saw overplaying of the 80s will never compare to Ronnie Montrose . When a guitar sounded like a guitar as a 70s guy when you heard Ronnie and other fast guys of that era play it sounded like a guy playing sometimes fast sometimes slower all the 80s stuff sounded all alike. get a copy of the speed of sound listen to a guitar ring and sing like Ronnie can make it sound Ronnie is the best pure hard rock player ever David Gouty
1st place ME
2nd place Joe Satriani
and the rest is just crap…
