Jagger repeats Stones ticket price joke

Doing it for you: Mick Jagger

Mick Jagger repeated his London joke about Rolling Stones ticket prices at the third of the band’s five 50th anniversary shows.

The frontman told a sold-out audience at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn that when they last played Beatles cover I Wanna Be Your Man “a carton milk only cost a quarter – and a ticket to the Stones was… I don’t want to go there.”

The concert began with a series of video tributes from big names including Elton John, Iggy Pop and Pete Townshend before a troop of drummers wearing gorilla masks marched across the stage, promoting the band’s new compilation album Grrr!.

Opening with Get Off Of My Cloud, the Stones appeared relaxed to the point of error, after Jagger having admitted they were more on edge during their first show in London last month. He introduced new song One More Shot but the band played Miss You, and before Going Down he said: “It’s blues time!” before turning to Keith Richards, exchanging words and saying: “Oh, it’s not? It’s blues time!”

Guitarist Keith Richards fluffed the main riff to The Last Time on several occasions during the song. Later, while Ronnie Wood struggled with a small technical problem, Richards said: “While we wait for Ronnie, I’ll wish you happy holidays.”

Guest Mary J Blige sang the female parts on Gimme Shelter while rising-star blues guitarist Gary Clark Jr – hotly tipped by Classic Rock – played on Going Down. The Trinity Wall Street Choir appeared for encore You Can’t Always Get What You Want.

Jagger told the crowd: “People say, ‘Why do you keep doing this? Why do you keep coming back?’ You’re the reason. Thank you for buying our records and coming to our shows for the last 50 years.”

The Stones have two more concerts to play as part of their tour, both in the Prudential Center in New Jersey. They’ve also been added to the bill of the Superstorm Sandy benefit show at Madison Square Garden on December 12, with ticket prices ranging from $150-2000.
