Shades Fights For Right To Use Wrathchild Name
Rocky Shades has hit back hard at attempts by his former Wrathchild pals Marc Angel and Eddie Star to exclusively grab the Wrathchild name for their band.
However Shades strongly disagrees – and intends to take legal action to prove this.
Shades has told Classic Rock:
“I’ve been informed by my lawyers that, unless I actually signed a document in 1990, giving up all rights to the name, then I certainly did not hand over those rights just by leaving the band back then. I know I never signed anything like that. So, I challenge them to produce the document.”
Shades insists that he will use the name Rocky Shades’ Wrathchild when his current band play at Hard Rock Hell III: The Vikings’ Ball in December.
“Marc and Eddie are claiming that I can’t use this [the Wrathchild name]. But that’s not true. Yes, they have trademarked the name ‘Wrathchild’, but even there I’m not certain they’ve done it correctly. However, if you know anything about trademarks, then you’ll realise that the pair of them registering it would not prevent me from calling my band Rocky Shades Wrathchild.
“What annoys me was that I started to use that name two or three years ago, when Marc and Eddie were calling their band Psychowrath. It was only after I’d done all the hard work in getting the name off the ground that they decided to change Pyschowrath to Wrathchild. In fact, Eddie told me at one point that they’d never use that name [Wrathchild] because nobody had any interest in the band any more!”
Shades believes that this ongoing legal battle will damage Angel and Star’s band more than his, and he also feels that they’ve done him a favour.
“Suddenly, everyone’s talking about me again. That can’t be bad. Besides, who’s the guy everyone remembers from Wrathchild in the old days? Me. Eddie was the light entertainment on the drums and who even knew Marc’s name?!
“In the end, I agree with Lance [Rocket, guitarist in the classic Stakk Attakk line-up from 1984]: ultimately, nobody should have the right to call their band ‘Wrathchild’ unless it’s all four of us together. But if Marc and Eddie want to call their band PsychoWrathchild, then I have no problem with it – as long as they don’t try to prevent me from being Rocky Shades Wrathchild.”
We get the feeling the war is far from over!
