Pixies didn’t tell me why I was fired
Kim Shattuck says the Pixies didn’t tell her why they fired her just four months after signing up to replace Kim Deal.
Bassist Shattuck was brought on board after co-founder Deal announced her departure in June, with management saying she’d “just had enough.” But the position only lasted until the end of a UK tour, after which the Pixies announced Paz Lenchantin as their third bassist of 2013.
Now Shattuck tells Jonah Raydio: “They didn’t tell me why or anything – although I had some inkling why. I don’t know whether I’m ready to say or not, but it wasn’t to do with me as much as you’d think.”
One thing she does say is that she doesn’t blame frontman Black Francis: “I’m not so mad at him – he’s not the problem,” she states.
Her experience with the band’s manager was less pleasant. “He kept trying to make me really nervous,” she claims. “He did it to me before the iTunes Roundhouse gig. He goes into my face and goes, ‘Kim, I just wanted you to know that there are gonna be billions of people watching you live, and you need to be perfect.’ I laughed – I’m like, ‘Well good thing for me that I never get nervous.’”
She alleges the manager said the same thing to guitarist Joey Santiago.
NME reports that Francis refuses to be drawn on the issue, saying: “The big question is, if it was going so well, why are you changing it up again? I guess it’s a fair question – but what I would say is, just because some shows went well or a recording session went well, that doesn’t mean that now you guys are married and this is forever.
“It’s not really how it works when you’re a band; and it’s hard to explain to people, especially if they get emotionally attached to one person.”
