Following Classic Rock’s exclusive news that both Paul Rodgers and Billy Idol were sounded out by guitarist Joe Perry to be Aerosmith’s new singer, we can reveal the name of another star who Perry believed could replace Steven Tyler: Chris Cornell.

A source close to the Aerosmith camp tells Classic Rock:

“Joe approached Chris Cornell and asked him if he would be interested in the Aerosmith job, because the band were running out of patience with Steven.

“But Cornell, to his credit, didn’t take Joe’s request very seriously. He thought he was joking and was surprised when Joe said he wasn’t.

“In fact, I overheard Cornell telling Joe: ‘Fuck off, can you imagine how ridiculous that would be?!’

“In any case, Cornell told Joe he was committed to Soundgarden’s reunion, so it [Cornell joining Aerosmith] could never happen.”

If you missed our previous stories about Joe Perry’s ongoing hunt for a new Aerosmith singer, you can read about Paul Rodgers here and Billy Idol here.

The March issue of Classic Rock, which goes on sale next Wednesday, February 3, features Joe Perry on the cover and contains more exclusive Aero-revelations.

Its gets worse

this can only work if they change their name.
Aerosmith without Tyler wont work. End of.

I can make myself available. The reunion of my imaginary band is on the point of collapse. Too much baggage, too many egos.

Plus ca change.

My offer still stands !

I received the latest CR issue in the post this morning and it includes a free copy of Joe Perry’s solo CD release “Have Guitar, Will Travel”. Rushed upstairs and played said CD with high expectations as he will be supporting Bad Company on their forthcoming tour.

I have learned a few things today: -

a) That Steven Tyler was so important to Aerosmith and so is a new vocalist to replace him. Why – Joe Perry simply can’t sing. Think Iggy Pop wrestling on the bog with consipation.

b) CR are giving this CD away for free with this month’s issue. Why – I certainly wouldn’t want to pay for it, or actually play it again. I would score it 3/10 being generous.

c) I won’t be in a rush to take my seat at the Bad Company gig. Why – all of the above.

I really expected much more than this from Joe.

Nice one Chris. Maybe this will wake Joe Perry up. I used to think Joe was mega cool in the late ’70s/early ’80’s but he’s coming across as a money grabbing prick. Is he pissed off because Aerosmith survived a couple of years without him, so he thinks it can survive without Tyler? Do your solo stuff and just wait for Tyler to sort himself out.

It’s not Aerosmith otherwise.

glad cornell told perry to fuck off. everybody knows how stupid the idea of replacing tyler is. TYLER IS AEROSMITH>>

Huh, another “source close to the band” – if true, why doesn’t Joe Perry say so himself.

Will somebody please give Joe Perry Patrick’s number…

Look at the attendance of Joe’s solo shows. Here in Orlando at the House of Blues, barely 300 showed up, making that hall look empty. He talks about needing to tour in celebration of their 40th anniversary, but doing it without Tyler wont draw a crowd at all. He says they toured without Hamilton when he was ill, and without Whitford during his illness, but with respect, they are not Tyler.

Remember INXS trying to replace Hutchence? Same deal.

A Soundgarden reunion is much more appealing than an Aerosmith without Tyler. Way to go, Chris.

Keep digging, Joe. Steve’s the captain – not you…

Agree with all of the above – it is an absolute farce to replace Steven Tyler. I am actually listening to them now (Live Bootleg) and the idea that someone else can do what Steven does is ridiculous. Billy ******* Idol – do me favour! Don’t know who the other bloke is but who gives a shit – no-one can replace Steven in Aerosmith just as no-one could replace Percy in Led Zeppelin when all that waffle started last year. Perhaps Joe is just spinning it to keep Aerosmith in the news while Steven gets sorted out.
Let him come back, do a farewell tour (including a proper UK one – not a ponce about in the park) and then call it day. At least the Scorpions have done it with some class this week.

Aerosmith is done. Rename yourselves and move on, or call yourselves a cover band. This band is now in memory. Look at the history of groups who have done this.”IT DON’T WORK!”

OMG! Thank God everyone agrees with me on this. I mean, come on!! Steven Tyler IS Aerosmith. I have respect for the talent of the other 4. And Joe Perry is definitely one of the greatest guitar players ever…..but not so much as a singer. But, to “replace” ST and still call it Aerosmith would a complete travesty!!

Stevie boy

Totally agree with Davehope.

Dave Allshouse

Patrick….could you manage to do the Aerosmith gig as well as Zeppelin and Bad Company? You’re awesome.

Seriously! Seriously?

This would be as much of a joke as it is with Journey trying to replace Steve “the voice” Perry!

replacing cornell for the great Steven is like replacing quality wine for drain water

or replacing an elephant’s trunk with a pig tail

isb 7015

doing 2 many ballards over the years has took it,s toll on the band. they are fast turning into a joke!

Not to dis-credit Chris Cornell at all, since he has one of the greatest voices going for Rock music right now. Aerosmith trying to replace Steven Tyler would end up in a circus atmosphere disaster no matter who they got. Steven Tyler and Joe Perry have created a unique sound that has been fingerprinted. If Joe Perry wants to get another singer, it would be a better idea for the members of Aerosmith to start a new band with a different name.

aerosmith shot their bolt years ago and have been runnin on fresh air for a while.Should rap it and start again tyler aint the greatest singer but perry makes subo sound like a safe bet.Saw them at the secc in glasgow and they were crap just jack it in.

chris cornell has his own world and he will never be Aerosmith.

ricardo

chris cornell would never entertain aerosmith hes too adventourous and wants to try different things plus soundgarden is his bag not cock rock like aerosmith if you are stuck in the 80s and into hair bands ie motley ratt poison etc then the smiths are for you there is better and more relevant bands to listen too so aerosmith r.i.p

soundgarden already r.i.p. long ago.
Aerosmith rules

ricardo

watch them go next year the boys are back plenty room for the smiths and soundgarden just different styles pity both their lead singers are egomaniacs perhaps they should both move on instead of trying to recapture their past only time and the fickle music public will tell cos there are plenty of bands waiting to fill the gap that they will eventually leave

grunge singers suck. enough said

ricardo

aerosmith dudes need to venture out a bit more its 2010 not the 70s they and their music are over the hill just listened to the perry cd christ what a racket surprised theres still a market for this crap about time smiths fans kicked off the platties and got rid of the flares saying that most of them must be due to pick up their bus passes no future for them considering their best song was an amalgamation with a couple of rappers walk this way right enough with the zimmer frame in tow but hey whatever jerks your chain

music of Aerosmith is timelss ..unlike gringe or that shit called rap..or is it actually supposed to be called crap??

music of Aerosmith is timelss ..unlike grunge or that shit called rap..or is it actually supposed to be called crap??

ricardo

think you meant tuneless and grunge aint too bad in moderation prefer a bit of prog rock myself so gonna put aerosmith to bed but hey been good to spar with shadiq with fans like you the smiths will be ok long as tyler sorts himself out and they recapture their old passion but on a scale of 10 how many rockers really care only time will tell story goes tyler is back on the drugs if true the smiths are done for so perhaps they should close the book and move on but dont rate perry on his own and they dont want to turn into a greatest hits touring band

ricardo

just saw ian hunters tour dates a wee bit dissapointed he aint playing glasgow cos he always does and he has a loyal fan base here perhaps he thinks he will get a more upmarket crowd in edinburgh but he should remember who supported him in the lean times when he wasn,t as popular as he seems to be now but the guy is a legend after all and worth the train fare saying that the hmv is bigger than most of the places he played in glasgow in the past years so might lose a bit of atmosphere but were still here for his next outing whenever that might be
