New Device: ‘This Has Been An Amazing Year’
New Device – who are signed to Classic Rock’s own Powerage label – are about to end the most exciting year in their burgeoning career with a massive touring explosion.
The young London band will be doing their own shows, as well as supporting both Gun and Europe. A dream come true for lead guitarist Phil Kinman.
“It’s been an amazing year for us. One that’s surpassed everything we hoped to achieve. To get our debut album, Takin’ Over, out through Powerage was fantastic for us, and now we’re getting the chance to do some serious touring.”
The quintet – Kinman, vocalist Daniel Leigh, rhythm guitarist Robb Wybrow, bassist Andy Saxton and drummer Rozzy Ison – are currently undergoing an intensive rehearsal period, ready for the challenges ahead.
“When you support a band like Gun, who’ve got so much experience, then you have to be on top of your game,” says Kinman. “Nothing less will do.
“We’re also opening for Europe at the Relentless Garage in London on November [the first in a week-long series of special Classic Rock Awards gigs], and again if you’re not at your best then you’ll be show up by such an excellent band.”
Don’t expect any new songs to be tried out during these shows.
“We’ve got 12 tracks on the album, and will probably only get to do six or seven. So, there’s plenty to choose from. We have also been doing a version of Guns N’ Roses’ You Could Be Mine – but only when we’ve been headlining.”
New Device have set aside the first part of 2010 for songwriting.
“We want to get a head-start for the next record, so that we can really hone things done and get everything really worked out. We actually began writing the songs for Takin’ Over in 2007, even though it took until this year for them to come out. I doubt we’ll get that long for the next record, but we all feel this is going to be very important, and it’s no good rushing things.”
