The 50 Greatest Singers In Rock
We’re talking about singers – no screamers, no screechers, no foghorn-voiced frontmen. Over 20 pages we look at the best rock singers ever to have drawn breath and then let it out to such stunning effect. Including in-depth looks at…
Chris Robinson
The Black Crowes man is “a great singer, a fine, fine singer,” according to Robert Plant.
David Coverdale
With Deep Purple, Whitesnake and Jimmy Page, ‘Old Cov’ has deservedly earned himself a reputation as one of the greats.
Noddy Holder
The Slade legend might not have the sweetest-sounding voice in rock, but boy can this guy sing!
The Greatest Of All. Numero uno. The cherry on the cake. The fairy on the Christmas tree. Is it Plant? Rodgers? Gillan? Dickinson?
Plus…
This month’s DVD: Voices Of Rock – 85 minutes of great performance footage featuring Dio, The Who, Rush, The Doors, The Black Crowes, Deep Purple, Procol Harum and more…
Elsewhere in the May issue of Classic Rock…
Journey
It’s 1981. Neal Schon is not gay, Steve Perry may or may not ‘sing like a duck’ – and there are sumo wrestlers in town…
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Southern pride, indignation, guitar solos that came in a dream, and the rest of the story behind Sweet Home Alabama.
All this and much more, plus the biggest rock reviews section on the planet, this month with new albums from The Parlor Mob, Neil Young, Ian Gillan and more; reissues from Sabbath, The Damned; new DVDs.
And if you take out a subscription to Classic Rock from this issue, you get a copy of the 3-CD Bruce Springsteen Live 1975-1958, and also save money into the bargain.

Didn’t know the Boss did a live album in ‘58.
: )
I hope Steve Marriott is in that top singers list.
Listen to ‘All My Lovin’ by the Small Faces to see how Robert Plant stole everything he needed for ‘Whole Lotta Love.
Naughty Robert
Call me pedantic if you like, but what happened to numbers 31-50? What a let down!
But what I can’t get my head around is how come the following don’t make it:
Corey Glover (Living Colour)
Dug Pinnick (King’s X)
Johnette Napolitano (Concrete Blonde)
Angelo Moore (Fishbone)
exceptional vocalists one and all, and that was the criteria………
How come there’s only 30 singers in the top 50? Am I missing something???
I read the list, and agreed mainly with your selections, and despite not being a huge fan of Queen, I think Freddie Mercury is a brilliant choice as number one.
However, I can’t understand leaving out Axl Rose? Yes, the guy is a complete arse, and his days as being the in-your-face rockstar are over, turning into the “i’ll-sue-you” fashion that seems to suit modern day rockers. Despite all that, he has (or had) one hell of a voice on him. A brilliant range (his slow melody on Patience to his screeching powerhouse on Night Train). I think he should have been on the list?
And also, Dave Grohl? He’s pretty good too…
If Ronnie Dio’s not in the top 5 I may have to start buying Kerrang!
Interesting list as ever. While no surprises was great to see Robin Zander make it. The guy has an immense voice and it’s not mean feat projecting over the wall of sound that CT can create. Seeing Ann Wilson and a mention for Pat Benatar just added some depth.
And the beloved Mogg, hugely underestimated voice and lyricist.
Axl Rose not in a list of the top 50 (30) vocalists of all time? Who compiles this rubbish!
I’d agree with a lot of the list, and think he should be there in the top 5 or 10, but to leave him out completely? Lunacy!
Where’s Axl? Where’s Eddie Vedder?Also, where are numbers 31-50?
I’m gettting fed up with CR. Every month there’s cock-ups in it and missing out 20 of the top 50 in a poll takes the biscuit. What do the editors actually do? Precious little editing done by any of the 9 of them.
Utter rubbish.
have a heart. where’s axl rose?
I’m sure the years of hard rock, booze, and who knows what else have taken their toll on the editors (just as it has me and my mates), but even I can still count to 50. What happened to 31 – 50 guys? No Bruce Dickinson is unforgivable. He’s clearly top 10, and is getting better with age. Looking forward to checking out some of those I’ve missed over the years.
My three favourite singers of all time didn’t get on the main list, where James Hetfield, one of my worst, did!
Where were:
Bon Scott? A showman he may have been, but one with an incredible voice.
Axl Rose? Yes, no one else can do ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ … which is exactly why he should’ve been on there, among other numerous reasons!
And my personal favourite … the AIR RAID SIREN that is BRUCE DICKINSON! Come on, man … i’ve never seen a bloke older than my Dad hit notes like that before. Strong vocals, amazing range, and, although it’s not relevant to his voice, he’s also bloody good looking! He definitely deserved a place.
Top 50/30 rock singers erm! I would agree with numero 1 and 2, Daltery,Dio and Gillan behind Plant i’m sorry i’ve listened to rock music for over 40 years and the 3 aforementioned singers are all better than Percy. And Danny Bowes not even in the top 20 let alone the the top 10…well whats going on there???
Can i ask where is Bruce Dickinson,Rob Halford or even Ian Anderson?
I’m pleased Axl wasn’t in your top 30, he is been learning to sing properly for the last 14 years.
where is 50-31? and what about axl rose, bon scott, bruce dickinson, rob halford!
The Case for John Fogerty M’lud
My learned friends have laid out their case for the top 50 (or was it 30?) Rock Singers, and speaking for the defence, we have to say that the Top 3 are fairly and squarely beyond reproach and probably could not be bettered or seriously improved upon. However, as with all lists and their inherent subjectivity, there is often a bigger story being told by what is let off the list than what appears on it. A list of rock singers without the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Joe Cocker and John Fogerty, yet that includes Brian Connolly? – a list that talks of excluding “Vocal stylists” such as Bob Dylan and David Bowie (?), yet includes Bryan Ferry, has got to leave itself subject to certain degree of criticism.
The case shall be that of all the many omissions and questionable inclusions, one omission stands head and shoulders in our opinion, that of John Fogerty. A man, and whose former group, whilst being widely respected these days, probably has the blameless guilt of perhaps being a little too American and never really classed as cool. Yet Fogerty, is a man who is still performing riotous sets around the world at the age of 60, stole the limelight at Glastonbury two years ago, won a Rock Album Grammy in his 50’s, and is still producing top quality new material. His instantly identifiable voice continues to deliver live as well as ever, and his energy is undiminished. Add to that his versatile guitar playing, his classic song-writing ability and multi-instrumentalism, and you have the truely complete rock package. Song-writing that meanst with CCR alone he wrote enough quality songs to fill a 40 song dual Chronicle compilation and not a bum song on them, name me another artist close to that, in the space of 3 years.
But let’s concentrate on Fogerty the vocal performer however, and the views of his peers, where at least 2 of your interviewers, Paul Carrack and Ian Gillam, names him as one of their all time favourites. But you could also cite Bruce Springsteen, U2, Dave Edmunds, Status Quo and many others as witnesses. He can write and deliver the lot in rock terms, from wistful ballad “Wrote A Song For Everyone”, classic, apocalyptic rock “Bad Moon Rising”, “Effigy”, love songs “Joy of My Life”, 60’s protest “Who’ll Stop The Rain”, country, rock ‘n’ roll, rockabilly, heavy rock, not to mention his many storming covers such as soul classics, “99 and a Half”, “Susie Q”, “I Put A Spell on You”, “Heard It Thru The Grapevine”, plus rockabilly, “My Baby Left Me”, Ooby Dooby”, rock n roll “ Good Golly Miss Molly”……
To conclude, I leave you with two stand-out studio vocal performances that I defy you to better in terms of power, delivery and sheer integrity. The first one, Kenny Aronoff picked up on as sounding like The Hulk rising from the swamp and given voice, namely “Born On The Bayou”. The second is probably one of the best of a number of protest songs from the Vietnam era, and delivered at relentless pace, “Fortunate Son”. Put those on the sound system then play the Sweet, and even many tracks by most of your Top 10, and maybe, just maybe, a sense of injustice might creep in to your minds. I rest the case for the defence m’lud.
No mention of Maggie Bell the finest female singer these shores have ever produced.
The 30 top 50 singers of all time? Hmmmm.
Not a mention anywhere of Brian Johnson. Past his best these days I know but put on your headphones and LISTEN to Back in Black beginning to end. The power and range beggars belief. NO ONE could have sung those songs like he did including Bon (and I’m as big a Bon fan as the next guy) Polls… they’re bo****ks.
Agree completely with Dio being near the very top, and I can’t believe Bruce Dickinson was left out. But what drug-crazed halfwit included Paul Stanley !?!
Has anybody received an answer about where the missing 20 singers are from the Top 50??
A schoolboy cock-up, can’t believe not one of the many editors has actually checked their magazine before sending it to print. Chumps !!!
Also it’s been said before but…where is Bruce Dickinson on the list !! How the hell is Paul Stanley a better vocalist than Bruce??!!
It’s all about opinion I suppose, but clearly some people’s opinion’s are wrong !!
Um….Rob Halford anyone? Hello?
The man’s rep is as one of the greatest vocalists of all time. Multi-octave range, a style all his own, an influence to countless hard rock/metal singers… and no showing in the Top 30? Blasphemy.
I have no issue with Mercury topping the list, but Halford should be near the upper tier.
At least you put Dio and Zander on the list. Nice to see Stanley on there too. (Not a very flattering photo of the man though)
Will you be posting 31-50 anytime soon?
I see my Roger made #13! Lucky him! <3
Plant is ungodly overrated and should never be ahead of Daltrey on any list when it comes to Rock and Roll singers. A disgrace
I think Plant and Daltrey are comparable at their respective bests, but Plant’s worst stuff is much worse than Daltrey has ever sounded. Plant can sound downright awful, sometimes. Daltrey never does. He’s a much more consistently excellent singer. I haven’t seen the list, but, reading the comments, I agree that omitting John Fogerty is quite a mistake. That guy’s voice IS rock ‘n’ roll.
Where was the missing 20 anyone ?
Where Was Alice Cooper ?
just bought it over in australia, has anyone found out anything about singers 31-50? I can’t believe they would make that kind of mistake…
