Metallica Salute Michael Jackson and Queen
Another day another Michael Jackson story. This time it’s metal’s biggest band, Metallica, covering Jacko and classic rockers Queen.
Upon coming out for their encore at Sonisphere in Germany the band broke into Eddie Van Halen’s famous riff from Jacko’s hit ‘Beat It’, which frontman James Hetfield claimed was guitarist Kirk Hamett’s main influence.

Next James said: “OK, here’s a part where we play a song that’s inspired us to play music from a band that we grew up listening to. Tonight, the chosen band is Queen.” The band then burst into Stone Cold Crazy.
Metallica’s love for Queen led them to cover the same song for compilation album Rubaiyat in 1990. The recording appeared as a b-side to their legendary single, Enter Sandman and later on their Garage Inc album in 1998.
The band also recently started selling the first ever Cliff Burton biography.
Our suggestions for other unlikely Metallica covers for their forthcoming slot at Sonisphere UK are, ‘Wuthering Heights’ by Kate Bush, Chic’s ‘Le Freak’ and ‘You Sexy Thing’ by Hot Chocolate. So if you’re reading James, get it sorted!

You do know EVH didn’t play or write the riff to Beat it? Played by Steve Lukather. Van Halen just (!) played the solo.
Just a little nitpickin’… Eddie Van Halen didn’t play the “Beat It”-riff, just the solo. Steve Lukather played the riff.
Get your facts right!!
Steve Lukather played guitar on “Beat It” – EVH only did the solo.
Loved the crowd response to beat it,deathly silence!!! Now metallica have finally totally sold out
they first played Beat It at an MTV award show.
Well thank God AC/DC did not and surely will never be a part of this. Someone died, much more important people have died and will….so why is it so fucking cool for a band like Metallica to play any tribute shit? Obviously cause they did sell out.
AC/DC I SALUTE YOU AND THANK YOU FOR BEING SO FUCKING SIMPLE SINCE EVER.
“Another day another Michael Jackson story”. Only because you are reporting it. If you are that bored with the story, (and I certainly am), stop going on about it and concentrate on the rock.
Personally, it makes no difference to me whether he is dead or alive. He has no relevance to the music I like and, in fact, during my formative years I considered him one of “the enemy”. Frankly, I couldn’t give a monkey’s that he is dead. Somehow I don’t think I am the only one.
metallica played stone cold crazy at sonisphere holland aswell
hope they play it at knebworth
@Bay
As Jason once said. “Yes Metallica have sold out…every seat of every show everytime we play.”
These guys really have lost it haven’t they? I can’t believe that this is the same band that I went to see in 1986 and who were so cutting-edge and innovative.
They’re embarrassing now!
Michael Jackson was irrelevant to most music fans then and he still is. He is still? Yep, no movement there…
Metallica sold out after the Black album
Metallica rules! I don’t care what they do, I’m a fan, have been a fan since kill ‘em all. Love most of what they have done…what I least liked was S and M…. love Load, and Reload… and even St. Anger ( but the DVD rocks with Trujillo on bass )… saw them twice in the past few days… Sonisphere in Barcelona and Metallica show in Madrid…
Anyway, just because someone plays a cool riff from an MJ song… which it is… how does that make them a sell out…. that’s a great f’in tune Beat It…. and the guitars rock… I remember in the 80’s growing up, in NYC, it actually made a difference to us metalheads that EVH had played a solo on an MJ record. But I had been a fan of the jackson five as a kid and think Off the Wall is one of the best pop albums ever made…. Doesn’t make me any less of a Metallica or metal fan… music is music …… celebrity bullshit stories,,…that’s something else
Dear Metallica
A few points:
1. Remember the warnings for kids at the end of Batman cartoons during the 1970s? In a similar fashion – “Queen are real musicians, you are not – so do not try to emulate them.”
2. Sky Saxon of US psych group The Seeds died on the same day as Michael Jackson. Since The Seeds music owes more to what you are doing today than MJ, where was your tribute to The Seeds? Oh, sorry, I forgot – doing a tribute to The Seeds wouldn’t have got you as much publicity…
3. I saw AC/DC at Wembley Stadium the day MJ died and there was no tribute to MJ – probably because MJ’s music,. whilst very popular the world over, has no relevance to rock music. Oh, and because AC/DC just got on stage and ***PLAYED*** rather than using the gig as a publicity stunt.
So please go away & take that loud-mouthed twat of a drummer off with you. The vast majority of rock fans are NOT beligerent teenagers and we don’t give a stuff about your “music”.
A few points:
1. If you can’t find the raw talent in Metallica, you suck.
2. If you have no appreciattion for longevity, recovery, and tenacity like Metallica you suck.
3. From and American who loves Metallica, YOU suck.
4. Thank goodness Metallica is from the US and not Britain or they would be a bunch of sissies, which they are neither.
