Manics take on English Defence League
The Manic Street Preachers have threatened legal action against the English Defence League after the fascist political party used their track If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next.
The EDL used the song in an advert designed to promote an upcoming demonstration in Birmingham.
And the Manics were “horrified” to discover what the far-right organisation had done – particularly since the 1998 track is based on an anti-fascist argument used during the Spanish Civil War.
The advert was flagged by Michael Wongsam of West Midlands Unite Against Fascism, who said: “We are appalled to discover that the racist and fascist English Defence League has used the anti-fascist song.”
Weyman Bennett of Unite Against Fascism commented: “The Manic Street Preachers have been dedicated anti-fascists and anti-racists all their lives. It’s ironic that the EDL are using an anti-fascist song to actually encourage fascism. They are taking what is a struggle for equality and trying to turn it into something about division.”
The Manics, who recently released 11th studio album Rewind The Film, embark on a short tour of the UK in September:
Sep 13: Newport Centre
Sep 20: Dublin Olympia
Sep 23: Bristol Colston Hall
Sep 24: London Shepherds Bush Empire
Sep 27: Manchester Ritz
Sep 29: Glasgow Barrowland
