Lips: “Bring Me Your Dildos!”
Anvil man makes plea for sex-toy bombardment at Download.
Classic Rock’s Geoff Barton just conducted a quickfire interview with Anvil guitarist/vocalist Lips, ahead of the band’s appearance at the Download Festival tomorrow. Highlights follow:
Are you looking forward to playing Download? Did you ever believe you would play a show of that size in the UK again?
I always hoped to, ha-ha! I always hoped to, let’s put it that way, you know? I’m looking forward to it like you wouldn’t believe, man. But it’s going to be different. I think this time it’s going to be slightly different than it was in 1982 or 1983. I don’t think that I felt like I owned the stage like I do know; there’s a different feeling within my soul. I can tell you that it’s going to be better for sure than anything you remember from those days, that’s all.
Will you be playing Mothra, my all-time favourite Anvil track?
If we get encores we will be.
What about the chainsaw and the dildo, will we be seeing them again?
Well, not the chainsaw. As far as the dildo is concerned… well, I used the microphone the other night. I’m waiting for some young lady to bring me her own personal one.
If I get a plea up on the Classic Rock website, maybe you’ll get a few of them thrown on stage at Download.
That’s right, but it’s gotta be used, man!
Now that Anvil are back in the spotlight, do you plan to take this to the limit now, or are you just grabbing the limelight while you can?
I’ve always wanted to take it to the limit. I’m going to enjoy myself, that’s the best I can tell you. And appreciate every second. Certainly on a completely different perspective as a guy who’s 53 years old compared to a guy who’s 23. I’ve been there and I’ve a much deeper understanding of what’s important in life, and how precious each moment is. I’m going to live it to the extreme.
What about some new music from Anvil?
Oh, absolutely. We’ve finished writing our new stuff. The next album will be called Juggernaut Of Justice – yet another alliteration title, I know you love that. It’s really sparked up. Because of all the positivity that’s around the band, and that’s been around the band for the last couple of years, we’ve got double the amount of songs that we need, man. We’ve got to start weeding it out, that’s the problem.
When will the album be released?
We’re more than ready. It’s just a question of exactly what the timing of it is, how it’s getting paid for, who’s paying for it, where we’re recording it, who’s producing… just minor details like that, ha-ha! But there’s lots of stuff brewing. We’ve got the DVD coming out on Monday and we’ve got a couple of shows coming up with AC/DC, which is a really big deal. Two massive baseball stadiums in the US.
That was by AC/DC’s request as well, wasn’t it?
Yeah, I believe so. What an incredible honour, man.
* Anvil! The Story Of Anvil is available to buy on DVD and Blu-ray on Monday, June 15.
