Thin Lizzy have parted company with guitarist/vocalist John Sykes.

Thin Lizzy guitarist and mainstay, Scott Gorham, has issued the following statement:

“It’s been a very tough time of late for myself and the band, firstly with drummer Tommy Aldridge’s injury and now the subsequent decision for John and the rest of the group to go their separate ways.

“I can only apologise to everyone who has supported us over the years, but we will be back up to full speed soon.”

Scott Gorham intends to announce future plans for Thin Lizzy shortly. All Thin Lizzy shows confirmed for 2009 will be cancelled or postponed until further notice.

What?? Are they going to carry on as Thin Lizzy with only ONE musician who played with Phil? This is all perplexing stuff!

Really? He’s leaving Thin Lizzy? Are you sure? Because I thought Phil Lynott died a long time ago.

Shame if this was to prove to be the end of the whole Lizzy live legacy. It was always fair, IMHO, that Scott wanted to take the Lizzy music out on the road (especially up to and including the seminal Live & Dangerous stuff) to the masses and fair play to him for doing that. Sykes played in one incarnation of Lizzy which I could take or leave – it always was and still is the era-defining Live and Dangerous line-up that counted most. The music from that era is so iconic and deserves to live on via the live shows – give Limehouse Lizzy their dues, they’re doing a great job carrying the flag.

I first saw Lizzy at the Antrim Forum in ‘77 (or was ‘78 ?) – my first big show as a newbie 14-year-old rocker and the memories of it are still embedded in my mind as an unbelievable experience.

For all the cynics out there – yes, Lizzy was always Phil’s band, but spare a thought for Scott – he’s damned if he doesn’t and damned if he does with continuing the Lizzy legacy – he won’t keep everyone happy, no matter what he does.

Just a thought: Scott … is there any chance of getting back together with Robbo and BD now or has that boat sailed for good now ?

Footnote: Scott, loved all your 21 Guns stuff – you could always resurrect that project if continuing with the Lizzy stuff proves to be more trouble than it’s worth. Please ignore the cynics – their comments don’t reflect the consensus of opinion of true Lizzy fans who see the music as the enduring legacy – and I mean that with all the respect in the world to Phil’s memory.

Brian Robertson or Gary Moore would be suitable replacements.

Scott should follow the example of Heaven and Hell and name the band after a Thin Lizzy song or album. Maybe then Gary, Robbo and Brian Downey would be interested to rejoin the band. It’s great Scott want to keep the Lizzy legacy alive but he should do so under a different name.

Sykes can now rejoin his ‘old pal’ Cov and/or do a Blue Murder reunion. Maybe even do a Tygers of Pan Tang reunion. Anyone seen John Deverill lately?

I’m sorry, how can this be classed as Thin Lizzy anymore. Only one member of the real Thin Lizzy is actually there. Poor ol Scott must be scratching his head as much as I am.

That’s a shame, in the absence of Phil this was a great line up and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing them a couple of years ago, was disappointed when they had to cancel Wembley last week.

I will continue to support Scott if he seeks replacements and carries on with the Thin Lizzy name.
After all, one member is better than none, my favourite band was/is The Ramones, what chance do i have of seeing any our their shows?
Cherish what you have and not what is gone!

Well what can I say, i’m a little disappointed, I mean Lizzy were my favourite band and I have been going to see them every christmas since they started touring the name again, ok the vocals were never brilliant but the music was still great, to be honest their set at hard rock hell looked a little tired, but the previous years hammersmith show was fantastic

I was actually going to see these again at both sonisphere and as support to ac/dc but oh well hope to see them back in the near future, bring gary moore into the mix again, I saw him in hammersmith a couple of months ago and he’s definately still got it, his presence would make lizzy the best they have been since lynott passed away, and I would fight my way to the front to see that regardless of what it cost

Anyways good luck sykes with whatever it is you choose to do next, also good luck to gorham, if anything he was outplaying sykes on the two recent tours i’ve seen and was getting the bum end of the deal with regards to how loud his guitar was over sykes which was a shame

derek lee smith

that wud explain why they didnt support ACDC last neet then……

It would be great to get Gary Moore and Brian Downey into the lineup but I believe that Downey said that he didnt want to have anything to do with the new lineup and that he wanted to finish it up after the concert for Philo a few years ago.

Who would play bass though? Keep the existing bassist?

stevie dee

if you think this is bad take a look at the current line up of doctor feelgood. not one single original member.

get robbo and downey back, get the singer from limehouse sorted simple as that or maybe scotts clocked someone already to do the vocals time will tell the rest of them were only doing it while whitesnake off road this body of work needs to be heard keep the faith

timmratt

Agree with German the Herman, how bout em both ?? One BIG ? though – who the hell is going to sing & no I don’t mean Gary….

Soul Mover

No Phil, no Lizzy you daft buggers…..shame,shame and utterly shame!!!!!!!

long time lizzy fan

The reason for me to go and see Lizzy of late was Scott Gorham and as many original members there were. Still hoping for a Brian Downey, Gary Moore, Brian Robertson and Darren Wharton re-union gig or tour. It would be great if everyone was in on this one – Snowy White, Eric Bell, John Sykes.

Cut the shit out its not Thin Lizzy and never will be again without Phill

should of never been touring as thin lizzy. no phil, no brian downey. i cant even believe people would pay to see this.

having seen this”band” a few times over the years and beeen privileged to see a certain Phill Lynott play in a band with this name a a few times as well ,i came to a conclusion that thin lizzt stopped playing music at hammersmith when lynoot pulled the plug!!!
want to see a copy of this band , go to a limehouse lzzy gig takes you back to damp winter(late 70s) evenings waiting for an albli

They never play in US anyway so dosn’t bother me one way or another. Am a big fan of Scott.Robo and Gary.

I saw the recent lizzy and they were truley terrible.. speed metal fizzy solo’s complete gawk on bass and drummer who ploughed through eveything like phil taylor.. the support act diamond head showed how to move on without wrecking yer reputation. good luck scott… you will need it!! ps join limehouse.. best thing since lizzy!

About bloody time………..Now we can have Blue Murder

As a Sykes fan……..My twopenneth is this …..Sykes never was the soul of Lizzy, and never will be; Sykes has much material that needs to be aired, to old and new fans…And frankly, he should look to himself before announcing COV` needs a `kick up the backside`,and `(Thrashing) with a les paul`..Heal thy self, FREE thyself.
`Limehouse are better `at lizzy` than you..`leave Tribute status alone….With due respect to others you`re nearly 50 let`s hear the real Sykes sound again
My credit card is burning..for that day
Get on with it………………

to people saying why would people pay to see this? i’m 17 so obviously and unfortunately i’ve never seen them with phil,so of course i go to the new thiin lizzy concerts,i would love if they got robbo or brian downey back, but i don’t think that’s likely

Joseph Cuddy

Tell Scott to get Robbo ,Downey and the guy from the THIN AS LIZZY tribute band, that way they will resemble THIN LIZZY.
John is an outstanding guitarist but in my opinion he was far too heavy for THIN LIZZY,
JOE CUDDY

Thank god I say. Touring under the Lizzy name without Phil is just ridiculous. Any band that doesn’t have the original singer is never going to work. And Phil was the very heart of the band.
The statue opening tribute gig with Moore and Downey was brilliant and tastefully done – and they were smart enough to do it as a one-off.
Plus Sykes was a one album Lizzy member, not from the great period of the late 70s. Yes he can play guitar, but he plays like a twiddly metal wanker. Boring and doesn’t do the songs justice.
And for those who were too young to see the original Lizzy (like myself) – so what? Just watch the dvds or videos on Youtube – at least there’s that. I’d rather blast out the Live & Dangerous dvd anyday than see some second rate Lizzy.
By the way, I read that Scott is working on remastering the dvd sound of the Sydney Opera House show – awesome, as the current dvd sound sucks.

Only just found out about Sykes leaving, but am not surprised.
The last gig in Manchester was terrible and it was clear that they were just going through the motions.

I saw Lizzy three times with Phil and loads of times since. The Gorham, Sykes, Mendoza, Lee (RIP) line up was bril and put on some excellent shows, but the last tour was a tour too far.

Scott needs to get Robertson or Moore in and get rid of the new bassist or I certainly won’t be bothering again.

Another thumbs up for Limehouse as well, awesome!
