Joe Perry: ‘Tyler’s Still In Aerosmith’
Joe Perry has exclusively told Classic Rock that Steven Tyler will remain a member of Aerosmith, even though another singer is being brought in.
The guitarist now says of the situation:
“Steven hasn’t quit the band, nor have we sacked him. We’re taking the attitude that he’s going on a vacation from Aerosmith. While he’s away working on other projects, the rest of us (Perry, guitarist Brad Whitford, bassist Tom Hamilton and drummer Joey Kramer) want to carry on playing live. So we will be bring another singer to make this happen.
“We’re not daft enough to think we can replace Steven, and that’s not our plan. But after 40 years of working together we just don’t wanna stop. How long with Steven be away? He says it’ll be two years, but I believe he’ll be back a lot sooner. It may end up that we only do 10 shows with the new person!”
Perry also commented on those singers currently being linked with the Aerosmith slot.
“Every day there appears to be a new name mentioned. All that happens is that someone puts a suggestion on the internet, it’s picked up by others, and within 24 hours that person is the singer we’ve chosen! The reality is that we know a lot of vocalists, and have sounded out some of them as to whether they’d be interested in joining the band. Right now, no-one’s been offered the job.
“The four of us talk all the time on the phone, and we will get down to making the choice after I finish my tour with the Joe Perry Project. As it stands, we are open to all possibilities. We may even choose a female vocalist. Why not? There are some women out there with great voices.”
Aerosmith aim to sort out the situation in the Spring, and get back on the road in the Summer. And Perry hopes the new, temporary line-up will also do some songs the band haven’t done for years.
“All I can say is that this should be a really exciting time for the band. It’s a chance to do something a little different, before Steven returns.”

Yawn!
At least this sounds a bit more sensible than his recent ramblings… Get Hagar in and get to Download!
Finally! Thank goodness a PROPER decision has been made! Hopefully when Tyler returns they’ll make an album like ‘Toys in the Attic’ or ‘Rocks’ again!
This is the best news we’ve heard yet! This does seem the time to strike while the iron is hot though. A break is what they need from each other. Let’s hope when all this is over with that the 5 of them put out a new album with “NEW” material and not all these compilation pieces of crap with only one new track. I would much rather hear a live album if that the case. “Obligation” albums are shit!
halleluyah
making sense after all
Hey guys, I want an audition!
Krissy
Steven, can’t be replaced. Period, end of story on that.
As far as the boyz wanting to still play live, I get it, and appreciate that part.
Fair play to him, I mean if Brucie could leave Maiden and then rejoin them later then surely it could work in a similar way for Aerosmith and Steven Tyler.
Classic Rock is doing a much better job of covering this story than the US press. Keep it coming….
It would be good if they picked some unknown who is trying to get a big break. An idea for a TV talent show, for rock fans.
Better still,, just be quite and work it out without talking to the press every 5 mins
Andrew-that already existsted…”Rock Star: INXS” and “Rock Star: Supernova”.
sorry i love aerosmith but this is just the dullest thing ever, anything joe says is immediately jumped on by classic rock as fact, its ridiculous,if they tour with another singer fine but dont record it wont work, please try and find some other news guys its just repetitve and boring
“Sacked”? “Daft”?
WTF?! You can’t expect me to believe that Joe Perry of Aerosmith used those words in an interview, can you? He’s American! We American’s don’t use those expressions… ever!
Without hearing an actual recording of this “interview” I would sincerely doubt its authenticity. Seems made-up to me.
I was so made up to get my free copy of Joes new album with Classic Rock this month……..Until I put it on. What a pile of sh@t, the production is so bad its embarrassing. And as for Joe’s vocals (he sings lead on about half the album), he sounds like a drunken 60 year old pub singer. You can tell who the real songwriter is in the aerosmith. And to think i’ve bought Bad Company tickets on the basis that he’s supporting them. Is it just me who thinks that these guys are now in their 60s, surely they should be allowed to go out on one last massive bender. As long as they get up and play what difference is it going to make to them now? If they sit at home drinking tea they may get another 5 – 10 years added onto their lives…..but jesus how boring are those last few years going to be.
WOW, HE’S BECOME EVEN STUPIDER THAN NEAL SCHON, I DIDN’T THINK THIS WAS POSSIBLE!
Yeah, I don’t think much of the new Joe perry album either – there’s only a couple of half decent tracks, which Steven could have sung a whole lot better.
imagine you go a Elvis Presley’s concert and you got the news that elvis needs a break and his cousin will be replacing him for the break and singing in the concert.
same silly case here
If only temp why not get one of the best vocalists around in… think of the cover version of cryin…… Jeff Scott Soto……… Now that would be awesome..
Steven,
so proud of you…be good to you…carry on my wayward son-they’ll be peace when you are done…And don’t let the sound of your own wheels make you crazy…Dream on…
Time to call it a day fellas………. I don’t know about everyone else, but I grew up listening to Aero, and the truth is, the only band that has proven to be able to put the BS aside is the rolling stones. Give some respect to your fans dude…….. I wouldn’t pay dime to watch aero with another singer especially a chick. Not being sexist but these dudes, like motley crue made their rep by being a machismo band. Totally ridiculous.
Steven, There are many amongst us(the Aerosmith fans that have loved the tunes/music for what seems like forever) that now not only feel connected to the music, songs but the band..the band who has stood the test of time and still Rocks the house! Having said this I am on strike, regretably not wanting to go to another concert without you as the lead singer….no one can EVER replace or fill the infamous shoes that you have sung in, danced in and rock and rolled us in!This is a sad day for my girlfriends and I…”Pink is our favorite color” and played on every rode trip!We love you!
