It Was 35 Years Ago Today…

David Coverdale remembers when Deep Purple played the California Jam in 1974.

We’re big on anniversaries here at Classic Rock, as we’re sure you know. But it took this missive just received from from Whitesnake’s Sir David Of Coverdale to remind us of this particular cause for celebration…

Take it away, David…

Just a reminder… 35 years ago today the ever so popular Deep Purple played the California Jam at the Ontario Speedway in often sunny California… and if you don’t believe me… check this out… WOO HOO!!!

PS. Another lesser-known fact, we had just been given an advance from Warner Brothers for $1,000,000… and I was asked to… er… ‘stick it in my back pocket’ for safety… I should have made a run for the border!!!

PPS. Another lesser-known fact… a girl called Linda Lovelace was asking to meet the band, but nobody had heard of her at the time, so she wasn’t allowed in our enclosure… Afterwards,  when we boarded the Starship to fly off after the show, we discovered a video on the plane called ‘Deep Throat’…
