Guns N' Roses In Dublin Controversy

Axl Rose was at it again at the O2 Arena in Dublin last night (September 1), when he stormed offstage less than 30 minutes into Guns N’ Roses’ set.

The band went onstage over an hour later than expected, at 10.25pm, to be greeted by a hail of cans and bottles from an angry crowd.

At this point, Axl said to the fans: “Alright, here’s the deal. One more bottle, we go home. It’s up to you. We would like to stay. You want us to stay? We wanna stay. We wanna have some fun. If you don’t wanna have fun, all you gotta do is let us know and we’ve got no problem. We’ll go on our way.”

By 10.50, when more bottles were thrown, Axl took the band offstage. Despite pleas from an official onstage, bottles continued to be thrown, and at 11.10pm, the main lights came up and most of the audience left. However, 15 minutes later, GNR did go back onstage, to finish their set in front of a very small crowd.

Axl Rose is a joke, continually shows no respect for the people who put him where he is and have paid extortionate ticket prices to see him. There is no excuse for habitually coming on stage late and in some cases short-changing the fans when venues pull the plug.

As for the bottle throwing I well remember Donnington in ‘83 when bottles were flying everywhere. A certain Mr Ronnie James Dio, a real rock’n'roller, was hit by one such projectile in the face. He didn’t storm off stage, he acknowledged ‘good shot!’ and carried on with his performance. Dio also made more than a handful of great albums unlike the creatively challenged Rose.

To$$er!

this is borderline bizarre – what excuse now for being late again, I don’t think in the history of rock music any front man as ever truned up so late so often. Surely people are going to not buy tickets for future events with Axl, I mean seriously, why bother?

Skullhammor

Im glad i havent bothered with the Guns n Roses Karaoke tour

uncle mort

Ok here’s the deal, g’n'r are trying to flog ticket’s, don’t buy them, then axl can sleep as long as he wants.

Axl at it again? More like idiotic “fans” at it again. Seriously, why do these people even bother going just to ruin it for those that want to be there? Of course this story doesn’t mention that there was an hour gap between support and main act, which is pretty standard, and “most of the crowd” leaving is a huge exaggeration. Just more negative BS just because it’s Axl. Sure he’s erratic, but it’s the way he is and that’s hardly a secret. Just a minority wrecking it for everyone else.

LOL – its really funny – gives us something to talk about! Whoever was left in the small crowd would have got an initmate gig!

I wasn´t at the gig nor , do I live in Dublin , but I’ve spent the morning reading the Irish papers and RTE reports about this show . Now , for ever comment posted in favour off GnRs ( Axl ! ) there are atleast 7 or 8 that are complaints , this has also been the case from most of GnRs ( Axl ) shows in Europe !!
My own conclusion ( for what it’s worth ) is that this guy has a hugh chip on his shoulder and no longer deserves to be treated with respect , remember that respect works two ways , if you’re supposed to be on stage at 9 / 9:30 they , show up an hour or more late and expect to be treated like heros forget about it !
As for the promoters , you should always be very wary of these shower of fuckwits , it’s your money there after , and they couldn’t care less about the fans , they’ve hiked up the ticket prices and ruined the whole specktacle of going to a concert .
I´m really sorry for those of you who have been caught up in all this shite . I hope there`s no future repeats !

Haywire

Haha, the man is a fecking arsehole. Show some respect and you will be shown the same respect.

i think this is the last time we will axl on these shores – fans and promoters alike are just not accepting this late gig starting nonsense – mind you im still not forgiving them for no scottish dates this time.

Wait for the Axl Bashers.. Why pay £50 plus quid to go and throw stuff at a band ??

Maybe its me as on older gig goer i dont get why you would throw stuff at Guns N Roses knowing that Axl and Co would walk off ??

People wonder why Axl doesnt do anything for years and then when they tour this sort of stuff happens …Axl will always come on when he is ready and he wont change now right or wrong.. Roll on 17.10.10 .. !

Guns were the dogs bolox back in the 80’s & 90’s but thats now long gone.
I was lucky to meet all of them inc Axl backstage at maine road in the early 90’s,slash & duff were wasted, gilby was very quite & matt was in a tent with 3 fit birds.Axl turned up in a large white limo with 4 very large body guards and said a quick hello and that was it.
I had a ticket for Leeds fest but heard they wouldnt show so didnt spend the £40 in petrol to get to the place and what happens they show up.
Cheers AXL you just lost one more long time fan,the only so called fans that come to the show these days are one’s that will try get a reaction from you and it looks like its working at every show.
P.S.AXL You owe me £80. G ‘n’ R R.I.P.

Spot on Mark, you know what is coming when you buy a ticket….if you dont want to risk them coming on at all hours dont go…..simple.

it like going to a strip club and being shocked when there is nudity….possibly!

axl is always late be it this group or proper guns&roses, dont blame him going off if bunch a@seholes throw stuff at you

Mark, I totally agree. Regardless of you view on Axl, everyone knows he’s always late. If you’re buying a ticket for his show expect it. I’d be surprised if he came on time to be honest. If you cannot accept that don’t waste your money. Don’t fraking throw things at the band because they’ll walk right off, screwing the people who wanted to see the show.

Axl Rose was in Guns & Roses these shows are not! they are Axl and hired guns. Go and do yourself a favor and see SLASH for a show the guy gives 110%, not late and is not up his own arshole nor treats his fans like shit.
Please Axl do everyone a favor just FUCK OFF!

Save your money and go and see Cheap Trick this November instead instead of this embarrassing knobcheese.

Andy Simm

Its not Axl I don’t get- I mean the bloke has been a complete twat since even the 80’s- but the people/fans who spend stupid money to see this farce.
Why do YOU go? Why would YOU spend £100 quid to see the Muppets?

I feel sorry for his crew too – their only a few dates into europe and they’ve all already had enough with him. I was on local crew and I’ll tell you it was a tense atmosphere with crowed and crew.
Plus just want to ad, there not really guns n roses shows, their axel’s little project billed as guns n roses. If he were to just bill as himself he wouldn’t sell 5000

Little Steven

To be fair to the bottle throwers, I agree with everyone who said “respect others and you shall be respected yourself”. Clearly its the only thing Axl will respond to…so there is a very, very small chance that one day he’ll get bottled for being late and realise that its not funny anymore. If someone shits on you, you have every right to show them how you feel about that, even if its the kind of behaviour you’ve come to expect. If someone known for violent outbursts punches you in the face, should you just shrug and go “well, it was to be expected”? I doubt it.

disgruntled goat

Andy Simm- I’d pay a hundred quid to go and see The Muppets. There would be loads of amusing banter between Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Fozzie Bear and the gang, and a splendid evening would be had by all.

It’d be a hell of a lot more entertaining than going to see Axl Rose continue to let down the people who put him in a position where he COULD afford to blow 20 million dollars on an album. Starting to think Vince Neil was right about him all along.

Stevo the Greebo

I’ll be glad when this Axl Rose tour is over. I’m sick to fucking death of having to read about the twat on this website.

Almost Famous

I was there. My first time seeing GN’R…and my last. Biggest waste of time and money in my life! Thanks a lot, Axhole and Guns N’ Posers!

Willie Rose

I can’t honestly believe that anyone gives a sh*t about Axl or GNR at this point. They suck!!! They are soooo over! They, or he to be more specific, has been able to drive many many miles riding on fumes. It’s so sad…rock and roll…uh…yeah right…

red rocker 666

Axl is too far up his own solar system to care wether or not he is late to take his hired GNR cohorts to entertain the audience.

it won’t mean people will stop buying tickets as they are to fickle minded.

besides it is axl rose they want to see so ticket sales will stil go thru the roof even if he is an idiot!

donegalannie

i wasn’t at the Dublin gig last night but i was in Belfast the night before & he was late on stage there too, we were told while queueing outside that he’d be on at 9pm, the doors opened at 6.30 & we were in from that time, we weren’t allowed back outside or there’d be no readmission. the support band came on at 7.45 & played til 8.55 now i’ve been to a lot of gigs in the last 18years & i’ve never seen a support band play for an hour & 10mins, they were ok but when you don;t know there stuff & you’re not there to see them then you wouldn’t be bothered. i’m also pregnant, so at 9.20pm when i couldn’t face standing any longer i got moved to a seat & they came on at 9.45 & played til midnight, it’s a late finish over here 7 especially when you have about a 2 1/2hour drive home & you have to rise for work the next morning, i got to bed at 3.30am, but i’m real glad i saw them in Belfast & not Dublin, i mean he blamed his crew for not waking him at the weekend in Reading so what was the excuse in Belfast & Dublin, i’m a huge Guns fan, they were my 1st gig in Slane in1992, but respect deserves respect.

although he did asy when he fifnished the gig in Belfast ‘thanks it was very nice to meet you all’ which i have never heard a frontman say it like that before. anyway there’s not much more you can say, but if you can check out the Ryan Tubridy show on RTE 2fm, he had some audio footage of it this morning & it makes interesting listening.

Axl’s a has-been! He has no respect for the fans who pay to see him. What a twat!

curtis mccraw

Axl is a complete and utter wanker the sooner he fucks off and leaves the metal community and peace the better, this band aint Guns N Roses its Axl twatshanks and hired hands…….TIT!!!

eamonmaiden

I totally agree that you should know to expect Axl to be late onstage. I was at the Belfast gig the night before and fully expected the show to start around 10.30, only to be pleasantly surprised by a 9.45 start. As for his walk off in Dublin, well he did clearly warn the crowd not to throw stuff – it is their own fault he left. True he is unpredictable and a bit of a diva, but the general mood seems to be one of Guns-bashing from the press and now it seems the fans.

I’ve seen G N’ R 3 times in the past and each time they turned up on the dot and played pretty long sets. Does this mark me out as one of a very exclusive club of people? Ho ho… :)

WHY DO PEOPLE KEEP BUYING TICKETS?
Seriously, he has been doing this since the late 80s.
Let this knob go on late to an empty venue – just once.
Pretty confident it would never happen again.

I was at the .. debacle last night.
It was a disgrace. There is a , usually , strict curfew on shows in the O2 arena. They must be over by 23:00 hours. So when people are left wondering when the show will start and its almost 22:30 they are also begining to wonder how much of a show they are likely to see.
Axl finally arrived , after a 4 min intro ! , and hadn’t even done a sound check. The poor techie trying to wire him up got a smack in the head for his troubles.
He was out of time with the band and out of breath by the end of the song.
When the first objects were thrown , they were plastic pint glasses , Axl stopped the show and issued a warning that he would go homehow if any more objects were thrown at him.
He managed to get through 4 songs before the next missile , it looked like a plastic beer bottle complete with beer , was launched.
He just said Good night and walked off.

Now there were 13000+ people in the arena and only a few dickheads throwing stuff. Why didnt he just ask the security team to catch the culprits instead of punishing the majority of the crowd , who were hurling nothing more physical than abuse , for a substandard performance ?

The organisers then sent out a sacrificail lamb who tried to pass off the issue as a “technical difficulty” and then followed this with the actual owner announcing that he was trying to persuade Axl to come back on stage ( by no doubt shoving a copy of the contract under his nose ! )

The lights were then turned on and the some of crowd turned nasty , I witnessed a number of “fans” near the front attacking the stadiums security staff and one of them being hauled out of the arena.

At this point , fully aware of Axl’s penchant for major strops and stubbornness , I decided to head for home. To be honest I had lost all interest in seeing him perform anything else anyway.

On the way home we heard that the band had resumed the show , but by all accounts Axl was just going through the motions , or rather not going through them by standing in the one spot !.

I’ll remain a fan of the music but not of the man , or the band currently claiming to be G’N'R.

Walshie

I really don’t know why people bother buying tickets. I saw GNR on the Illusion tour many years ago on a Sunday afternoon at Maine Road, it was the most disappointing performance I have ever witnessed. Axl spent most of the gig off stage changing his shorts… rubbish.

Ignore Them

I saw the Belfast gig and Axl got hit on the head with plastic beer glass. It was a brilliant throw and I was certain he would just walk off in a huff. He didn’t though and just ignored it and carried on singing. We had to leave the gig early (half eleven) because of a very early and responsible commitment the next morning. If they had come on when they were scheduled to we could have seen the whole thing. They were absolutely brilliant though and considerably better than Velvet Revolver in the same venue a few years ago. Maybe the most exciting gig I’ve seen since iggy in 1988. Not sure I would go again though, just in case Axl was in bad form.

Mississippi Sheik

I don’t quite understand the people who are saying that you should accept Axls´ lateness as part of the deal , no excuse , fuck ‘em !!

mike smith

Axl is the biggest cock jockey their is. GnR the biggest hype of shite on the planet.

Fearghal

I was also there. Here’s my take on the night.

I’ve never had the misfortune to be in the company of such an unpleasant group of people. Yes the band were late on stage by 50 minutes. Axl Rose has never been on time for a concert in his life and if you’re a Guns N’ Roses fan you already… know that. If you’re going to complain about Guns N’ Roses showing up late you might as well complain about Shane McGowan showing up drunk or Tom Waits sounding a little hoarse. You’re either willing to wait or you shouldn’t buy a ticket in the first place. He is an asshole, a complete diva, and an idiot. He is also one of my favourite singers/musicians. I had no problem waiting around. Then the minute they came out the crowd booed the fuck out of them. It started off with a few people, then the whole O2 Arena followed like the fucking sheep that they were. About 30 seconds into the second song people were throwing bottles at the stage. Plastic bottles it must be said, but they were throwing them nonetheless. Axl Rose addressed the crowd saying that they came here to have a good time and if we wanted them to stay, to stop throwing stuff at the stage. Cue the inevitable bottle being thrown about 20 minutes later and that was it, they walked off the stage.

All throughout the short time they WERE on stage the crowd were booing, heckling, spitting abuse and generally behaving like a bunch of football hooligans. It took me back to the couple of times I was in Hill 16 for a Dublin match where people were clearly attending just so they could listen to the sound of their own voices obnoxiously berating the players. What I didn’t understand though was that it was €70+ for a ticket to the show. Who pays €70 so they can fucking boo and throw bottles for a couple of hours? People there were obviously big enough fans to shell out the money to go yet they were behaving like a bunch of neanderthal savages spitting vitriol and bile when given half the chance. Then they started a “we want Slash” chant. The man hasn’t been in the band for fifteen years, you knew that when you were buying the ticket you sweaty, horrible fuck, so stop shouting down my fucking ear canal or I’ll actually punch you in the face. I turned around to one of the cunts and said “if you want to see Slash you should have gone to his gig in Vicar Street two months ago you fucking idiot!” That shut the prick up pretty fast. Anyway, the point is, people were just there to boo and act like assholes. It’s Axl fucking Rose for God’s sake, I’d say the odds were 100:1 on for him to be late so don’t bitch about it when it happens.

The wave of negativity and cynicism sweeping over live concerts in general in Ireland is disturbing. From the loudmouth prick standing behind me at Morrissey, to the two fucking dickheads who I had to verbally apprehend at Iron Maiden, to the hecklers at Derren Brown a couple of years ago, I think a lot of people seem to just attend concerts so they can act like a complete wanker for 2 hours. Or then you get the other gobshites who just stand there with a blasé attitude, arms folded trying their best to remain aloof and making sarky remarks between songs. I go to a concert to see a band I love perform live. Anyone who goes for any other reason is a complete tool. I give credit to the band for actually coming back out and staying til 1AM to finish the gig. I don’t know how likely I’d be to do that if people were throwing rubbish at me. If you’re angry with the band being late what does throwing a bottle solve? Nothing. What does booing at the top of your voice at every opportunity solve? Absolutely nothing. It just gives you a sore throat and creates a tense and unpleasant atmosphere in the arena. The people there were fucking idiots. I hope they got what they wanted.

While not defending Axl’s actions, I can sympathise with him. It seems his gigs are now full of idiots eagerly waiting for the slightest excuse to start trouble. He warned them not to throw anymore stuff and that if they did, he’d walk. He held true to that threat. Axl cannot be blamed for that, in my opinion. The fault lies with the numpties who continued to throw bottles and cans.

Anybody who says he should “suck it up”, the next time you’re late for work (for whatever reason), think about how much you’d like a bunch of dickheads throwing stuff at you for being late.

Mike McGreal

Check out Myles Kennedy singing G N’ R songs on you tube- who needs a bloated asshole like Axl- the future’s bright the future’s Kennedy!

MIssissippi Sheik

My my Fergal , you do seem to be a bit off a hard man I´m glad I don’t stand beside you at concerts because I’d propably stuff you fat mouth up fuckin’ arse !
Let’s put the record straight Fergal , Ireland begin a small country with few big cities and , until recently venues , has the tendency to put the big shows on in either Dublin or Belfast . Now if your a kid from Kilarney or Donegal there’s a lot of logistics envolved in getting to the show . Buses are usually organised and arrival and leaving times are set , if the gig is late starting you’re FUCKED !! Let’s say that maybe you know about Axls reputation but , you say a decade of the rosary that maybe this time he’ll be on time but , he’s not ! your bus is leaving , your heart is broken and ofcourse your FUCKED !!
Hope you enjoyed yourself !!

biglad74

I wasn’t at the gig in Dublin but I was at the Belfast show. Just to remind everybody that although Axl was a good 50 mins late we didn’t heckle or boo. Oh no we just rocked out. Out of the 4 gigs Axl has played over here (British Isles) Belfast was the least contraversal. Towards the end of the show somebody threw a rucksack ( yeah I dont get that either) at Axl and whilst expecting a full on strop from him he just picked it up and put it over his shoulder and sang on ( again I don’t get that). G’n'R or whatever you wish to call them put on a damn fine show in Belfast and the atmosphere was outta this world. Just wish other bands would play here. I’m sure you’d get a similar response from a really loud proud and enthusiastic crowd. Just thought I’d mention that.

so lets get this right it`s ok to throw bottles at people on stage (dont think so)and if anybody took the time it wasn`t a half empty arena oh and Axl`s been late for years so where`s the story in that what would be great is if the facts were accurate but then that doesn`t make a hyped up story Belfast was a great show by the way but that doesn`t make a story oh and slash hasn`t been in the band for over 10 years get over it.

Elliott

Come on its the irish and axl rose, practially 14,000 arse holes stuffed into one room, no wonder that happened.

axlroseacefrehley

Stop b i t c h i n everyone knows there is a 50/50 chance Axl wont show up! True fans know that and accept it!
number 1 rule at a gnr show is DONT THROW THINGS!!
people know that pisses Axl off he will LEAVE so dont do it!
Many claim that the new gnr is
“Axl N Friends” and that you hate axl than why do you go to shows and buy their albums than complain about how horrible axl is! `
Its axl rose!
get over it!

L♥ve Y♥u Axl!!

axlroseacefrehley

Jacky Said It Perfectly!
Finally Someone that understands!!!

donegalannie

Bualadh Bos to you Fearghal, i have to agree with you,

Mississippi Sheik i’m from Donegal & i’ve learned over the years never to go on an organized bus to a gig it’s a load of shite, drive yourself or take the damn public bus & stay over

& Elliott you sound like a complete fuckin arsehole, what do you mean it’s the Irish & Axlm, i seem to remember reading last monday about a certain English crowd booing him at Reading & chanting ‘you’re not Slash’ at that gig.

Mississippi Sheik

Ah donegalannie , hell has no fury like a womans tougue ! If I was 10 years younger and good lookin’ I´d probably ask you to marry me !!
I totally agree with you about the organized buses , usually organized by the same arse bandits who promote the shows . But , there are some young kids who unfortunately don’t have the choice that someone like yourself or myself might have , it’s a pity for them .
As for Elliott , couldn’t have put it better myself ! By the way , would you consider marriage ?

Jed Olliot

I agree with Fearghal. For some reason there are people who go to gigs and behave like pricks. Why do people go if they want talk all the way thru or get pissed and think we all enjoy their fun-filled antics.

donegalannie

well Mississippi Sheik

much and all as i’d like to be married to a wealthy oil baron, i’m glad to say that i am married & expecting my 1st child but thanks for the offer,

Guns N roses in Belfast will be my last gig for quite a while,

& no don’t blame my hormones for my rant, i’ve ranted like that all my life, my poor husband knows ha!!!

i can’t blame the people for being mad that GNR was an hour late, throwing bottles is not cool. the most i have ever had to wait is maybe 30 minutes for a band…………..don’t understand why GNR pulls this when they still have great fans who want to see them………..

Steve Emmerson

Axl is an idiot but people who attend concerts these days seem to be just a bunch of c*nts who are bored with their own life.

i was there and i know that a lot of people disagree with me but i loved the concert. admittedly it had its flaws such as a late start and people throwing stuff but at the end of show i was a very happy camper. they played for 2hrs and they played very well. Axl didn’t move fuck all once he got back on stage and he didn’t address the audience much either but he gave a great vocal performance. overall a good gig that could have been great. i saw them in 2006 in Dublin, i think i’m one a select group that can claim to have seen Guns n roses when they were actually scheduled to play…on stage at 9pm. i’m giving them another chance..and i couldn’t really give a toss if others don’t.
