Gig Of The Week: We Are The Fallen
BAND: We Are The Fallen
VENUE: London Kings College
DATE: Tuesday, March 23
We Are The Fallen is comprised of the original members of Evanescence, guitarists Ben Moody and John LeCompt along with drummer Rocky Gray, joined by American Idol finalist Carly Smithson on vocals.
For Smithson, We Are The Fallen completes her dream – after exiting American Idol – of becoming a creative force in a ‘vital’ band environment.
Don’t be put off by Smithson’s American Idol association. Her appearances were the highlights of Season Seven of the show (she was a sixth-place finisher) and were much rockier than you might imagine. Moody describes Smithson as a ‘true partner’ and a key component to We Are The Fallen’s sound.
Moody left Evanesence in 2003 and has since co-written major hits for Chris Daughtry and Kelly Clarkson, among others. Evanescence’s 2003 album, Fallen, spent 43 weeks on the Billboard Top 10 Albums Chart, selling 15 million copies worldwide.
Moody doesn’t see We Are The Fallen as competitors to Evanescence – particularly as Amy Lee is plotting another shift in direction for her band.
“We wish them the best,” Moody told Billboard.com. “There’s not really an Evanescence now, it’s Amy Lee playing as Evanescence with a bunch of other guys hired to play our parts. And she’s amazing – an incredible front person, a great songwriter, an incredible singer.
“There’s no reason we can’t both exist in the world. Musically, we’re going in completely different directions; The Open Door (Evanescence’s 2006 album) sounds nothing like We Are The Fallen.”
We Are The Fallen’s debut album Tear The World Down is set for a May 10 release. The band embark on a US tour in Philadelphia on March 26 as support to H.I.M. but will return to the UK for the summer festival season.
