Gig Of The Week: Trans-Siberian Orchestra
WHO: Trans-Siberian Orchestra
WHERE: London Hammersmith Apollo
WHEN: Monday, March 28
It’s been 18 years since TSO 9as they’re sometimes known) were formed in New York by composer and producer Paul O’Neill. Since then they’ve become a phenomenon in America, where they play to huge crowds everywhere they go, and their five studio albums to date have all sold over a million copies.
“People keep telling me that we’re in a recession,” says O’Neill, but we appear to be one of the few acts around who are able to defy the trend. We sell so many tickets that it’s almost frightening.”
What Trans-Siberian Orchestra do is combine metal, classical music, progressive rock and theatricality in a manner that attracts fans from all different spheres.
“People know that when they come to see us they get a huge show. We put so much money into making this as spectacular as possible. There are about 80 musicians and vocalists involved with this project. Of course, not everyone is there all the time, but having such a huge entourage allows us to do so many things.”
Among those whom you can expect to see is former Megadeth guitarist Pitrelli, who is one of the stalwarts of the TSO.
“We really should have come over to the UK and Europe earlier,” says Pitrelli. “But we’ve had commitments in America that have prevented us being able to come over until now. Now we intend to use the London date to establish what we can do, and hopefully return before long.”
