Gig Of The Week: Supertramp
WHERE: London O2 Arena
WHEN: Wednesday, October 6
In celebration of their 40th anniversary, and the reissue of the classic Breakfast In America album (released as a double CD on October 4), Supertramp are to play this one-off show in London, where they will create a special live show that will give fans a total Supertramp experience.
Says co-founder Rick Davies: “”what we intend to deliver is the full gamut of Supertramp history. A lot of the most popular songs along with the production that we’re used to. We have to kind of start from scratch from the production but I think we’ve got it all down, we’ve got the lights, we’ve got the movies. You know, a real sort of show is what we’re trying to deliver and really to please the fans and please ourselves”.
The set will be over two hours long, and will include many of their finest moments. Apparently they are doing songs written or co-written by founder member Roger Hodgson, even though the latter requested that, in his absence (he quit in 1983), the band don’t perform any of these classics. In fact, Hodgson insists he had agreement to this effect with Supertramp. But Davies has his own views:
“Well, I mean how far back are we going, 1983? All I know is that there was about 600 pages of documents and agreements to negotiate this thing. As far as I’m concerned, we’re playing Supertramp music. I mean, anything that was made at that time is Supertramp music to me.”
Joining lead vocalist and keyboardist Davies, are John Anthony Helliwell (saxophone), Bob Siebenberg (drums), Jesse Siebenberg (drums), Cliff Hugo (bass), Carl Verheyen (guitar), Lee Thornburg (trumpet/tuba/vocals) and Cassie Miller (vocals).
