Gig Of The Week: Stampede
WHERE: Kingston Peel
WHEN: Saturday, May 14They’re back and burning. NWOBHM heroes Stampede reunited in 2009, a quarter-of-a-century after they split up. Back in the early 1980s many believed this lot had what it took to become a major name on the global scene. Sadly that never happened. But the just released album A Sudden Impulse (on Rock Candy/Grind That Axe) proves the potency and potential are still there. In fact, this is certainly one of the year’s most stylish melodic hard rock records – a real thrust forward.
Now the band – vocalist Reuben Archer, guitarists Laurence Archer, Rob Wolverson and Chris Clowsley, bassist Colin Bond and drummer Stevie G – are ready to give us some action at The Peel.
“We’re gonna do a lot from the new album,” says Reuben Archer. “In fact, for most shows we’ll be doing the whole thing, but won’t be the time to do that at this gig.”
There will also be some old faves in the set as well, from 1983’s debut album Hurricane Town. In fact, the title track could well be the set opener.
“We’re playing with Praying Mantis at this gig, so we’ll probably end up doing just over an hour. It’s gonna be a fun night, though.”
