Gig Of The Week: Saint Jude
BAND: Saint Jude
WHERE: The Scala, London
WHEN: Friday, August 20
Saint Jude are back on home territory. One of the most talked about, and hotly tipped, bands of the moment, they get the chance to prove once again that their brand of rock ‘n’ roll really is gonna take them a long way. It’s been said before, but is worth repeating, if you love the idea of The Faces fronted by Jenny Hahn, then this is the band for you. As well as for Ronnie Wood, who’s a massive fan.
“We love playing London,” says striking vocalist Lynne Jackaman. “It is our hometown after all! I guess it does add more pressure when it’s in ya own yard, but that’s part of the enjoyment and challenge. It’s also a good reference point to see how far you’ve come as a band.”
The five-piece – also featuring guitarist Adam Greene, keyboard player Joe Glossop, bassist Colin Palmer and drummer Lee Cook – have plans for a second album, the follow-up to Diary Of Soul Fiend (one of the best releases over the past couple of years), and they might introduce a new song or two into the set.
“Well, we’re about to embark upon a heavy writing session, which will involve us all nesting in somewhere for a couple of weeks and playing, playing, playing!” laughs Jackaman. ”We would like to crack on with our second album and release it next summer. Ideally we’d like to release an album each year.
“In the meantime we will, of course, be touring and promoting our debut. So for this next gig we will mainly be concentrating on the album tracks. But there may be a couple of sneaky new ones in there somewhere.”
The band feel that that they’re moving forward and building a career, by trusting to the traditional approach.
“Playing our six-month residency at The 100 Club recently really helped us to hone our craft and stage act, and widen our audience. Every gig we do we attract more fans and public attention. We are doing it the old school way of just playing and playing and building it. Bring it on!”
Also on the bill are Casino, Tracie Hunter Band, Horesman Shakes & The Draymen, plus DJ Maz Star.
