Gig Of The Week: Roger Hodgson
WHO: Roger Hodgson
WHERE: Gateshead Sage
WHEN: Friday, May 27
The one-time Supertramp is once again out on the road, showcasing his large catalogue of classic songs. You know a lot of them already, and while Supertramp still perform some of these great tracks, there’s nothing like hearing them with the original singer.
Hodgson himself sees this tour as a way of reinforcing his own heritage.
“To say that I’m taking back my heritage is a little strong, but it’s not far from the truth. I am disappointed that Supertramp play my songs. I thought I had a gentleman’s agreement with them that they wouldn’t do this.”
Hodgson plays guitar and keyboards as well as singing. He’s joined by keyboard player Kevin Adamson, keyboard player/saxophonist Aaron Macdonald, bassist Ian Stewart and drummer Bryan Head. His set will not only feature Supertramp masterpieces like Breakfast In America, It’s Raining Again and The Logical Song but also material from a lengthy solo career.
“I vary the set every night, depending on what sort of venue I’m playing in. Some songs I know work better when I’m doing my acoustic tour, while others are more suited to being played with a band. To me, the most important think is the connection with the audience, and there are some tracks I know they expect to hear.”
Apart from Gateshead, the other shows on this May tour are:
Wed. 25: London Royal Albert Hall
Sat. 28: Glasgow Pavilion
Sun. 29: Liverpool Philharmonic
