Gig Of The Week: Overkill
WHERE: Wolverhampton Wulfrun Hall
WHEN: Wednesday, February 24
The veteran New Yorkers are back – and ready to burst every organ in pursuit of the ultimate metal thrashing mad experience.
“It’s a great time for us,” says frontman Bobby ‘Blitz’ Ellsworth. “Right now, the sort of music we’ve always made is getting a lot of attention. That’s no bad things for us – it means that we can still avoid having to get a job as manual labourers for a little longer!”
Overkill have just released Ironbound, the 15th studio album of a career that started in 1980. Ellsworth is proud of the record, and it’s certainly being showcased on this tour.
“Right now, we have about three songs from it in our set, plus a few more obscure tracks from our past and then we have the classic killers. The aim is show that we belong in the present, and this is not a nostalgia trip at all.
“The set is pretty much the same every night. But once we can do it almost without having to think, then we’ll begin to play around with it.”
Ellsworth and the rest of the band – guitarists Dave Linsk and Derek Tailer, bassist D. D. Verni and drummer Ron Lipnicki – are only doing two shows in the UK this time, the other being in London at the Islington O2 Academy on February 25. This isn’t Overkill’s choice.
“We’d love to do more, but the promoter puts us in venues where he feels we can do well, so it’s just these two for now. In our entire career we’ve done about 3300 shows, and of these about 0.1 percent have been in Britain.
“Doing Wolverhampton is cool. It’s the midlands, right? Where metal started with Sabbath and Priest. I’m a huge fan of these bands, and to play close to where they began…that’s great.”
Supporting Overkill on these UK dates, and across Europe, are young Londoners Savage Messiah, who have impressed Ellsworth
“They’re classic style thrash band. Like us, only a lot younger. Bands like this prove that thrash is as strong as ever, and have given all of us older ones a real shot in the arm.
Ellsworth is promising Overkill are to return here in the Summer.
“There will definitely be a second run, it has to happen. Right now, we’re booked up to November on the road. I don’t think we’ve ever been busier!”
