Gig Of The Week: Orange Goblin
WHO: Orange Goblin
WHERE: London Islington O2 Academy
WHEN: Sunday, December 19
Celebrating their 15th anniversary, Orange Goblin are about to play what’s become their annual Christmas show in London.
“We’re gonna do a slightly different set to our usual one,” says vocalist Ben Ward. “Because it is our 15th anniversary, we’ll do songs that span our career. It’s been fun pulling out tracks we haven’t done for ages, and trying to remember how they go. I’ve been having a laugh at Joe (Hoare, guitar), as he tries to work out those riffs.”
As anyone who’s seen one of the past Goblin Xmas gigs will know, you’re never sure what’ll happen next, and it appears the same is true this time.
“We’ll get Harry Armstrong (from End Of Level Boss) up for Turbo Effalunt (from 2000’s The Big Black album), as he’s on the recorded version. And you never know with us what else might happen! It’ll be the usual drunken heavy metal atmosphere.”
Joining Orange Goblin (also featuring bassist Martyn Millard and drummer Chris Turner) are Solace (“They’re excellent”), Firebird (“Always amazing”) and Obiat (“Another fine band”),
As for the band’s plans for next year, this does include writing and recording their first studio album since 2007’s Healing Through Fire.
“We’ve got bits and pieces worked out, but we’re gonna have to give it a lot of thought. Before that we’re going to America for our first tour over there in five years. And we’re playing on the West for the first time since 2004. Once the album comes out (on Candlelight) we’ll be back in the touring cycle.”
