Gig Of The Week: Monster Magnet
WHO: Monster Magnet
WHERE: Glasgow Garage
WHEN: Thursday, November 24
Dave Wyndorf and his space rock pilots return to these shores for a special tour. What’s so special? Well, they’ll be playing the whole of their classic 1995 album Dopes To Infinity. Wyndorf explains the reason for this:
“Dopes… was the record that broke us in Europe, so I thought it would be a good place to start. Plus the songs present a more melodic side of Monster Magnet than we’ve been playing live lately, which is a nice change of pace.”
Wyndorf (guitar/vocals) and the band’s current line-up – also featuring lead guitarist Garrett Sweeny, rhythm guitarist Phil Caivano, bassist Jim Baglino and drummer Bob Pantello – might well take the idea an entire album in the live set onwards to other parts of their catalogue.
“I love the whole concept of performing albums in their entirety. It presents a unique challenge to us, in terms of creating a vibe that makes for the best show, possible given the limited choice of songs available as dictated by the contents of the album. Man, that was a looong sentence!”
As for the rest of the set…expect the unexpected!
“All bets are off when it comes to the encore.”
The other UK date during this ongoing European tour trek is at Koko in London, which is on Friday, November 25.
