Gig Of The Week: Lacuna Coil
BAND: Lacuna Coil
WHERE: Manchester Academy II
WHEN: Sunday, January 31
This is the Italians’ first full UK/Ireland tour for a while. And, says vocalist Andrea Ferro, the sextet are out to do something a little different.
“We’ve been developing videos and back projects to use throughout the show. We did this a little last Summer in America, and it went well. So, now we’ve taken it even further. It won’t just be a collection of random images with no connections to the songs, Each one will have a meaning, and tie in with the lyrics.
“We just felt it was time to freshen up what we do. These won’t be used constantly, but at specific points, which will add to the impact.”
The band – Ferro, vocalist Cristina Scabbia, guitarists Cristiano Migliore and Marco ‘Mauz’ Biazzi, bassist Marco Coti Zelati and drummer Cristiano ‘CriZ’ Mozzati – will also be changing their set every night. No mean task.
“Basically, we’ll only be doing songs from the last four albums – Shallow Life (2009), Karmacode (’06), Comalies (’02), Unleashed Memories (’01) – and there will be three or four songs rotated each night. So, you’ll hear something in Manchester that won’t be done elsewhere. Right now, I’m not too sure how we’ll make the choice each night. Perhaps we’ll each take it in turns.”
The support acts on the tour are Dirty Little Rabbits and Dommin, two interesting choices.
“Dirty Little Rabbits is Clown from Slipknot’s band. I’m not totally familiar with their music, but the cool thing is that they’re very different to us. It would be daft to have clones of Lacuna Coil supporting. Very boring for everyone.
“Dommin supported us on a few shows in America last year. They’re from Los Angeles and we really liked them. They look very rockabilly, but the music is definitely goth. It’s kinad like Type O Negative meets Danzig, only with more keyboards. We offered them the tour and, as it coincides with the release of their album (Love Is Gone – out on February 15), it made sense for them to do it.”
Ferro believes that Lacuna Coil are in the happy position of attracting younger fans, while holding onto the older ones. Nice trick if you can pull it off.
“We are getting older, and knowing that we’re attracting teenagers is a real boost. Not that we only want the 16-year-old girls to come to the show. That’s as bad as having just the old fans. But a good mix between those just getting into the band, and the ones who’ve been with us since we first started…that’s the aim. And we appear to have it.”
Apart from Machester, Lacuna Coil also play:
Jan. 29: Dublin Academy (Dommin are not on the bill)
Feb. 1: Birmingham Academy
Feb. 2: Glasgow ABC
Feb 4: Bristol O2 Academy
Feb. 5: London O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire
