Gig Of The Week: Joe Bonamassa (And Win A Pair Of Tickets)
WHO: Joe Bonamassa
WHERE: Rotherham Magna Science Adventure Centre
WHEN: Saturday, May 29“I’ve been told Rotherham’s close to Sheffield,” says Joe Bonamassa. “And I always do well in that city, So I’m looking forward to play there. Apparently, this is not a venue used regularly for gigs, and only the Arctic Monkeys and Paul Weller have sold it out before. So there’s a challenge!”
Bonamassa and his band – bassist Carmine Rojas, keyboard player Rick Melick and drummer Bogie Bowles – actually kick off the UK tour on May 28, in London at the Hammersmith Apollo. There are also two further dates:
May 30: Bournemouth BIC
May 31: Birmingham NIA
“We had an eight-day break at the end of the recent American tour when we freshened up the set,” reveals the guitar hero. “Right now, we do a few tracks from the current album (Black Rock), but we have brought back some older material. A New Day Yesterday and If Heartaches Were Nickels (both from the 2000 album A New Day Yesterday) are back in the set. I think over the two hours and 10 minutes we play, this is a good cross-section.”
While some big names are struggling to sell tickets, that’s not a problem at all for Bonamassa.
“Things just keep on growing. On my last tour here I was doing venues with capacities between 1800-2500. Now, it’s up to 3-6000! The US tour I just finished was a real eye-opener. Most of the laces were sold out, which I’ve never had happen before. It appears the success I’ve enjoyed in places like the UK is finally coming through for me in America.”
Supporting on the tour is Scottish singer/songwriter Sandi Thom, who had a huge hit in 2006 with the single I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker (With Flowers In My Hair).
