Gig Of The Week: Hawkwind
WHERE: Newcastle O2 Academy
WHEN: Sunday, December 5
You know Christmas is coming, because Hawkwind are back on tour.
“Yeah, it’s become an annual event,” laughs guitarist/vocalist Dave Brock. “Mind you I wish we could tour a little earlier in the year. It’s so bloody cold in December. But the problem is that it’s tough to get a run of venues in, say, October, because so many are fully booked.”
The band – also featuring guitarist Niall Hone keyboard player Tim Blake, bassist Mr. Dibs and drummer Richard Chadwick – have somewhat revamped their set, partly taking into account suggestions from fans.
“People have been leaving song ideas on our forum, and we have included one or two of these. For instance we start off the set really fast with You Shouldn’t Do That (from 1971’s In Search Of Space album) and then into Lord Of Light (from 1972’s Doremi Fasol Latido). What we try and do is put together a set that flows. We have to get the pacing right and also make sure that the key changes work.
“We’re also gonna be doing quite a bit of material from the current album, Blood Of The Earth. So it’s a case of new stuff and the old as well.”
Support on the tour comes from The Jokers, with the Hot Steppers also being added for the London date.
