Gig Of The Week: Chickenfoot
WHEN: Saturday, January 14
WHERE: London Brixton O2 Academy
Drummer Kenny Aronoff is excited to be part of Chickenfoot.
“I know I’m only standing in for Chad Smith, but it feels like I am part of the band, not just hired for a session. In fact, Sammy (Hagar, vocals) was really insistent that this is how it should. Because if we aren’t gelling together, then what is the point of doing it?”
Aronoff has taken over from Smith, because the latter has Chili Peppers commitments. But the pair are old friends.
“Chad actually recommended me for the job. We have a similar way of playing, which helps a lot. But Sammy, Joe (Satriani, guitar) and Michael (Anthony, bass) are incredible to play with. They’ve so much experience and it’s incredible fun. I can honestly say that I don’t think I have ever been involved with any band that’s been so happy. For me, it’s like being in the Beatles. In fact, it seems like there are now five members of Chickenfoot. Both Chad and I are with this band!”
Still, a member of John Fogerty’s band, Aronoff has only done a handful of shows with Chickenfoot, but is glowing with his praise.
“It’s been phenomenal, and I can’t wait for everyone to see us in Manchester and London. The thing is every night is different. The set might have the same songs, but there are always variations, which make it very exciting. It’s rather like Led Zeppelin used to be. I think the fans are in for a great time.”
Supported by Red, White & Blues (who are also on the London date), Chickenfoot also play the Academy in Manchester on Thursday, January 12. But this is already sold out.
