Gig Of The Week: Black Stone Cherry/Rival Sons
WHO: Black Stone Cherry/Rival Sons
WHERE: Manchester Academy
WHEN: Sunday, March 18
The hottest tour of the moment has brought together two American bands whose differing musical styles are still united by a deference to 70s rock. In the case of Black Stone Cherry, it’s southern rock. In the case of Rival Sons, it’s more about Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin.
“The whole European tour’s been amazing,” says Black Stone Cherry drummer John Fred Young. “And since we’ve been in the UK, every venue’s been packed.”
BST – who also feature vocalist/guitarist Chris Robertson, guitarist Ben Wells and bassist Jon Lawhon – are playing a set of about 90 minutes every night.
“We started off varying what we played, to get the right mix, which we now feel we’ve got. So the set is now running very smoothly.”
Rival Sons are playing somewhere between 30 and 45 minutes each night.
“We aren’t playing any new songs right now,” reveals bassist Robin Everhart. “But we are changing things around, if not every night then on a regular basis. It keeps it fresh for us.”
The challenge for Everhart, frontman Jay Buchanan, guitarist Scott Holiday and drummer Mike Miley is to win over new fans.
“That’s why we’re doing this. We wanted to stretch ourselves. There are Rival Sons fans in the crowd every night, but a lot of the people have never heard us before.”
For both bands, much of the rest of the year will be spent on the road, although the Sons have already finished recording their next album, which is to be released later in 2012 by Earache.
After Manchester, the rest of the tour takes in:
Mon. 19: Newcastle Academy
Wed. 21: Edinburgh HMV Picture House
Thu. 22: Aberdeen Lemon Tree
Fri. 23: Inverness Ironworks
Sat. 24: Glasgow Academy
Mon. 26: Bristol O2 Academy
Tue. 27: Southampton Guildhall
Wed.. 28: London HMV Forum
Finally, what are the chances of the two bands jamming together on stage?
“It’s unlikely,” admits Young. “There would just be too much equipment involved and take too long to set up.” Shame!
